Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Cremola. It was a cross between semolina and custard, and was delicious!

I've no idea how accurate this is:

I envy you.
I wrote a letter to the makers of Sindy doll with all sorts of suggestions about products and her lifestyle. It was 1978.
To be fair I got a lovely letter back and then a box came from Hamleys with all sorts of goodies. We didn’t have a lot and it was like Christmas.
When a few things did change, I convinced myself it was because of my letter. Of course if I’d married a prince I could have dined out on my fight for feminism. 🤣
I remember my mum let me use her Basildon Bond paper I think I used half the pad!
A dark Flake - sounds gorgeous. Did they do one once that also had white chocolate in it?

Yes, it was called Snowflake (how original) and was a white flake coated in milk chocolate.

Oh yes, a travesty. Along the same lines, Lindt/Lindor did a large bar of raspberry dark chocolate that was originally fondant, but have now changed it to crunchy raspberry bits that just get stuck in your teeth.

Lindt also did a pistachio bar, with squares filled with gree nfondant and a pistachio in each square. Like the raspberry, it's now just a bar with bits.

chickenandapples · 05/05/2026 17:58

Galaxy chocolate Easter eggs my beloved. I am nothing without you.

I remember those!

Dairy Milk before they changed the recipe.
Caramac
Flyte bars

Miss Cara Mac. Gold bar biscuits/Gold digestives have a similar taste. Obviously not as good as the bars

Harmonypus · 05/05/2026 18:01

Not exactly discontinued but priced beyond my reach, are Cafe Noir biscuits. Last time I saw them in Tesco they were about £1.20 per packet, today I've seen them on Amazon at £5.46😮
Over a fiver for a packet of biscuits??? I liked them very very much, but not £5.46 worth of like!

Coconut boosts

Snugglything · 05/05/2026 18:08

Cabana chocolate bars. They were discontinued in the 90’s and were a yummy mix of coconut, caramel and cherry.

I also used to love Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream back in the 90’s. It was vanilla malt ice cream, peanut fudge-covered pretzels, and both fudge and peanut butter swirls. I just checked and you can still get it in the US but not the UK. Sad times.

I loved the bit in dinnerladies where Dolly was talking at cross purposes with everyone about Delia Smith, Delius, Chopin and Les Sylphides and very indignantly said 'Delia Smith does NOT have syphilis, a woman with such immaculate teatowels couldn't possibly!' God, there was nobody to match VW.

"And anyway, even if she did have some sort of sexually transmitted dilemma, she's not going to be having it on channel 5" 😁

You're making me want to watch them all again already!

DilemmaDelilah · 05/05/2026 18:11

@Borborygmus thank you!

LouiseK93 · 05/05/2026 18:12

Mine are peperami noodles, bacon favour cheesestrings, chocolate cornflakes and the original dairylea lunchable pizza :) oh! And SunnyD

Toffee and mallow eggs 😭

Nobody I know remembers these! The highlight of my Easter many moons ago. My grandma would buy me one in John Menzies with her newspaper. If it wasn't Easter, it would be a stick of barley sugar.

wineandcheeseplease · 05/05/2026 18:14

Princes tinned hot chicken curry.
They only do mild now. Breaks my little heart

BIWI · 05/05/2026 18:14

I used to love those @Mykneesareshot - I do remember them!

My mum used to love Border eggs; they were wrapped in a tartan foil and had (I think) a chocolatey mousse filling.
