To think garden wind chimes should be banned?!!

Clearly our neighbours don't seem to think so. We've our bedroom window on the latch because it's a little warm (perimeno) and they are so annoyingly noisy!!

Not been.bothered by them But l.know if people who.live in flats whose lives have been made hell by outside wind charms near their bedrooms.

In my experience, dogs are infinitely less annoying. They don’t bark all day. I accept there are arsehole dog owners. But nothing is worse than wind chimes.

but then wind chimes dont always jingle all day ? that said i can understand your point

Zerodarkforty · 11/04/2026 19:41

I have neighbours at the back of me who have metal ones.

I dream of cutting the bloody thing down. Awful and invasive for someone that is very noise sensitive.

Carouseloflife · 11/04/2026 19:43

I love the sound of them

LibertyLily · 11/04/2026 20:30

I'm extremely noise sensitive and can't stand the sound of wind chimes (of any kind), although fortunately we've never had to live near anyone with them (yet!), but even those in garden centres etc make my teeth itch. I honestly can't see how anyone actually enjoys the cacophany!

My parents got some wooden ones after I left home - weird as, despite spending a small fortune on their garden, they never sat outside. I hated staying there one summer for six weeks when we were waiting for the purchase of our new house to go through. Having the windows open at night was unbearable, but my mum refused to take them down as - like a previous poster - she claimed she couldn't hear them.

Ladymeade · 11/04/2026 21:21

We have wood ones but we do take them down when it's really windy

DarkRose7 · 11/04/2026 21:29

Having experienced this myself in a mid terrace house, I find it utterly infuriating. Our neighbours had the clangy metal kind and had them no more than 2 metres from our daughter’s bedroom window. The amount to times she woke through the night on a windy night was terrible. Completely inconsiderate. Luckily they’ve moved now and peace has been restored to the neighbourhood.

winnieanddaisy · 11/04/2026 21:32

When my DD was about 20 we lived around the corner from my brother in law and his wife . There was a house on the corner (other half of my semi) between the two of us . They had a wind chime in the back garden which drove my DD mad when she was trying to get to sleep . Anyway she decided to dare her slightly younger cousin to get rid of it . A couple of days later when he was on his way back from the pub DNephew chucked it in the bin 😂. Peace was restored and the boy person annoyed by it was BIL . Neighbour wasn’t bothered so it was probably getting on his nerves too .

Familylimbo · 11/04/2026 21:45

I feel this way about people cutting their fucking grass as soon as it’s a little bright, every fucking day! As soon as one starts they’re all at it, then gets back round to the first one who done to do it again and it’s a whole summer thing!! Should be a specific grass cutting day where everyone does it!! Infuriating

The thing is. The type of people that hang them do not give a shit about others. They are morons. So I doubt a polite request to take them down would even register in their slurry brains.

I think you may be projecting there. That ridiculous, sweeping statement makes you sound like a moron.

ultracynic · 11/04/2026 01:03

I have big wind chimes hanging from a tree, they’re about a metre tall and have a very low chiming sound, not at all tinkly. I love them, and don’t care what my neighbours think as they let their dogs yap all the time.

And your neighbours probably think "I don't care if the dogs yap and annoy the neighbours - they're inconsiderate bastards anyway with their windchimes".

Personally I would ban them.

But that poster is correct. Anyone with an ounce of consideration for others wouldn't have windchimes. They actually cause me awful anxiety.

The dogs have been yapping for a lot longer than my lovely chimes, I feel no guilt.

They cause you awful anxiety. They don’t cause everyone anxiety. My neighbours like mine. If they disliked them, I’d remove them. Do I have windchimes and I am neither selfish, or a moron.

YayRain · 11/04/2026 23:30

StrikeForever · 11/04/2026 17:02

That must be so difficult for you. If a neighbour came to me like you did with your neighbour, I’d take mine down.

Depends on the neighbour. I would for one side. The other side, I'd buy another one to go with it.

I love wind chimes and didn't buy them because I am a considerate person and knew the neighbours might not like them. Then the neighbours showed they weren't considerate so I decided, oh well, I don't have to be either. So I got my always wanted wind chimes because they made me not care. If I knew they annoyed them, I'd shrug and not care one bit. They brought it on themselves.

That’s why I said if a neighbour approached me like the PP approached hers 😜

cadburyegg · 12/04/2026 00:43

YANBU they are awful.

Moved into my current house nearly 9 years ago, the first weekend I cut down the wind chimes in the garden because the noise drove me insane., our neighbour who we’d obviously only just met made a point of thanking me for getting rid of them!!

I now have two quite loud children and my neighbour now has 4 dogs but at least any noise they make is not CONSTANT.

Wind chimes are not constant. It's not windy all the time. Sometimes they are silent for days.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 11/04/2026 00:19

@StopUsingChatGPT Definitely metal! Incredibly clangy!! Perhaps it's just my age... 😆

No they are FAR too loud and a total noise pest. Absolutely shouldn't be allowed. Thier pleasure is your discomfort. Very inconsiderate

So you just have to be reliant on weather to get peace. Pretty unfair if it's a noise that winds you up.

Watcher1984 · 12/04/2026 01:05

Lol wind chimes annoying not even attached but another block up and clang clang every time there's a bit of wind I have to shut my bedroom window....however that's not the bane of my morning someone moved in next door and omg being woken to bounce, bounce of a football long before the lad leaves for school has started driving me nuts as it wakes the little ones and that's with the window shut and he can bounce that darn ball hundreds of times early each morning lol

Villanousvillans · 12/04/2026 01:07

AffableApple · 11/04/2026 00:30

It is relentless, selfish, infuriating, utterly pointless noise pollution. Anyone who has them up can go fuck themselves.

Why don’t you say what you really mean? 😉

My neighbours have a noise that is unpredictable and happens every day. That's the only reason I bought wind chimes after years of not doing so to be considerate. They aren't owed the consideration. If the wind chimes wind them up, bonus. That's not why I got them though. I got them because I wanted them, had for years, and they gave me no reason to not get them anymore.

We get it after school too. And three times on Saturday. This is why I finally felt okay about getting wind chimes. If they can do that, I can do wind chimes.
