Pining for discontinued foods! (lighthearted) rant!

1000 replies

summerchild82 · 04/05/2026 13:40

About 20 years ago when I was at Uni, I lived opposite a LIDL (back when you had to find a carboard box to carry your stuff around!). They used to do a Ristorante Frutti Di Mare frozen pizza (I think it was 2 in a box) and it still pisses me off that it was discontinued. It wasn't just prawns, it had mussels and other stuff (possibly olives) on it. I still think about the bastard things today and I just thought there must be others who have their long lost foods.

Others for me are Brannigans crisps and more recently, Fries To Go! Oh how I could demolish some Fries To Go right now!

What are yours? Join in my rant :)

Whenever there is a thread like this I go straight to pining for ready salted potato triangles. Think last had them about 20 years ago then they just disappeared. And original recipe original lucozade. They ruined it about 10 years ago.

Yep I always go for M&S deltas on threads like these

Barcodescanner22 · 04/05/2026 16:09

I miss Surprise peas

sweet cigarettes (hard ones in boxes) are still around although not packaged as cigarettes and no red tip.

the soft candy sticks, coconut mushrooms and sweet tobacco have recently been discontinued

You can get similar to mint cracknel in a bar called Peppermint Crisp. It is from SA so you can buy it on SA food pages online. With this though you bite the ends off and suck milk up through the middle as the mint is in straw like pieces inside. Yummy!

I’ve tried it. Close but not quite the same or maybe it’s just age and my taste buds!

Lidl used to sell an amazing sunflower seed bread like half pumpernickel half brown bread (long long ago)

Oh yes they were really nice 😭 Did you save this photo all those years? Or the empty packet? 😂

Sara Lee chocolate gateaux. I LOVED it, could eat one right now.

My now DH took me to see his parents in winter and we took their dogs out for a walk in local woods, which I said resembled a Sara Lee chocolate gateau, the consistency was identical! If ever we talk about those woods, the Sara Lee reference pops out.

I miss Texans.

Why did Heinz stop making those tinned puddings? Everyone loved them, dead easy, 2 mins in a microwave, instant custard and how fabulous!

When i was a kid my mum used to buy these mini sausage rolls except instead of sausage in the middle it was a really creamy white mixture which had carrots peas and sweetcorn in. I have never found them as an adult and often think of them. They may have been Iceland

Yes! I loved those!! I think Iceland too.

For me the veggie stuff that I did live that suddenly does no exist no more. The quorn lamb grills I did used to love years and years ago, or the quorn pork pie. The sausage patties etc. so much disappointing

The Quorn lamb grills were so delicious!

Maille Bearnaise sauce in a jar. I haven't found a replacement which is a patch on it.

Yes I liked that too-

These! But specifically the M&S version, which were called Deltas. I adored them.

Yes! I bloody loved Deltas. Also, M&S used to do something called Cheese Snax Mix at Christmas which included something very similar to Deltas and they stopped doing them in 2019. I was bereft and still check every Christmas to see if they’ve bought them back.

Spicy tomato snaps! 😭

I loved those and chicken flavour Ringos. Also Surprise peas which were the nicest tasting peas and so handy to have in the cupboard.

ThisJadeBear · 04/05/2026 16:15

If you were a kid in the 70s/80s the Golden Cup chocolate bar. It had caramel in it.
It was more expensive than other bars so it was a rare treat but I can still close my eyes and dream about demolishing one now.
All chocolate was lovely then.
Now it’s like blocks of brown lard

Ooh ice magic the stuff which went onto ice cream as a thick chocolate sauce and went solid as soon as it hit the ice cream.

you can still get it at marks I think https://www.ocado.com/search?q=cracked%20shell
or make your own https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/244438/instant-chocolate-hard-shell/

Home Pride used to do a sauce that my mum used with her meatballs (she made the meatballs herself and tried to make her own sauce but we all preferred this sauce 🙄). When we realised it was being discontinued we stocked up but alas our supply ran out decades ago.

M&S used to do the most beautiful chicken escalopes but they stopped them over a decade ago.

More recently M&S stopped doing their Bang Bang dip, I'd only just discovered it in the months prior so that was a blow, but probably for the best as I was going through a tub every few days.

Similarly Waitrose used to do a lovely pecorino and basil dip that they discontinued years ago.

My final one isn't a food. It's a deodorant. Vaseline used to do a "cotton fresh" deodorant which they suddenly stopped and I still miss it 20+ years later.

Talisin · 04/05/2026 16:17

Also Rancheros. I know they still technically exist but they taste NOTHING like the old ones.

The Aldi version (fiesta) are decent. Properly solid middle that you have to bite into

Do they do them in mint?!

It's a bit specific and boring - but Tesco used to do, in their prepared veg section, a thing called "chef's base". It was very finely chopped up carrot, celery, onion and garlic, but very fine and fresh, not frozen.
I loved that stuff because as well as using it in cooking, I used it mix it into all my kids sandwiches and wraps to get more veg into them and because it was so fine, you could eat it raw.
I miss it. I know I could just make it myself, but its a faff to get the pieces that tiny.
They also used to do spaghetti made of butternut squash that I haven't seen for ages.

It is frozen but I did see fresh one in Waitrose as well about a year ago.

Pacers
ice magic
Spangles
Freshen Up chewing gum
cherry garcia ice cream
Boasters biscuits
M & S cheese and celery sandwich - the one from the late 80s/ 90s
A M& S ready meal that was fresh pasta with a red wine type sauce and mushrooms. Nobody remembers it but it was utterly delicious

Fruit rocks from Thorntons.

I still miss findus crispy pancakes, the chicken curry ones 😔

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 04/05/2026 16:21

That's the one I buy now for cooking (yes, I'm lazy) but this one was fresh and it was just nice to chuck in sandwiches or mix in with pasta or something. And it was much finer than the frozen.

Thanks though!
