AIBU - Matcha is disgusting

Matcha tastes like rubbish and I do not understand why people pretend to like the taste of this green bile.

I have tried it cold with various types of "milk" and even real milk, added ice and flavoured and plain syrups.

Despite all the effort and promises of enjoyment, this "drink" makes me feel like I spent good money on off cuts of grass from the neighbours garden recycling.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

YABU - add eco friendly things (like crickets) or add alcohol and try again
YANBU - people drink grass because it's trendy and they like to waste money

Matcha tastes like weeds mixed with milk.

It does.

Even with leggings and Botox.

shuddacuddadidnt · 06/05/2026 07:25

Love, matcha. Had it whisked in Japan and brought back lots as I was in the matcha growing region. I now make matcha kakigori in summertime and wouldn't buy the bastard version in Starbucks.

Whatafustercluck · 06/05/2026 07:39

It does taste quite earthy and I can understand people not liking it. I have it with coconut milk, ice and a little syrup and love it like that. But that's pretty much the only way I like it. It does seem to help keep my energy levels for longer and reduces bloating.

Haribitch · 06/05/2026 07:39

YABU. I adore matcha plus it’s good for you. (Don’t have any Botox though, not into injecting chemicals.)

MyThreeWords · 06/05/2026 07:41

What I'm getting from this thread is that matcha is a bit marmite. This seems very apt, because they are both umami and both start with the same two letters.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/05/2026 07:47

I’ve tried it and can’t stand it either.

You have a point about Starbucks being crap, in many ways, true.

However, I have tried organic matcha powder, with and without dairy, and it was still revolting. Much like the seaweed powder trend.

Hard pass.

Same. Tried naice posh stuff and common stuff. Still vile. Nice cup of tea every time, decaf in pm or cappuccino.

louderthan · 06/05/2026 07:50

I really like it. I have it iced, without syrup and with oat milk. It does taste like seaweed but I like seaweed.

likelysuspect · 06/05/2026 07:50

Yes it tastes like bin.

It will go away soon.

Snoken · 06/05/2026 07:52

I like it warm with oat milk and a bit of honey. I have always liked the taste of green tea though but not really black tea.

I bought matcha covered chocolate almonds and they smelt of dead fish. This is the limit of my matcha experience.

Yes, weird fishy undertones. Yuck.

youalright · 06/05/2026 07:57

Why did you keep getting it surely you knew from your first sip if you liked it or not

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/05/2026 07:58

Try the ube one. That's not bad.

Livpool · 06/05/2026 07:59

It tastes like dirty grass - and it is on desserts 🤢

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/05/2026 08:00

I tried it once and hated it never to give it another thought, you seem determined to keep at it until it changes flavour or you start to like it, just move on.

CloudyBayPlease · 06/05/2026 08:01

It tastes like the smell of our compost heap.

youalright · 06/05/2026 08:04

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/05/2026 07:58

But why, just buy a drink you like. Starbucks/costa etc is expensive and a treat its supposed to be something you enjoy not just tolerate just because matcha is currently the in thing. Its odd to me anyone over 15 thinks like this.

Owly11 · 06/05/2026 08:06

It's absolutely disgusting 🤮

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 06/05/2026 08:07

It tastes fishy to me but I put it on my morning protein shake and can’t really taste it. It gives me such and energy boost though that I’d happily take a teaspoon of powder dry if it was really necessary! I refuse to pay Starbucks prices for any kind of drink though.

toastofthetown · 06/05/2026 08:08

HoppingPavlova · 06/05/2026 07:07

What? I don’t get the not understanding. Different people like different things, surely this is not a surprise. I can’t stand it myself but then, I like coriander and I know many don’t, which is okay as we are all different.

A lot of people on Mumsnet seem to have skipped the primary school lesson that not everyone likes the same thing and that’s ok.

Didimum · 06/05/2026 08:13

I really enjoy matcha. Have drunk it since I was 17. Everyone’s different. Who cares?

Didimum · 06/05/2026 08:14

MaryBeardsShoes · 06/05/2026 06:55

“I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.”

eh?

She’s trying to make fun of the people she believes ‘pretend’ to like matcha.

PennyThought · 06/05/2026 08:15

youalright · 06/05/2026 07:57

Why did you keep getting it surely you knew from your first sip if you liked it or not

I tried different versions of it because everyone has an opinion on how to make it "better".

Surely you read that part?

Wrong. Reference to different thread re: leggings, botox and matcha mums.
