Was my request reasonable or was he right to storm off?

I just don’t know if I am the problem. In a nutshell we bought raw bacon to put in nets to fish for crabs. DH was putting the raw bacon in while dd 3 was watching.

Affer he filled the net and put it in the water so dd could hold it, I asked him if he would go into the pub opposite to wash his hands.

He got really cross and stormed off muttering. There’s lots of moments like this and I just wonder if it’s me?! I don’t think it is but I would welcome other perspectives as he clearly thinks I’m unreasonable. For context I work full time as does DH but I am fully responsible for dd in the week due to the hours he works. I therefore try to avoid unnecessary risk of illness as there’s already lots of time off I have to take for sickness bugs etc and I thought it was a small thing to do to wash hands to be safe. AIBU?

It's still covered in bacteria.

Lol not like everything else then.

Are you happy OP?
It sounds like a very stressful set up.
Washing your hands after touching raw meat is so bloody basic.
He sounds like a petulant man child.

So again how often should he have washed his hands whilst doing a job where they would be dirty continuously?

I’m sure you would be ‘petulant’ if your partner was treating you like that.

SisterMaryImmaculate · 30/03/2026 20:04

Bacon’s the least of your worries…it’s the turds in the sea you want to worry about.

Seriously, crabbing is a bit of a mucky activity anyway- like lots of fun things kids enjoy doing. If you’re regularly so uptight about hygiene, perhaps DH feels you suck the joy out of other fun activities too?
Maybe a little bottle of hand sanitiser is a reasonable compromise?

I hope he stormed off sideways 🦀 🦀 🦀

I love this.
@Unsurree of course you were unreasonable. Your husband is an adult , you were ordering him around like he’s an infant.
Last time I tried to use a pub toilet (with potty training toddlers before I’d bought a drink) I was publicly shouted at and felt humiliated.
lots of pub owners react this way, i wouldn’t have dreamed of just popping in to wash my hands after crabbing , especially if someone else told me to do it

If DH was fishing for crabs it's likely that his hands were in contact with lots of other "not very clean" things. As long as he wasn't planning to lick his hands or eat, it would surely make sense to wash hands when finished?

This, tbh. Generally speaking, I'd completely support the idea that you should always wash your hands after touching uncooked meat and would happily extend this to bacon.

But in context of hands in the (very dirty!) sea I think this was a bit like insisting on sterilised crockery while eating off filthy cutlery!

His rudeness and unpleasantness sit at the top of the food chain of wrongs for me, though. Can't bear angry, sulky people.

You told your husband to go & wash his hands like he was a 3yr old child…

I mean unless that is his actual level of capacity, no wonder he huffed and puffed. Is it like this all the time?

I assume from this that you have never been crabbing.

😂😂
Children of the 70s and 80s …. How on earth are we still alive? 🤷🏼‍♀️😬

90s children also survived clambering around for rock pools, picking up all sorts, paddling/swimming in the sea and then having a beach BBQ without sanitiser or a pub to wash our hands.

Satarn · 30/03/2026 20:24

Id have went to the pub like you asked, and had a pint maybe 2.

3isthemagicnumber3 · 30/03/2026 20:40

Oh god you sound like a pain in the arse, I think your husband is old enough to decide if and when he wants to wash his hands. A bit of bacon on his hands whilst undertaking a pursuit whereby he would be handling sea creatures, isn’t going to kill anyone.

Dymaxion · 30/03/2026 20:53

Over the many, many years we have been crabbing, we have never washed hands until finished and packed away, baby wipes are handed out, if using tinned fish in oil, which is our preferred bait ( the crabs love it too ) just because its so messy.
Nobody has ever been sick on holiday, despite our apparently very lax hand hygiene.

Any pub round here, you would have to buy something to use the toilets. Might as well enjoy your purchase.

Hoolieghoul · 30/03/2026 16:15

He called OP over the top and crazy then stormed off muttering, but it's OP who's hard work...?

Well he's probably had to deal with being treated like a child and told what to do over and over again. I would have stormed off myself in those circumstances. People who obsess over hygiene are annoying, and yes, hard work.

A 3-y-o is more likely to get ill from whatever's in the sea water than from supermarket bacon.

Is it cleaner and safer being from a supermarket? I guess that's why it's Super? 😊

Bacon isn’t exactly raw meat.

However if you’d said it was raw chicken I’d agree with you.

"It is safe to touch raw bacon, provided you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately afterward to avoid spreading bacteria like
Salmonella or Listeria. Raw bacon is uncooked, cured pork and can harbour harmful bacteria or parasites, so it should never be eaten raw, but handling it is safe with proper hygiene."

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/03/2026 22:09

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 30/03/2026 19:21

So how often would he need to wash his hands to be acceptable?

And how many times should you wash after touching a crab?
Context is so important. This wasn't food preparation. Crabbing kit and the harbour are far more likely to be contaminated than a few bacon bits.

sittingonabeach · 30/03/2026 22:21

@Mumtobabyhavoc you still haven’t said how many times you would wash your hands

Should you wash your hands after touching raw bacon?

wash hands in warm, soapy water after touching raw food (such as meat, poultry, fish and eggs) and before handling ready-to-eat foods (such as salad vegetables) keep raw meat/poultry/fish as well as unwashed raw fruit and vegetables separate to ready-to-eat foods during storage and preparation.

As needed.

You can't separate the bacon from the crabs here.
