AIBU - Matcha is disgusting

PennyThought · 06/05/2026 06:50

Matcha tastes like rubbish and I do not understand why people pretend to like the taste of this green bile.

I have tried it cold with various types of "milk" and even real milk, added ice and flavoured and plain syrups.

Despite all the effort and promises of enjoyment, this "drink" makes me feel like I spent good money on off cuts of grass from the neighbours garden recycling.

Currently, Starbucks offers this amazing blend for £7.50, for a grande, because it's full of "protein" 🤔

I have also tried to wear leggings and update my Botox, but the disgusting taste remains.

YABU - add eco friendly things (like crickets) or add alcohol and try again
YANBU - people drink grass because it's trendy and they like to waste money

I tried it once and hated it never to give it another thought, you seem determined to keep at it until it changes flavour or you start to like it, just move on.

Phew. Glad you're here to set me right! Thanks!

I tried different versions of it because everyone has an opinion on how to make it "better".

Surely you read that part?

But you don't like it and thats ok you don't need to try 10 different ways to make it bearable just order something you do like

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/05/2026 08:22

You don't have to like it - not everyone does.
However, the people I've met who dislike it have only tried it scalded with boiling water. You're meant to use 80° water.

SourdoughSally · 06/05/2026 08:23

Pretty much anything that some of these American coffee chains puts out is going to be absolute shite.

Weak coffee with syrup, sugar, artificial flavourings etc is not coffee.

Ditto bandwagon-jumping for the latest "trend". Any health benefits of matcha (or probably just green food colouring) will be heavily outweighed by the chemicals and calories in the rest of the drink.

Takoneko · 06/05/2026 08:26

I like matcha.

I quite like it as it is without any milk or anything else added, with a small wagashi of some sort on the side.

I am also a complete sucker for any kind of matcha flavoured sweet or dessert. Katsute100 do an amazing matcha mille crepe. It’s not something I’d eat late in the day though because that’s a lot of caffeine.

Different people like different things. I find the whole hot honey on everything trend isn’t really to my taste. Clearly lots of people do enjoy it though because it’s on every menu.

I wonder it matcha will turn out to be like coriander where people have completely experiences when tasting it. To me it’s a bit grassy but it doesn’t prompt anything like a sense of disgust when I drink it. Diluted in milk it’s barely even there as a flavour.

I wondered this too. I think it’s delicious both by itself and with syrups. When people say it’s revolting and tastes like grass I wonder if we’re drinking the same thing.

See, take note all of you who said: Why do you keep trying it. Just order what you like...as if this is some genius advice never considered, heretofore.

@SuperLoudPoppingAction has suggested yes another alternative way to try it and I will take this on board! I have only ever had it cold. I have doubts that I will like it, though, but I will try if someone offers it to me.

I won't be going out of my way to purchase it, again, though......

Thanks @SuperLoudPoppingAction !

I like it when it's made in little roadside stalls in Asia. Completely different taste to the starbucks version.

Girlwithavibe · 06/05/2026 08:29

Tastes like muddy grass to me and I've tried a few varieties yuk 🤢
I think it's a marmite thing u either love it or hate it or your drinking it to look cool 😂

hahabahbag · 06/05/2026 08:30

I like proper matcha, hot, no milk, tiny cups as served in Japan. These weird concoctions here just taste odd

Wjdbxb · 06/05/2026 08:30

MyThreeWords · 06/05/2026 07:04

Tights, surely? I just can't picture her in socks.

Also, I'm pretty sure her tights/socks would taste like some sort of lavender talcum powder rather than sweat - probably closer to a herbal tea than proper tea.

Why is this so true though? (Well, in my head). She ABSOLUTELY added a liberal sprinkle of Yardley lavender talc to her bod and her shoes every day. How I know this, I don’t know. Some sort of psychic powers probs. You are clearly tuned into the same wavelength/

Wjdbxb · 06/05/2026 08:31

Margaret Thatcher tights flavour discussion aside, I didn’t mind matcha the one time I tried it - grassy but ok. But it upset my tummy.

Hostile17Lover · 06/05/2026 08:33

I like it plain but peaches and cream matcha from Bird and Blend is a game changer.

Nice. I did not know this existed!

I went to Japan a couple years ago. We had a tea ceremony with a Geisha in Kyoto. Now that matcha was amazing! She taught us how to make it properly, and we bought a little pouch of it, with the correct utensils, to make it ourselves at home. Sadly, that pouch has now all gone.
I've tried it a couple times in the UK, and the stuff made in a lot of places here is not to my taste. However, there is a small Japanese tea room about 20 minutes away from me (where we have not visited yet); I might try it there one day.

BunnyLake · 06/05/2026 08:34

Some people are taking the dislike of Matcha very personally 😂 I don’t think I’ve tried it but am intrigued now.

Haffway · 06/05/2026 08:34

The gods on Olympus get bored and try to see how far they can push it with us humans

skinny jeans
Poison injections
knickers that sit up your crack
hot grass on a glass

Third option : YABVU because obviously different people like different things.

Not sure when matcha became trendy but I know I was drinking and loving green tea flavoured stuff as far back as 2015 when I lived in Korea. And I think they taste similar so not surprisingly I like matcha too

I loved all things green tea and matcha back then in Korea - ice cream, cold lattes and even had this Korean hot dish flavoured with it. So it’s something I continued with when I came back home.

There was absolutely no reason for me to pretend I liked it if I didn’t. I’m not an influencer and I don’t think it was “trendy ” then.

hahabahbag · 06/05/2026 08:36

That said with the exception of Indian chai I do not put milk in my tea (Indian chai as opposed to the sickly sweet milky drinks served with that name in the U.K. is delicious, again tiny cups not big containers, based place was a little stall outside the carpet place in jaipur, delicious)

It’s easy money for them if they are making bets. Us humans love a trend no matter how absurd.😂 (No comment on Matcha as I haven’t had it, but if the Japanese approve then I’ll keep an open mind to try it).

Is Matcha the green stuff because I think I may have had Matcha ice cream once.

Matchstixxx · 06/05/2026 08:39

oh and to add I have tried matcha lattes in a couple of coffee shops here and didn’t like it. I make my own at home with oat milk and matcha powder I order online. I love it cold, and sometimes add a teaspoon of honey.
I am not super keen on having it hot, I find it just okay. Have also baked matcha flavoured cake and it came out well.

Wrong. Reference to different thread re: leggings, botox and matcha mums.

Well no – you are referencing the ‘type’ of person you think likes matcha (or pretends to by your description), and are using those attributes to make a parody. You are making fun of that ‘type’.

Doesn’t really make a difference whether you think you are or not. It’s a joke that didn’t land well – move on.

I’m getting the impression Matcha drinkers are quite serious people.

How about you take your own advice and move on. Get a sense of humour and you are welcome back. 😘

But you don't like it and thats ok you don't need to try 10 different ways to make it bearable just order something you do like

Exactly 😂 good point. Honestly it sums up a lot of society. They’re so desperate to jump on bandwagons and are annoyed when they don’t like what “everyone else likes” out of fear they’re being left out.

I grew up in west coast Scotland. Lots of HEAVY drinkers around me. I had my first few tastes of alcohol as a teen (cider, vodka, red wine) and said no thanks after people urged me to try it like this and try it like that.

I was like I just don’t like it so no I won’t keep trying variations of it 😂

Everyone said I’d changed my mind, two decades later I still don’t drink bar the occasional glass of Prosecco which I like the taste of!

And oh I don’t go around questioning why everyone else likes alcohol as vile as I find most of it.
