For asking my partner not to sleep naked

Em111110 · 04/05/2026 23:21

For some reason, my partner of 13 years has recently started sleeping naked. By recent, I mean the last few weeks. He says it is freeing and he sleeps better naked. There are occasions where we have fallen asleep naked in the past but we mostly wear pjs or at least underwear. The main reason is we have an 11 year old daughter, but I am also a bit of a clean freak and he is a typical sweaty farty man and it it gives me the ick sleeping naked in our sheets. My partner also doesn’t sleep well and gets up numerous times through the night, leaving the room to go for a drink, bathroom etc naked or kicks the sheets off so everything is on show. He says I am controlling for asking him to wear at least underwear to bed but I don’t think it’s appropriate for him to be naked when we have a nearly teenage daughter. AIBU?

Where do you have sex?

And do scrub things down after?

I don't 😂

I don't think my husband has slept in anything she has was about 15! God help him if he ever had to go into hospital!

When the kids were small if they came in they came in, we never hid our bodies. if he went to the loo then he might put a pair of shorts on as they got older.

I had to rush out and buy dh pyjamas when he got admitted to hospital!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 06/05/2026 19:30

Seems odd your partner wants to sleep naked after 13 years. Has he suddenly. developed night sweats during his male menopause.

Or perhaps he is trying to cling on to image of his younger male virile body.

Don't know which country you live in.
But let's see if he's still swaning around stark bollock naked on freezing cold winter UK nights

As for your daughter he should not be walking around naked in front of her. Bang out or order

If he continues. I would just get my own bed.
Endof.

ExperiencedTeacher · 06/05/2026 19:37

DP and I both sleep naked. Kids are 11 and 14. They don’t come into our room without knocking and DP (who is not their dad) would never leave our bedroom naked/we’d never open the bedroom door while he was uncovered.

JJMama · 06/05/2026 19:40

How odd…! I can’t stand clothes on at night, and don’t see that I should have to compromise that! Let your partner sleep naked - it’s a weird thing to control…!

I do have two teen sons and thus wouldn’t walk around naked in the house. So you ANBU about him covering up around the house with an 11 year old girl.

I wash my bedding once a week and shower daily. It’s not difficult!!

Sadcafe · 06/05/2026 20:08

Good grief, I’ve slept naked for the last 40 odd years, through 4 kids, DW wears pjs but would never tell me to wear anything, don’t even wear things if we away, though would have a handy dressing gown in those circumstances

Cherrytree86 · 06/05/2026 20:25

No one actually wears pj’s in bed to sleep, do they?? They are supposed to just be garments that you wear when you come out the shower and are pottering around taking your make up off or whatever, and then in a morning while you clean your teeth and stuff.

if someone tried to dictate what I should wear…at any time in my life… day wear or night wear… I would literally divorce them

UnctuousUnicorns · 06/05/2026 20:30

Millions of people wear pyjamas, or nightgowns, nightshirts etc. in bed to sleep.

It’s not odd at all. I’ve realised recently that I quite like to sleep naked. I’ve never slept naked in the nearly 18 years I’ve been married to my husband. It’s perfectly ok to change your preferences. I’d be pretty pissed off if my husband told me I couldn’t sleep naked if I wanted to.

ETA it’s nothing to do with heat or night sweats. I just prefer the feeling of not wearing clothes. Nothing more sinister to it.

My Nan - born 1908 used to insist you should have some air round your nether regions - so I did have a nightie to put on but no underwear with it.

How times change - and how more Edwardian than the actual Edwardians we seem to be!

@MsJinks

your Nan was correct

As a nurse, we can always spot the blokes wearing pj's for the first time haha
At night they normally strip off hahaha

It’s absolutely fine. I haven’t worn clothes in bed for 20 years. It is being controlling to dictate what he does and doesn’t wear to bed

This can't be true - you would have died five times over from some hideous bedsheet-borne arsecrack-originated disease if some of the posts on here are to be believed.

Seriously though I agree with you, and I thank my lucky stars I don't have hang-ups like the hygiene obsessives do whenever I read this sort of thread.

Partickthistle · 06/05/2026 21:35

What kind of prude are you? This is your husband you're talking about! - Sleeping naked is the most natural thing in the world and probably healthier too, after having the body covered up throughout the day. Of course, when wandering outside the bedroom it would be advisable to wear a bathrobe or some clothing to cover up. It sounds like the idea of a king-size bed with split mattresses as an earlier poster suggested might be needed in your household.

Laura95167 · 06/05/2026 21:39

Nudity isnt dirty.

Its probably embarrassing for your daughter if she sees him nude, but thats all.

If he wants to sleep nude I think thats his choice

Given the issue as OP outlined it, I really don’t think so-called prudery is the problem here.

No grandparent or parent ever suggested any such thing to me. I've always worn pants to bed. I only ever got thrush during pregnancy. The rest of the time I'm just fine. And yes, I do wear fresh pants to bed, after a bath.

I sleep naked. So does my partner. My son has seen us both naked and do you know what happened? Absolutely nothing. Do I care that he’s seen me naked? No. Is he traumatised? No. You’re all weird!!!

This - I don’t get all the other replies at all!

Haha you sound appalled! She was a respectable married lady if that helps anything.

But I’ve never wore underwear in bed for preference- only when essential- maybe it stuck - maybe that’s how some sleepwear habits do stick.

Anyway, sorry to all those appalled by my Nan and my disgusting unhygienic habits around bedtime underwear - no I’m not drunk tonight either lol

My Nan and mum always said exactly the same.

So had a sleep tshirt as a kid. Normally naked in bed though. Only time I'm not idls if I'm in hospital

Greenknightsuccess · 06/05/2026 22:09

My husband and I sleep naked, we always have. We pop to the loo naked if we have to get up in the night too - literally never once bumped into our kids on the landing. You are overthinking things.

I'm not appalled! 🤣 I'm just giving my own experience - and remarking that being covered with cotton pants at night hasn't resulted in anything terrible happening to my "nether regions"! 🤷‍♀️ 😅

Exactly - how often are people encountering their children on the landing at 3am?

Haha - sorry I misread that - and I’ve no excuse being sober!
I’m totally onboard with folk wearing what they choose in bed - just baffled at some comments on here - though I’m enjoying it too lol.

If a man can’t be naked in his own damn house, where can he be?! You’re absolutely being unreasonable. None of your reasons are valid here. Would you like it if he told you not to wear what you’re comfortable in to bed?

Not even his own house, but the poor sod can't even be naked in his own bed!!

Its unhinged.
