To take up a bigger table than needed in a cafe?

To try to use a bigger table in a cafe?

I know it’s not always possible, such as during busy times, and I would never ‘hog’ a larger table for myself.

But during quiet times… such as right now! I’m in a cafe on my own with 2 dogs and I’ve sat myself at a 4 seater table.

I actually hate 2 seater ones. They are just too small and I get claustrophobic with all the clutter of cutlery, condiments, sides of veg etc.

I like to spread out!

Yes maybe in my area 🤗

But the ones in your area allegedly stopped having dogs in the cafe because of your input? This isn’t the case with these ones.

We are discussing people in cafes with dogs, on a chat forum.

And you are talking about people you’ve previously judged. Keep up.

A pp said 'You probably have Gloria to thank for that'. So I responded to that. I was being light hearted, I obviously do not think I'm responsible for all bannings, just some!

I haven't called anyone friendless, unreasonable or selfish. I've said it is inconsiderate and selfish behaviour to force dogs on other people in small confines like cafes. So many people have allergies, phobias or just don't like dogs.

I said 'some dog owners maybe don't have friends so their pet goes everywhere with them'. Some not all. If someone is taking several dogs everywhere with them and hogging tables for 4 when they are the only person present it does make you wonder.

If I demonstrate in your opinion selfish behaviour, does that not mean you think I’m selfish?

Why would you assume any dog owners don’t have friends because they do something you don’t like.

Stop wriggling.

At least own your insults!

Does it really matter if Gloria is on a one woman mission to stop dogs going into cafes? You're all so adamant that there's no reason for the cafés to stop allowing dogs, it's hardly a concern.

I admire Gloria for speaking out when many of us dont. I simply won't go to places that allow dogs, so I vote with my money. You get to do the same. I also understand you have a different opinion than me, and thats fine. Maybe you can understand people have different opinions than you.

Fuck me.

I am asking if you always judge people when out and about or do you sometimes mind your own business. Whether you discuss it at a later date in a chat forum is irrelevant.

As a responsible dog owner I get so tired of how some give others a bad name. This taking dogs everywhere including cafes where they know others don't like it is fairly recent thing that needs to stop.

Yes, I do understand that. I’m perfectly happy taking my dog places he’s allowed. I’m equally as happy not going to places he isn’t welcome. It’s Gloria that’s throwing around her opinions as if they’re facts.

Gloria is entitled of course to her views, but once she starts insulting people that dare to think differently to her, she’s going to get the same back. So I’m not sure why you’re questioning me about not allowing people to have a different opinion? Probably because you agree with Gloria’s opinion?

She seems to think that her opinion is the only one allowed, that she’s an authority that should be adhered too because she says so. She’s not the font of all knowledge in dogs/cafes etc.

She’s well over stepped the mark, much more than opinion has been given.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 02/04/2026 10:54

Sit where you want when it’s quiet 🤷‍♀️ Are you asking for permission? However, don’t do another thread getting all annoyed when someone (like me) comes and joins you when there’s nowhere else to sit. I’ve done that loads of times with absolutely no shame whatsoever. Most people ignore you, some glare but I don’t care. Why should I stand when there’s room at a table, they don’t own it.

Describing irresponsible, inconsiderate behaviour of fellow dog owners is not insulting anyone. It is factual observation. The inconvenient truth yes and I've clearly hit a nerve but the fact is as dog owners we should consider other people's feelings not just barge about dog in tow thinking 'up yours' if folk don't like sitting on dog haired covered cafe chairs, or stepping over them to get served.

Onleemoi · 02/04/2026 11:42

So if you’re not barging, thinking up yours, letting your dog sit on a chair or allowing them to get in people’s way there’s no issue.

I live in a very touristy area.

After covid, it got to the point that it was almost impossible to find a café or restaurant that didn't accept dogs in our area.

People did complain and over the last few years, a lot of places have either stopped allowing dogs at all, or restrict them to a small area, or outside.

There were a few howls of outrage and predictions of doom at first when dogs were banned/restricted, but it settled down very quickly and the cafés and restaurants that don't allow, or limit dogs are doing very well.

One of the things I have noticed is even dog owners prefer a dog-free environment when they go out without their animals.

I certainly don’t prefer a dog free environment. I’ll choose a dog friendly cafe over a dog free one most of the time when I’m out without my dog.

TenuousTed · 02/04/2026 11:50

And I had several people approach my small dog to fuss over him in Costa the other day, so clearly not everyone lives in horror of dogs.

KimberleyClark · 02/04/2026 12:05

Where I live, in walking distance there is

Traditional pub, dogs welcome in bar (water, bowls and treats supplied) but not in lounge area
Brewhouse pub, more of a continental style bar really, dogs allowed.
Italian cafe/pizza place, dogs not allowed
Greek restaurant - dogs not allowed
Small coffee place next to park - dogs allowed. In an area where 75% of people walking past have a dog with them that’s a bit of a no brainer.

So pretty even dog friendly/not dog friendly provision.

XenoBitch · 02/04/2026 14:01

I really do not see how it is " irresponsible, inconsiderate" to take a dog into a cafe that has a sticker on the window say it is dog friendly, and the cafe owner comes over with a treat for your dog and asks what their name is.
Because that makes no sense to me.

Egit · 02/04/2026 16:28

Gloriia · 02/04/2026 08:25

I've already explained a few times, dogs running for 15km while you bike isn't good for them. If you were 'stopping, assessing and admiring the view' all the time you'd be better off walking. As would they. Dogs like to investigate, not run constantly.

Many, not just me, have agreed that dogs should not be in cafes. Why on earth take them to places where everyone there will be thinking 'fgs!'?

Walk your dogs, play with them then tuck them up at home while you go to a cafe.

Obviously you won't but if you start a thread to canvas opinions then you'll get them and yes hogging a table for 4 when you're alone and there's smaller tables would seem inconsiderate even if the condiments and cutlery do overwhelm you a bit.

Not ALL dogs like that. My dogs also enjoy running, and running fast! Plus i enjoy mnt biking so why would i just go for a walk instead? Would it have been better for them to stay at home?… Actually, don’t answer that as I already know your answer!… Should all dogs have blonde hair and blue eyes too?

Why are you telling me how to enjoy my exercise time with my dogs? How do you know what my dogs prefer?

There is more than one way to enjoy and exercise a dog.

Make you wonder what?… That I have no friends? Because I spent a week day off work riding my bike, exercising my dog and sitting in a cafe? Have you never done anything alone?

This wouldn’t bother me… maybe I’d make a friend! It seems I’m lacking them

No, what @Gloriia can’t seem to understand is that’s it’s okay for BOTH to exist, and for cafe goers to have a choice.

Well, as has been said throughout just because they are allowed does not make it ok.

Many owners seem to have gone along with it, without any thought for other customers whom don't like dogs in cafes and as I and other posters have said unfortunately we need to complain to highlight how inappropriate this is so the staff to change it.

We have a lovely garden centre nearby with outdoor areas that dogs can sit next to their owners without bothering anyone.

We've even had an owner here with a doberman who takes it out with her when she fancies coffee and cake! Surely you can see a small indoor area is not an appropriate place to take a massive dog?

Onleemoi · 02/04/2026 17:13

But it does make it ok doesn’t it? Because it’s allowed. Being allowed to do something is the very definition of it being ok to do that thing.

This is excruciating.
