Panorama - is the XL Bully Ban working

Discussion thread.

Personally I can’t understand why they weren’t all just rounded up and destroyed - all of the exemption nonsense just muddied the water.

I do also agree though that there is a problem of ownership; no one should be allowed to have these dogs but there needs to be tighter controls on dog ownership in general.

I would like to see:

  • A full ban of any bully type breed
  • A maximum weight restriction for any domestic dog
  • Restrictions on which dogs can be domestic pets and which are for work only e.g., Rottweiler only for police dog handlers
  • Restrictions on size of dog you can own based on the size of your property
  • A mandatory training course for new dog owners
  • A return to licensing with a points based system for infringements

And obviously, the funding to make sure the above happens! We are apparently currently spending millions rounding up and housing all these XL Bullies, we have the money.

Dogs get blockages when they gobble down their food as a result of being fed only once a day. There are ways to avoid these blockages and three in a year is a joke really. How many times a year do regular people have their dogs insides cut open? My dog would eat any old shit off the ground if I let him, but I don’t. I also feed him twice a day with a slow feeder so he eats more slowly. I’ve never had to have my dog cut open for eating random shit.

Big dogs are prone to bloat. You can minimise the risk through a few things but you can't eliminate it..besides I think.he feeds his adult dogs 2x per day. Not 100% sure.

My.neighbours anatolian eats every 2-3 days by choice. Funny buggers mastiffs.

He bred one once. I think the others are neutered now. You have to wait until they are grown.

These silly rumours are what has the police around his every week. He shows the dogs with young kids. You're reading the comments and not watching the videos.

One is literally in heat right now 🙄

I’m seeing dogs running off the leash. Attacking each other. Having multiple preventable surgeries. I’m not seeing any of that in comments. And this is all over the country, not just this guy.

It isnt always preventable. Big dogs are prone to bloat and similar abdominal issues. Dogs sometimes scold each other. Dogs are allowed off the lead.

You sure? Pretty sure he neutered the only girl.

That depends if kids are there..otherwise an assault course is fine for a dog. They need exercise.

Oh don’t be ridiculous - him being there with the dog will stop any child from being able to access it when they show up and that thing is there. It is a space for CHILDREN.

Why on earth do those dogs have clipped ears? I thought we had stopped doing that.

Clearly this man loves his very large, and to my eyes, ugly, mutts, but I wouldn’t want to meet them when out with my (very docile, trained) lab.

It’s the mentality of the owners that’s the problem here. Because if they addressed their tiny dick issues they wouldn’t need hellhound henchmen.

Oh she's just having her 2nd heat. Too young to neuter anyway. He's not breeding her though.

Theunamedcat · 01/04/2026 08:28

It's a clear issue that needs more critical thinking thrown at it because blanket bans are just not going to work

My question is if most of the dogs that snap can be traced back to one particular dog why not destroy his breeding line as a start? Enforcement of female sterilisation for dog owners who have a tendency to breed dogs (friends of mine are on there 5th accidental litter ffs 🙄 not bully breed but still) vets should be encouraged to run programs for spay and neuter cats and dogs where you pay in bit by bit weekly then get the procedure done and other people can donate if they like because in amongst the "accidental on purpose" litters are some genuine accidents backyard breeders are still going (in my neighbours backyard AGAIN) and no-one will do anything about it

Imports.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 01/04/2026 08:28

@BeMellowAquaSquid Higher incidence of biting because most of those dogs are popular. A dog like a Dandy Dinmont won’t be in the list!

As a nation we have too many dogs owned by inappropriate owners. We need to eradicate the sub culture of attack dog owners. We know who they are.

He usually walks his dogs very early in the morning. Honestly these excuses are silly. Big dogs scare you. OK. Don't get one.

TheGoldenOwl · 01/04/2026 08:32

GlovedhandsCecilia · 01/04/2026 08:15

You could mimic distraction in test conditions easily. Plus, most of the problematic dogs I see are trained in any circumstances. Their owners can never recall them.

Ok cool. And what happens to dogs that fail? They're destroyed? How long do they get to pass this test? Six months? A year? Two?

My friend has a whippet. Lives in the countryside, Prey drive is off the charts. She's not off lead, ever. Only in paid for dog paddocks for a good run with other lurcher friends a couple of times a week.

You load one of her triggers (prey) and ask her to recall off of it in this test centre and she would fail. This is why she is on lead where this might happen. So after you have set her up for deliberate failure, Does she get destroyed? Even though her owner manages her daily environment appropriately with a lead and knows the dog's limits?

Big dogs like XLs and Mastiffs are DANGEROUS, that’s the whole point of the thread. Nobody needs a killing machine as a pet and it will never be okay for a person to intimidate children in a place that is designed for them in the name of their dog having exercise - take it to a dog facility.

Not destroyed and it would depend on what type of behaviours the dog displays. I think you should mainly need this to let your dog off the lead in public

Does it really matter if a few dogs are destroyed? Over time we might see breeding of better behaved dogs as only the good ones are kept. This is how dogs have been bred for centuries - for desirable characteristics. I would argue that not biting or attacking people is pretty desirable!

Any dog can be dangerous. Bans are arbitrary. Neopolitan mastiffs are banned in some countries but other breeds of mastiff are not. There is one country I believe that has banned the neopolitan, but not the Argentinian.

Mastiffs don't show aggression and prey drive at equal levels. A boerbel is different to an English mastiff.

None of that will happen OP. There was a Facebook past not long ago about vet fees and the VAST majority of replying dog owners want a pet NHS where everyone, even non pet owners, are taxed to pay for their choices treatment, unfortunately we live in the time of the fur baby 🤮🤮 where dogs are treated as another human family member

Think that look may be rooted in dog fighting and taken up by the stupid toake their dog look hard as nails.
I remember being called an arsehole for moving upstairs on a bus.
My crime was not wanting my face level with a mutant dogs which the junkie owner deemed it needed a seat.

The idea of a pet NHS is just ridiculous - we can’t even run our human NHS properly!

Sounds like a real vote winner. I’m sure any party putting forward such policies would romp home, especially among the 41% of households that own dogs.
