To think garden wind chimes should be banned?!!

Clearly our neighbours don't seem to think so. We've our bedroom window on the latch because it's a little warm (perimeno) and they are so annoyingly noisy!!

All intrusive noise is very wearing and debilitating, when it goes on and on. This doesn’t need to be a competition of suffering. If you’re experiencing one sort of persistent noise, then that should give some understanding and sympathy withothers who are suffering differently.

The sound of a persistently dripping tap can drive people to distraction.

I can extend the sympathy and understanding when people express less vitriol. Others have mentioned it chronic illness, sensory issues etc. Completely understandable. However when you live in a detached home, it's in someone else's garden presumably with some space, and it's...annoying? Then it's noise pollution, should be banned and curse out people who have them? Bit much for me.

If it doesn't meet a threshold for a formal complaint to a 3rd party then I think you have to accept you can't control it or change it, and expend your energy elsewhere.

If you'd like to compete I have a few plastic medals in the drawer, but I'd recommend against seeing sharing thoughts and personal experiences as a competitive sport on an "AIBU" forum thread.

But do you also say, "Anyone who wants me to be quieter in my own back garden can go fuck themselves" ? Because my neighbours are like that and are finding out that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Think you may have just given some of the posters with those obnoxious noisy neighbours a solution. Provided they can cope with the noise themselves.

Not sure about a solution. My wind chimes aren't a tit for tat or attempt to annoy the neighbours (bonus if they do). It's merely that I feel like I am able to do something I've always wanted to do, due to their behaviour. It's like they gave me the freedom to do something I didn't do out of consideration before. If that makes sense. I got my wind chimes for me. I wanted them for a long time. I love wind chimes. The consideration factor was just wiped out. I am living my life more freely so, in a sense, they gave me a gift.

Yes. And can we have restrictions on times for lawn mowing? Drives me nuts.

I’m interested in what times you think are appropriate for mowing. There was a complaint on our village FB page about our Lawn mowing. We are in a rural village, mainly OAPs, no young children, large gardens and we mowed between 6 and 8pm on a Saturday. We work and had also been out that day and the forecast wasn’t good for Sunday. Apparently we completely ruined their G and T time!

Wasn't talking about you personally, just thinking of some of the past threads from people who have some appalling people next to them.

It's usually in your council by laws but some neighbours are more tolerant than others.

MomsGotInk · 12/04/2026 08:31

We used to have some big wooden ones at the very bottom of our garden-not near anyone’s house/windows. The bad weather broke them & I haven’t replaced them. I prefer the wooden ones but I don’t mind them in general. Mind you,my neighbours enjoy screaming/shouting & letting their dogs bark constantly which I find a lot more disturbing to listen to. They also have a fondness for fireworks most of the year & burning stinking fires every day that isn’t raining. Wind chimes aren’t really on my annoyance radar!

saturdaychild · 12/04/2026 09:03

You’d hate living by me! I have two sets. 😂

DiscoBeat · 12/04/2026 09:06

I don't like them and I'm sure the birds don't either!
Add to that flags, there's a garden near us that has an enormous union Jack and before they put it up it was all greenery. Now the eye is drawn to that all the time. And at Christmas they have to put up a santa one as well (at least that one is temporary)

Zerodarkforty · 12/04/2026 10:30

The thing is though that noise travels. So even if you’re not being considerate to your immediate neighbours who also make noise, you’re annoying the other neighbours in your area who can hear it.

I have big wind chimes hanging from a tree, they’re about a metre tall and have a very low chiming sound, not at all tinkly. I love them, and don’t care what my neighbours think as they let their dogs yap all the time.

Do please tell which brand?

My neighbours two doors away are retired and sit in their garden with a radio playing all day, every day. It's loud enough that we can hear muffled talking, the base and the repetitive rhythm, but not the melody, so we can't tell what song is playing, or what is being said, just this annoying noise. They've been there three years and it's driving me nuts. I may put a polite note through their door soon, requesting them to reduce the volume slightly. If they don't, I'll dig my wind chimes out of the shed and hang them up.

Please do it, for all of us who also have to deal with this sort of situation but for various nuanced reasons, cannot do anything about it!

Why not just have a chat about it?
I'd be more receptive to a contestants a note. It would give me a chance to apologise for disturbing or possibly work out a compr eg, when you are likely to be out so I could listen without disturbing you.

GardeningMummy · 12/04/2026 10:52

We have horrible neighbours. They hate us simply & purely because my house is social housing and they paid £550k for theirs, so of course they’re ‘above’ us…… Won’t allow their DD to play with my DD because she Autism (yes, really), refused to thank me when I saved their dog’s life, started a smear campaign when I called out her DH on the street WhatsApp group for saying that my brother was “probably a drug addict” because he was wearing gym clothes when he popped round. Came home one day to find her husband hammering additional pieces of wood to my side of our adjoining fence (whilst their kids were playing on my child’s play equipment!) to give them privacy as his wife had complained about “THAT kid” (my DD) playing out whilst she was in their garden! Basically she didn’t want to have to see my autistic child whilst they were in their garden! I could go on…

So when my mum bought me a lovely metal wind chime, there was only one place it could go….On said fence, as close to their kitchen window as I could get it and there it will remain!

No idea, I bought them decades ago when I was a student and always had them hanging inside, only moved them to the garden 2 or 3 years ago. They’re heavy so it takes a fair breeze to get them chiming but it’s a wonderful low moody sound rather than high pitched tinkle.

For all you know they love it themselves.

They don't sound nice at all though.

Trust me they ca hear them and they curse you 😂

LOL nope—there’s a solid 20–30 feet between houses here and once again, I can’t even hear them inside my own house unless I’m at the door. In fact, the only noise I ever hear from the neighborhood is lawnmowers/snowblowers and the occasional kid/dog. Like, I don’t even hear my own kid playing basketball on the driveway, so I’m not sure how the hell my neighbors would hear anything but then again I'm not British and don't live in a packed housing estate so ....* *

LilacReader · 12/04/2026 15:16

Absolutely bloody hate them. I wish people realised that just because it's night time in the Summer, it doesn't mean the wind stops! Can they not take them down at night so we can leave leave our windows open and not be subjected to a constant noise to be able to cool down?!

UniquePinkSwan · 12/04/2026 15:17

I’d rather hear wind chimes than screaming children any day of the week

I had a mad moment and bought some wooden ones for my own garden. Sounded lovely in the shop. They annoyed me so much once I hung them in the garden, I had to take them down after a day. 😂

Ooooh thanks for the idea! My neighbours are literally the most evil people to ever walk this earth. Hell would be too good for the batshit psychos so I might just invest in a range of really cheap tuneless wind chimes.

Be careful though because honestly, if my neighbours had hung wind chimes years ago I'd have though, "Oh, great, they don't mind wind chimes," and got my own. I'd have taken it as they were okay with them.
