Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

I loved those and chicken flavour Ringos. Also Surprise peas which were the nicest tasting peas and so handy to have in the cupboard.

chicken flavour Ringos? Are you having a laugh?! I loved the cheese and onion and the salt and vinegar, but I have no memory of chicken ones.

Mumstheword1983 · 04/05/2026 16:36

Romantica. It was an ice cream cake. Loved it.

@Xanadu78 I’m glad you remember them as no one else ever does. Aged 12 ish I had a terrible obsession with those hot lemon puddings. I couldn’t stop thinking about them until I ate one, then as soon as I’d finished it, I’d be thinking about the next one. I still think about them now sometimes then tell myself they probably weren’t as nice as I remembered.

I miss Nutty Bars. To give you an idea of how long ago they were (wrongly) discontinued, they were sold for 16p!

Marks & Sparks used to sell a small bar of chocolate that was milk, dark and white chocolate in layers.

Trio biscuits. I don’t miss the adverts though.

Red Bounties & Caramac, obviously.

Edited

Quite recently (well, last 15 years or so), they did one with mint and I think milk and dark layers. I was so sad when they stopped it.

x2boys · 04/05/2026 16:38

Country store it was muslie from the 80,s but really thick tasty nothing has ever come close 😪

GenialHarrietGrouty · 04/05/2026 16:38

Many, many years ago M&S did a small sausage roll with tomato. Not sure how they made it, but it had lovely pastry and was my go-to snack treat. Bring it back, I say.

RepublicOfPirates · 04/05/2026 16:39

Waitrose essential vinigarette, loved it.

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 04/05/2026 16:41

Vice versa chocolates - a bit like big M&Ms, with a mix of milk chocolate in white choc shells and white chocolate in milk choc shells.

Also dark chocolate bounties and Fuse bars. I’m all about the chocolate!

I miss Surprise peas

sweet cigarettes (hard ones in boxes) are still around although not packaged as cigarettes and no red tip.

the soft candy sticks, coconut mushrooms and sweet tobacco have recently been discontinued

You can still get coconut mushrooms, my DD gets me a jar from Amazon for my birthday every year. And my mum got me bag a few weeks ago, possibly from Home Bargains.

Edit: OMG! I just googled to make sure and you're right! Gutted!! 😫

Princessbananahamock · 04/05/2026 16:41

Breakfast slices they were made by Sainsbury’s loved waking up to those on a Sunday morning with a hangover !

Walkers Bitza Pizza
Can’t remember the name. They were mini cheese flavour biscuits shaped many ways - club suit, heart, oval etc.
Maverick bars

Cheese savouries! Tesco do a version, they aren't too bad.

Aldi Specially Selected Belgian Chocolate Cheesecake. Best chocolate cheesecake ever. The base was wonderfully buttery and the chocolate properly rich. Amazing value as well. Every time I go into an Aldi I always have a look and am always disappointed:(

The BBQ spare rib and chips sold over the way when I was a child. We had them on Tuesdays. Loved them.

bananaskin123 · 04/05/2026 16:43

Black and white liquorish mints. Liquorice on the top, then a layer of white, slightly minty, then liquorice on the bottom. Mostly seen in these big jars in sweet shops. Loved them.

Iamnotalemming · 04/05/2026 16:43

Not quite on point but I miss Roses and Quality Street the way they tasted in the 1990s. The brown sludge they put in wrappers these days is no comparison.

It is frozen but I did see fresh one in Waitrose as well about a year ago.

If you're OK with the frozen one (great for a Ragu base) then Tesco's is the same price for twice the size.

Monty36 · 04/05/2026 16:44

Someone has mentioned funny face ice cream. Loved those.

Spagbol22 · 04/05/2026 16:46

Clusters cereal, bran flakes with sweet oaty clusters 😿

Walnut whips are still around but I'm not sure if they still have the walnut on top.

I think only at Christmas!

That's an absolute abomination! Just why?! 😭 X

Do you mean Farmhouse Bran (or something similar)? I loved that. I did find it once years ago and it had been rebranded as ‘(Something) Curls’. I used to eat it for breakfast and dry out of the packet for a tasty snack 😀

Yes I think it was Farmhouse Bran. So good you could eat it as a snack! All Bran or Bran Flakes don't quite cut it as a snack.

Ginburee · 04/05/2026 16:48

McVities fruit jasper biscuits, secret bars, Spangled, Snaps spicy tomato crisps.

letsdawnce · 04/05/2026 16:49

I wish I knew why Mars don't bring back the Mars Delight as it is so frequently mentioned on threads like this, here and elsewhere. They were so good!

For me, Smiths salt and vinegar crisps - they had a really strong flavour without being sour, and they were always perfectly cooked. They still seem to make cheese and onion as well as ready salted, but the salt and vinegar disappeared a few years back.

Linda McCartney hoisin duck bites
Linda McCartney veggie chicken bucket
Quorn Thai bites
The Collective had amazing plant-based yogurts that I miss, too.
Waitrose had an amazing sweet potato katsu curry wrap that I got a bit addicted to last year - I've tried and tried to recreate it, but it's nowhere near as good.

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 16:34

I have no idea! Were they herby and tomatoey and cheesy? haha clueless, apologies!

Yes, they were! You could only have a few because they'd skin the roof of your mouth.
