Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

Dark chocolate bounty- the red one 😭

This is mine too, wish they would bring it back the milk chocolate one just isn't as good :(

TrashPanda · 04/05/2026 18:42

Sainsburys classic cola, better than Coca Cola
Hot chicken curry pot noodle in the bright pink pot, the current peri-peri one is not the same
Smiths ready salted chipsticks, one of the few things I could keep down in my first pregnancy

chicken boil. I'd just got 'into' it in a bug way as my comforting cup of something hot at 3.00am while waiting for cat to come in. And it disappeared. I even wrote to Nestle (?) to ask about it as it disappeared in covid and I thought it might be 'just' a supply problem.....but no. There was a jar for sale on ebay for £50......and the jars are half the size of a beef bovril jar. Chicken oxo cubes nowhere near the taste.

Ilovemyshed · 04/05/2026 18:06

@BiteSizedLife still sold in Tesco

Maybe the last of the stock.

Not been in stock since forever round here and I recently disovered that the company has discontinued it :-(

I believe this is a recent change. If you like it I would stock up if your local still has it!

PinkCrab · 04/05/2026 18:49

Mine is the Jam on Toast Yorkshire Teabags. They were discontinued almost two years ago. It was my morning ritual to have it as my first cup of tea in the morning then one day they vanished whilst I was heavily pregnant. Some very kind friends went to the end of the earth to source me some boxes from random people on Facebook who had them lurking in the cupboard but I’ve used up my supply now bar 1 which I’m saving for an unknown special occasion. Morrisons do a Jam Doughnut tea bag which I’ve stocked up on as a very good replacement but it’s not the same.

If anyonehas any boxes lurking in the cupboard please do slide into my DMs, will pay handsomely!!

I don't pine any discontinued food but I pine for how food used to taste before they took all the sugar and salt out things. Apart from coca cola all pop with tastes horrible. Heinz beans taste bland and loads of runny juice in them. Even Hellman"s mayo isn't the same. It used to be thick and creamy but no its watery and weird. For example if I make coleslaw or tuna mayo the mayo seems to slide off and you end up with this watery stuff at the bottom of the tub. It's more noticeable if you leave in the fridge overnight and use next day. The texture of sweets like haribo aren't the same either. They're soft and chewy where as they used to be much firmer in texture. I went to an old fashioned sweet shop recently and got red liquorice wheels and it was delicious and the bon bons were rock hard. Just how they used to taste.

Freschetta frozen pizzas, I guess in the 90s, they had this lovely crust that would rise while it cooked, they were delicious. And more recently, Waitrose keralan chicken fry ready meal, it was such an easy and delicious meal and I’m still annoyed it disappeared a couple of years ago. And balsen chocolate biscuits, they’re still selling something that looks the same but they only have a very very thin layer of chocolate now. I want the old ones back.

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 04/05/2026 18:54

I think it was Kelloggs that did a cereal called Start. It was delicious 😋

teraculum29 · 04/05/2026 18:55

Lidl's Teddy Bears,
they were recalled last year in April, and they never got back on shelfs.

we loved them. Big brands are not as nice

So many things have gone or changed. I too miss caramac, break away bars, wagon wheels the size of your hand. I never see fry's turkish delight, turkey dinosaurs (probably for the best) and peach melba mousse. I couldn't believe that I saw walnut whips without the walnut and they have shrunk so much!

Mint Cracknel and Cheesy Criss Cross my 1980s go to snacks. Actually probably a godsend they no longer exist as both were far from healthy!!!

Yes to cheesy criss cross! My friend always got one in her packed lunch around1981 but didn't like them so she gave them to me.

butterfliesandrainbows2022 · 04/05/2026 18:57

Asda in the Vegetarian freezer section early 00's had I think it was a Tomato/Cheese maybe Potato? snack. They were triangles and tasted like pizza soooo nice. I think they were in a box

Cadbury's Icebreaker chocolate.
Beef Wotsits
Quorn taco mince
Bachelor's Pasta & sauce Mushroom and wine flavour.

Read the whole thread hoping someone would've said Bachelor's mushroom and white wine pasta.

I miss these cakes from Thornton! They were delicious- and discontinued some years ago ☹️

This is going to be a “mourning the things that could have been” for me, as I never tried one but they look amazing!

MrsClatterbuck · 04/05/2026 19:01

Tillow4ever · 04/05/2026 13:56

Agree - they’re syrup sponge in the tin as well! God I miss them.

Loved these so did dh. Had them often mostly the golden syrup one and the strawberry or raspberry jam one. Dh had custard and I preferred fresh cream.

inickedthisname · 04/05/2026 19:02

For me:
Sunbreaks (biscuits)
Mars Delight
Garlic and parsley mini breadsticks from Tesco - they were sold near the deli stuff

I pine for my Mum's cooking. I'm a terrible cook.

And as an aside, I pine for discontinued perfume. Gucci Envy. RIP

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/05/2026 19:05

I used to be able to get hash browns in Lidl in Denmark, but they stopped. No hash browns for me.

Dr Oetker had a lovely pizza with chicken, spinach and sweetcorn. MMM.

Bedheadbeachbum · 04/05/2026 19:05

Marble chocolate bar - I can taste it.

I would pay good money for a Dairy Milk pocket chocolate bar from the 90s with the old recipe.

FrodisCapering · 04/05/2026 13:49

Fuse bars. Why did they get rid of them???

Just came here to mourn the loss of the Fuse bar.

chickenpotnoodle · 04/05/2026 19:06

Not sure if its here - not read them all - how Quality Street used to be in the 80's - a huge never ending tin of delights - coffee creme and turkish delights- the current tins not a patch on yesteryear

Spangles

AInightingale · 04/05/2026 18:25

The new cheese Nik naks are nothing like the old Cream Cheesy flavour @Failedcrunchymum. I bought them recently and they were an abomination and we ate three and binned the rest.

I thought as much! Thankyou, that saves me from wasting my money.

CharlesPetrescu · 04/05/2026 19:12

Tesco used to sell a cake called passion cake in the 80s. It's long been discontinued but I miss it.

Also Morrisons sold red bananas for a brief period in about 2009. I have not seen them since. Pity because I thought they were nicer than yellow ones.

excelledyourself · 04/05/2026 19:14

Mint Woppa’s, turkey melts, mince crispy pancakes, Drifters, Marbles, and McCain micro chicken wings

Fiendish Feet - They were half jelly/juice and half creamy yoghurt. They were so good.

Just seeing that StIvel logo reminds me StIvel Gold spread...it was so disgusting - anyone remember that?

My mum was on a constant diet (despite always being skinny) and this was the only spread allowed in the house - no marg and, god forbid, no butter. Best thing about eating at friends' houses was marg/butter. Don't bring Gold back!

Edited

Back in the mid 90s when I joined a Rosemary conley diet club, the only permitted spread was Gold because it was only 3% fat. It was bloody awful!
