To think garden wind chimes should be banned?!!

Clearly our neighbours don't seem to think so. We've our bedroom window on the latch because it's a little warm (perimeno) and they are so annoyingly noisy!!

They’re annoying but there are worse noises.

Are they wood or metal? I actually quite like the wooden ones. The metal ones not so much.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 11/04/2026 00:19

@StopUsingChatGPT Definitely metal! Incredibly clangy!! Perhaps it's just my age... 😆

Do you have your own brand of noise? I love wind chimes and they wouldn't bother me, but it's a bit inconsiderate to stick them up against your neighbour's bedroom and let them ring at night if it's windy.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 11/04/2026 00:23

@YayRain I wouldn't want a noisy garden personally! They're pretty loud!

But do you have things that your neighbours have to put up with?

I have wind chimes but I only got them because that's all the consideration my neighbours deserve. If they were quieter themselves, I'd have returned the favour and not got them. But even then, it's nowhere near their bedrooms. I have always loved wind chimes. They have to be good quality and not clangers though.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 11/04/2026 00:28

@YayRain We're fortunate in that we are detached, but we do have a 5 yo! 😀

It is relentless, selfish, infuriating, utterly pointless noise pollution. Anyone who has them up can go fuck themselves.

Whatwouldnanado · 11/04/2026 00:33

Yes. And can we have restrictions on times for lawn mowing? Drives me nuts.

But do you also say, "Anyone who wants me to be quieter in my own back garden can go fuck themselves" ? Because my neighbours are like that and are finding out that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

We have them, we have no near neighbours. My dd was given them by her uncle shortly before he died. She’s autistic, but finds the chimes soothing, and a nice memory of her uncle who was one of life’s rare gems, and a thoroughly decent bloke.

That's lovely. My DD also loves wind chimes. I did tell her that if she wanted to put them outside her bedroom we'd need to check with the neighbours. They have a bedroom on that side, though I don't think it's used. She decided she was happy for them to go on the other side of the house, so now the neighbours that don't deserve asking have to deal with them. For all I know they like them anyway.

RubyFatball · 11/04/2026 00:44

Yes, the dickheads two doors down have them and I fantasise about snipping the strings with scissors under the cover of darkness.
Weirdly DH, who is ADHD and can’t bear the noise of a child playing or a shirt being ironed, commented recently how charming he finds them. Bloody idiot.

Pinkychilla · 11/04/2026 00:45

I accidently voted the wrong way and now I can change it! I have this problem too! Lying awake listening to them whem you cant get to sleep. So annnoying!! I have visons of chopping them down 😂

EveyHammond · 11/04/2026 00:48

personally i like them better than shouty neighbours etc

Kim5678 · 11/04/2026 00:50

They are so bloody annoying! The randomness of them with tinkly notes that don’t go together arghh. My neighbour had some and I had to ask them to take them down because they were driving me insane and waking me up.

If they are tuned ones they will be harmonious and go together. Cheap ones are horrible.

My response to a request to take them down would depend which neighbour you are to me. The ones on the right. "Sure. Sorry." The ones on the left? "No."

Galtymore · 11/04/2026 00:58

I find the noise from wind chimes quite spooky 👻
I don’t think it’s just me…or is it?

VivienneDelacroix · 11/04/2026 01:00

I thought I was the only person grumpy enough to hate wind chimes. DH gets to listen to me complaining about the selfishmess of them. Our neighbour behind us has them. I am so desperate to pull them down (they're oddly on the outside wall of his house, but in his garden), but he also has a CCTV camera there too. Probably because he suspects someone will one day rip them down.

ultracynic · 11/04/2026 01:03

I have big wind chimes hanging from a tree, they’re about a metre tall and have a very low chiming sound, not at all tinkly. I love them, and don’t care what my neighbours think as they let their dogs yap all the time.

AliceNotInChains · 11/04/2026 01:21

My sister has them and they irritate me so much. I cellotaped them all together last time I was there. I bet she hasn’t even noticed as she’s not mentioned it yet. I reckon her neighbours have noticed more than her!

pinck · 11/04/2026 01:35

We have them on our front porch and I genuinely can’t hear them inside the house unless I’m basically standing right by the door, so I’m not entirely sure how the neighbours would be hearing them, let alone being bothered by them.

Good point. I sometimes have morning coffee in bed with the back door open, just so I can enjoy them. And I'm closest to them.

Hadn’t considered the sellotape approach, might be more stealthy than scissors

Trust me they ca hear them and they curse you 😂

Sartre · 11/04/2026 07:59

I think there’s worse noises personally. I’d rather hear those than the shit music someone on our street enjoys playing whenever the sun is out, or the cackling witchy laugh of the woman from that house (can you tell I’m not a fan?)
