To think garden wind chimes should be banned?!!

Clearly our neighbours don't seem to think so. We've our bedroom window on the latch because it's a little warm (perimeno) and they are so annoyingly noisy!!

We were given some large chimes as a gift. They were hung up for about a week before we removed them. You couldn't hear them in the house if the doors and windows were shut, but as we sleep with windows slightly open the noise at night was affecting our sleep. We did consider taking them down at or tying them up at night but decided we weren't keen on the noise in the day anyway so got rid of them. Small wooden ones might be OK in a very gentle breeze, but I wouldn't want to inflict the jangling sound of metal ones on my neighbours.

RubyFatball · 11/04/2026 07:49

Trust me they ca hear them and they curse you 😂

This. Unless you have acres of land, the sound will travel, especially at night. Anyone who claims their neighbours won't hear - unless you're on a farm in the middle of nowhere - it will. And yeah, it's not a loud barking dog, or shouting, or revving, or whatever. But it is gratingly unnecessary noise pollution. There is no acceptable reason for it.

Anewuser · 11/04/2026 12:17

Well I’m not taking mine down. My disabled adult son has some outside his bedroom window - his room is downstairs. He has such a shit life and so little he can actually enjoy. He likes them so I’m not removing them.

If my neighbours complain then I’ll start complaining when they have fireworks, or a party, or a noisy barbecue or run their hot tub or everything else that pisses me off but I keep to myself.

But do you have things that your neighbours have to put up with?

I have wind chimes but I only got them because that's all the consideration my neighbours deserve. If they were quieter themselves, I'd have returned the favour and not got them. But even then, it's nowhere near their bedrooms. I have always loved wind chimes. They have to be good quality and not clangers though.

I have some as do my lovely neighbours next door. We love them. I do hope someone is annoyed by them though considering what we have to put up with.

Not everything annoying requires 'banning'.

YANBU to find garden wind chimes annoying. YABU to think this needs government to pass legislation.

I agree with this. The constant calls on Mumsnet for things that are irritating ‘to be banned’ are bizarre - some people want to live in a police state I think.

Wind chimes are annoying. You could perhaps go and talk to your neighbours about it. One possible solution is for them to hang them just inside their own window. Then they’ll chime when they open their windows, but are much less likely to annoy other people.

Livpool · 11/04/2026 13:15

I don’t get the hate for these - there are worse nosies. I don’t have them myself but would rather listen to them than our neighbour’s dog barking all day and night.

Livpool · 11/04/2026 13:17

AffableApple · 11/04/2026 00:30

It is relentless, selfish, infuriating, utterly pointless noise pollution. Anyone who has them up can go fuck themselves.

Really?! They are wind chimes not death metal being blasted at full volume. How can something so innocuous annoy you to this extent?!

PermanentTemporary · 11/04/2026 13:18

Im voting to ban. A friend was driven nearly mad by them in her neighbours’ garden. She has a chronic illness manageable if she can sleep and has enough airflow in her room. Like many on this thread, her neighbours appeared to believe their behaviour should be based on how much they liked her, and since she had the temerity to ask them to take the chimes in at night/when it was windy, therefore they should leave them out permanently. I think people who think like that are shits.

namechangeabc123 · 11/04/2026 13:23

I love the haunting sound of them. I’d like some in our garden but I’ve seen so many people on MN complaining about them over the years that I won’t get any in case it upsets the neighbours.

CarolinaLiar · 11/04/2026 13:26

They are the work of the devil. Only a complete arsehole would have them. There’s a house in our village that has them. I live nowhere near it. If I walk past it on a dog walk, those clanging chimes make me murderous. I just don’t get the selfishness.

CityGrownWillow · 11/04/2026 15:39

I'm on the fence with this one! My neighbor's have some lovely tinkly ones and they don't bother me. I have wooden ones and if it gets windy I throw them on the floor 🤣 it sounds like a child badly playing the drums in the wind. I also get them down each evening, actually I'm not sure why I bother with them at all! It gets really windy in my garden.
I'd hate to annoy people so I'm very anal with my chimes 🤣

Try living next to perpetual jangling?! And when you’re in a small garden and your next door neighbours have them, several of them, it really is full blast. Wooden ones are ok but metal ones most certainly are not.

Especially working from home in the summer when you want the doors and windows open. It’s awful. Particularly annoying when said neighbours are out at work, rarely in the garden and don’t have to listen to them.

Surely enough people on here in this and other threads have expressed how miserable it is for you to be able to inch forward to some understanding?!

HyacinthsAndPeonies · 11/04/2026 15:46

My neighbours two doors away are retired and sit in their garden with a radio playing all day, every day. It's loud enough that we can hear muffled talking, the base and the repetitive rhythm, but not the melody, so we can't tell what song is playing, or what is being said, just this annoying noise. They've been there three years and it's driving me nuts. I may put a polite note through their door soon, requesting them to reduce the volume slightly. If they don't, I'll dig my wind chimes out of the shed and hang them up.

Whatwouldnanado · 11/04/2026 00:33

Yes. And can we have restrictions on times for lawn mowing? Drives me nuts.

In my book after 9am is reasonable. A lot of people like me have to fit it around work and other responsibilities where they can, so sometimes I have to do mine at that time.

The neighbours? Can we buy tickets?

MauveFatball · 11/04/2026 16:04

I love my windchimes, have 3 lots of them in my quite big (long) garden and 6 inside my house next to opening windows.
A neighbour passively aggressively joked that he was tempted to cut the strings - I told him well if that happened I’d know it was him and that there were worse things to put up with like noisy electrical tools all weekend, smokey bbqs when my washing is out, music playing loudly and loud drunks…..all relevant to them. Not said anything since and my windchimes are intact. I might add the chimes are a good 50 feet from our houses.

Windywuss · 11/04/2026 16:32

My next door neighbour has them. I mentioned gently that I find them intrusive (used other words to be as diplomatic as possible). They said they couldn't hear them and left them up. They're up all the time. Constant tuneless awful noise. Sounds like dropping a metal tool repeatedly. Horrible sound. I have tinnitus as part of my chronic illness and it really aggravates it. i have to live in my earbuds.

But they are generally selfish and self centered people so I'm not surprised.

I know! Rather wind chimes than the thump of a ball.

Not as selfish as letting a kid whack a football up wooden fences. Sounds like bomb going off over and over.

StrikeForever · 11/04/2026 16:56

I love my wind chimes. They are not near anyone else windows. If they were and someone asked, I’d move them. I’m assuming the idea that they should be banned isn’t serious. If it is, you could be a bit batshit!

Wow! There is an arsehole in your post, but it’s not the owner of the house with the windchimes!

That must be so difficult for you. If a neighbour came to me like you did with your neighbour, I’d take mine down.

Have you spoken to them in a pleasant, non confrontational way? Why go straight to a note? They may be a bit thoughtless (in the literal sense), rather than selfish and may turn it right down if you let them know.

Historian0111101000 · 11/04/2026 17:06

I really can’t stand them.

I had a neighbour before who had them, and I just told them it was bothering me—they ended up taking it down. They might have hated me for it, but I didn’t care.

Why don’t you just ask them to remove it?”
