Do I look overweight?

Do I look overweight? I’m the one in grey. I’ve had two kids and I think I might have let my weight run away with me, but as a typical woman I want to know if I’m being over critical? Please be honest

You look great! Photos always make people look bigger and you’re wearing light coloured clothes. But honestly you don’t look overweight to me.

you’re similar to me - I went from size 10 to a 12 after birth. I fluctuate depending on my energy levels. What I have found is that I look so much better in photos when I keep up with stretching and posture exercises (10 mins a day). Amazing what a straight back can do for you!

Edited

Hi @Overflowingwithcosmos - do you have a link or recommendation for the posture exercises please? 😊

My hunch is that the posters who say she looks overweight are overweight themselves trying to make her feel bad. Or they have a distorted ana concept of thin.

Overweight means higher than the healthy bmi for her height and there’s no way she’s out of the normal range.

I'm a fat fuck and I think she looks perfectly fine.

Yes you DO look overweight, but you carry it well.

I’m a size 8/10 UK don’t “look” overweight but my BMI is definitely overweight.

G5000 · 06/04/2026 09:30

I'm pretty sure most people saying she's super slim are themselves much larger than her. If you're a size 16, of course you don't want to say that a size 12 person is anything but skinny. Yes OP is certainly slimmer than an average British woman.
For me it looks like OPs waist to height ratio may put her in higher risk range according to NHS calculator.

Feel like I’ve stepped into a parallel universe.

I would never in a month of Sundays say you were even approaching overweight.

This. I've spent far too long staring at that photograph wondering if there's another person in grey which is the one OP means. But no.

OP you look slim, absolutely fine. Which I suspect you know. But it gives a a perfect chance for screwed-up MNers to come and post their skewed ideas of what is overweight, so well done you for starting what my be the most popular topic of the day!

I think people look ‘a different sort of nice’ at different weights/BMIs. I’ve known people who were curvy who lost a lot of weight, who looked very different after the weight loss, but I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘better’ - just different.
Personally, I have broad shoulders, and when I gain weight, I quickly look ‘burly’ which I dislike. For others, it may be the tum that enlarges, or the thighs…we’ll be our own harshest critics.
You may prefer the lighter ‘you’ to how you look now; but to the outside world, you look great. Don’t let it stop you enjoying life!

ZippyLimeBear · 06/04/2026 10:50

PinotPony · 05/04/2026 23:16

How old are you OP?

I’m reminded of a famous quote (was it Catherine O’Hara?) about looking back at photos when you’re older and realising that you were a thing of beauty.

I’m 52 now and realise that I had a great figure at 20, 30 and 40 but never appreciated it at the time. Trust me, when you’re 50, you’ll love the body you have now.

35!

If you're 5'5" or taller and size 12, you are unlikely to be top end of BMI.

If your 5' size 12 then you may be.

You look fine in the pic but if you're unhappy take up weight training. It'll tone you up and no need for fad dieting. Add in some aerobics (3*15mins a week) and you'll be back in a size 10 in a matter of weeks. Take it easy after this though cos you may not look so great at size 8 or 6...

I’m pretty tall, 5’9

Yes, you look overweight but not massively so.

Girlwithavibe · 06/04/2026 10:55

U may be bigger than your usual size !
That doesn't mean your overweight thou !
U look absolutely lovely and healthy
So I would say your being over critical of yourself !!
Please don't do this !!!

THisbackwithavengeance · 06/04/2026 11:00

Some of these comments!

No, you don’t look fat. You look normal. Not super slim but normal. Lose weight for aesthetic reasons if that’s what you want to do but no one in their right mind would look at you and say you’re fat. Except the Mumsnet teeny-tinies and pro anorexics who think everyone above a size 10 is obese.

JLou08 · 06/04/2026 11:02

No your don't look overweight. You look a healthy size with large breasts. Large breasts with a loose top can make someone look bigger than they actually are, I think that's why some people are commenting that you are overweight.

Aluna · 06/04/2026 11:25

Donotfitin · 06/04/2026 09:25

I’m a size 8/10 UK don’t “look” overweight but my BMI is definitely overweight.

8/10 in current vanity sizing is the old 10/12 so if you are petite I can see how that might be possible. Equally if you work out a lot and you have a lot of muscle. BMIs can’t measure muscle.

Firesidechatter · 06/04/2026 11:25

I think you look fine, I’d say high end of a healthy bmi If I’m being honest. But still a healthy weight.

Pyjamatimenow · 06/04/2026 11:37

why don’t you just weigh yourself? BMI works for most people.

Felinefoster · 06/04/2026 11:53

You look great!

DailyEnergyCrisis · 06/04/2026 11:57

Now you’ve updated height I would say not overweight. I previously said just over ideal bmi but given you’re 5 foot 9 I think you’re more likely to be in the middle of the healthy range. I’m shorter than you, size 10 bottom half and 12 top half and bmi 22 at 57kg and I reckon you’d be similar from a bmi point of view.

Donotfitin · 06/04/2026 11:59

Aluna · 06/04/2026 11:25

this is not vanity sizing as I still wear my clothes when I was 15., I’m turning 42 this year…. I also have a 67cm waist which is small regardless, but I’m still overweight

UltimateSloth · 06/04/2026 12:05

You look normal to me, but not 'slim' like some people are saying. I suspect that if you've always been slim up to now, then you might 'feel' overweight, even though you're not.

I'm a similar build and I feel big, but that's because I was always super-skinny and now I'm not.

TheChosenTwo · 06/04/2026 12:05

Before I saw your updates I’d have said you were at the upper end of a healthy bmi - a lovely shape and size. Now I know you’re pretty tall I reckon you’re in the middle of your bmi range.
But looks can be deceptive, I didn’t always ‘look’ especially heavy but I was, I’m tall and carried my weight quite evenly distributed across my body.
Weigh yourself if you’re wondering, or don’t if you’re happy as you are. Looks like you were all having a fun time!

PersephonePomegranate · 06/04/2026 12:06

You dont look overweight to an outsider. If you're asking the question, you're obviously not happy though - which is more important than a random person telling you that you don't look overweight.

TheBlueKoala · 06/04/2026 12:08

ZippyLimeBear · 05/04/2026 19:40

I think I’m the top end of normal, good spot! But I’ve been a size 10 my whole life but now wear a size 12, prob need to do something about it if it bothers me. I really appreciate the honest but kind replies

I think you look like a 15 year old. Not at all overweight. Healthy mid range bmi.
