AIBU to apologise after DH barked at the neighbour's dog?

Last year the neighbour behind us got a small dog. It yaps.

Anyway DH has been complaining to me about this irritating dog ever since she got it and admittedly it is very annoying but what can you do? It’s during the day and it’s not constant.

He’s been away with work for 3 days and has come back grumpy and tired - last night he went outside to check on his plants and the dog started yapping. DH went absolutely bonkers, started running up and down the fence barking and snarling like a dog until the woman came out and hastily took her dog back inside. Mortified!! I know he was tired but Jesus he was acting like a psychopath

Hes back at work today and she’s sat outside in the sun - do I pop my head over and apologise/explain or leave it and assume we’re no longer on good terms 😬

Our neighbour has a barky dog but the dog's bark doesn't bother me because it is a low pitched bark that just isn't annoying. However, my friend's dog has a high pitched yap that is like a form of torture. I actually struggle to be around it. If she lived next door, it probably would send me a bit berserk.

Apologizing to your neighbour seems like a really disloyal thing to do to your husband.

Tbh, I think if your DH does this he needs some kind of help!!! He sounds like he had some kind of psychotic episode. I would assume your neighbour thinks DH is mentally unwell.

Or relax. People can react like that when they lose their temper briefly. Let’s not get out the straight jacket over a brief overreaction to an annoying yapping dog.

I would use it as an opportunity to speak to her about the yapping. Something like - "I am sorry that my husband went a bit mad at your dog last night but the constant barking can be quite wearing. I appreciate all dogs bark to some extent but do you think there's anything you can do to keep it quiet?"

Exactly, kind of like good cop bad cop. Always a good strategy!

Harhar · 24/04/2026 12:07

You’re all expecting the dog to control its impulses but not the man. I would be royally turned off if I saw my husband barking at a fence.

B0D · 24/04/2026 12:20

I don’t think you should apologise but you should say something to break the ice if you’re feeling uncomfortable

😂 me too. Not sure I’d be able to get over this level of pure idiocy.

Thank god for you. I can’t work out why people think he’s either a hero or a comedy genius. 😬

Or in fact neither.

We have a neighbor who allows their yorkie outside all day to mentally barking at absolutely nothing & the neighbor does F all about it. I wear ear plugs it’s so annoying. I wouldn’t DREAM of allowing a pet outside all day to behave that way so your neighbor probably is BU.

My husband barks at our neighbours dogs. I just roll my eyes, nothing to do with me 😊

AnonSugar · 24/04/2026 18:17

What in the fucking world 🤣

Laura95167 · 24/04/2026 18:19

Youre not responsibke for him he can handle his own apologies

Bristolandlazy · 24/04/2026 18:21

Barking dogs drive me insane, good for him. Perhaps she'll keep the dog in more to keep it away from the crazy neighbour.

I wanted to move when we had a happy dog next door.

pollymere · 24/04/2026 18:43

Sorry... Your neighbour has a dog that is so irritating your DH barked at it and you think you're the ones in the wrong here?

Your neighbour needs to apologise and get the dog in order. You need to have your DH's back on this one!

If he was rational about it then maybe. But he’s behaving like a 5yo. I don’t think he should apologise as it’s only himself he’s not embarrassed

Buffs · 24/04/2026 20:02

Yappy dogs drive me bonkers. I sympathize with your husband,he understandably snapped.

Harhar · 24/04/2026 20:03

Honestly. Talk to the neighbours if you have a problem. Don’t run up and down the fence line pretending to be a dog. It’s not funny, it’s fucking weird.

Frillysweetpea · 24/04/2026 20:11

Greyblankie · 23/04/2026 13:54

She does take it back in though! This is what I mean we can’t complain as it’s not constant, just very regular

Your DH is out of order then and he knows it which is why he is pretending it didn't happen! But it sounds like your neighbour knows it is a pain for you and does her best and unless she makes a fuss about what he did I'd forget it. It's one of those things that happen unless you can afford to live in a mansion with acres of land.

LoopyLoo1991 · 24/04/2026 20:12

Just leave it.
Plus reading your hubby's antics gave me the biggest laugh I've had all day! 😂

That's hilarious, Team DH all the way

Same, he's done nothing wrong. No way should he apologise, it's hilarious and if the neighbour doesn't like it, then she knows what she can do.

Harhar · 24/04/2026 20:21

No, he’s done nothing wrong. Running up and down a fence line in the garden barking like a dog is really normal for a grown man. And funny too apparently. Jesus wept.

Well, it got the fucking annoying yappy dog taken back inside, so good result.

Harhar · 24/04/2026 20:50

Yeah great result if you want a lunatic for a husband.

My thoughts exactly! I found this hilarious! 😂
