Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

My dh still gets disproportionately cross when he can't find Golden Crinkle CrunchBiscuits and regularly goes searching for them, despite them.being discontinued about 96. I know you can get cream ones but apparently they are Not The Same.
My dsis asked me to bring her(several) bags of Clarnico Mint Creams when I visited her in Australia last year. Again they were discontinued about 12 years ago. I miss them even though I rarely bought them.

Tesco used to sell a cake called passion cake in the 80s. It's long been discontinued but I miss it.

Also Morrisons sold red bananas for a brief period in about 2009. I have not seen them since. Pity because I thought they were nicer than yellow ones.

Passion cake was rebranded as Carrot Cake
I remember having a huge slice in Camden Lock.about that time

excelledyourself · 04/05/2026 19:17

Oh, and Weight Watchers chicken and mushroom pasta. I was skinny then, and wasn’t eating them for weight loss, so would eat two of them

AppleKatie · 04/05/2026 19:18

What fruit polos have gone as well?!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/05/2026 19:18

Terrys used to do a chocolate sweet like two hazelnut in caramel halves in the shape of a walnut or hazelnut maybe . Covered in gold foil.
I only remember them being around at Christmas .

Petrolitis · 04/05/2026 19:19

Seabrooks spring onion flavour crisps and Rowntrees Cabana bar.

😪

Is Passion Cake a carrot cake with added crushed pineapple ?

inickedthisname · 04/05/2026 19:21

One year, about 20 years ago, I found an Easter egg which was white chocolate with tiny little refreshers in (the pastel coloured fizzy sweets, not the chewy bars). It was surprisingly delicious and they have never made one since, as far as I know.

Wouldcou · 04/05/2026 19:21

Coffee custard creams. They had round circles on top of the biscuit have t had it for 20 years.

I'm nearly 68. I really miss Amazin' Raisin chocolate bars and the legendary Aztec bar (both available in the early 1970s).

And oh, the chunky dairy milk bars we got then- and the Milk Tray bar!

I'm ...ahem...around about this age and I've never recovered from the 1967 withdrawal of Kelloggs Sugar Stars. Ice cold milk = Heaven in a bowl. I have teeth as a direct result of this marketing move though so there's an upside !

SpanThatWorld · 04/05/2026 19:22

Peppermint Wispa.

Marvellous cure for pregnancy nausea

Sorry about your drink.

Oh gosh were they the little garlic bread disc things that your Mum would bring out as nibbles for the "adults" - oh wow what a memory! Why do they always attack us on the snack front, so unreasonable.

Phineas Fogg Garlic Croutons - very grown up and the garlic taste stayed with you for days!

SpringSe · 04/05/2026 19:24

Sara Lee Pecan Danish, it was frozen and my mum cooked it for dessert every Sunday, it was amazing!

Whenever there is a thread like this I go straight to pining for ready salted potato triangles. Think last had them about 20 years ago then they just disappeared. And original recipe original lucozade. They ruined it about 10 years ago.

Are these like the M and S Deltas? Very much missed.

Also the M and S roast chicken sandwich

ready salted chipsticks 😢
pyramints 😢

Original Special K cereal from 1970’s so much better than the one you can buy today.

Oh yes! They were little puffy things but not like rice crispies.
I saw a quote about Thorntons. Just about everything. Boxes of toffee in different flavours with.random sized chunks. Do you know they are uniform sized and individually wrapped? And taste awful. Cream mice. And continentals...I'd buy a quarter on.a friday night, eat some on.the bus then the rest id share with mum and dad. I used to be given the continental casket for special occasions- solid chocolate base, nougat walls and filled with continentals.

Mint Cracknel and Cheesy Criss Cross my 1980s go to snacks. Actually probably a godsend they no longer exist as both were far from healthy!!!

I found Mint Cracknel in a specialist South African food shop a couple of years ago.

So good

nightowlzzz · 04/05/2026 19:29

In the early 2000s the Co-op made a blueberry ice cream with cinnamon biscuit pieces. It was divine and I still think about it!

RestaurantQualityWife · 04/05/2026 19:29

Bounty Dark. Absolute travesty that they're gone.

Pasta n Sauce Mushroom and Wine was immense, I've been pinning for over a decade! The only decent flavour.

ElenOfTheWays · 04/05/2026 19:29

Boiledbeetle · 04/05/2026 14:28

I loved the treacle one.

I used to eat those in the '70s. Proper old school

nightowlzzz · 04/05/2026 19:30

Also what happened to Sweet and Sour Super Noodles?!

Grizelina · 04/05/2026 19:30

Original walkers cheese and onion and salt and vinegar crisps! They were a bit greasy but much better than the ones they have now! Just had some crisps in France and they were similar to dry baked ones - revolting!

theworldisadarkplace · 04/05/2026 19:31

I'm sure when Pot Noodles first came out (mid 80s maybe?) there was a cheese and tomato one. Bloody lovely!

And I still mourn the red Bounty bar...

Also, was there a cereal consisting of little balls? A bit like Golden Grahams, maybe a precursor to those.

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

that stll exists

Happyjoe · 04/05/2026 19:35

Toffos but only because of the banana one.

My mum couldn't bake, she'd get us the Sara Lee choc gateaux every birthday, still fond memories :-)
