To take up a bigger table than needed in a cafe?

To try to use a bigger table in a cafe?

I know it’s not always possible, such as during busy times, and I would never ‘hog’ a larger table for myself.

But during quiet times… such as right now! I’m in a cafe on my own with 2 dogs and I’ve sat myself at a 4 seater table.

I actually hate 2 seater ones. They are just too small and I get claustrophobic with all the clutter of cutlery, condiments, sides of veg etc.

I like to spread out!

Kids run from their table to the designated play area. I’ve seen it plenty of times. A bored dog having kids running past them. Recipe for disaster. Much better to have the dog inside where permitted.

And my dog never poos or wees in doors, but does out doors, not good in a pub garden!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/04/2026 09:57

Absolutely not unreasonable if it's quiet. I would do the same, and with my dog (horrors of horrors!!). People on here are bonkers.

Yes small dogs do that more I think! Love dachshunds!

So do I! This one was really cute and friendly.

When my Doberman was a pup, we went into pets at home, a little girl looked at her and said “mummy hasn’t that sausage dog got long legs” 🤣

Their facial features are so alike!

I know. I just couldn’t think of another word to describe it and figured people on here would be smart enough to understand what i meant

Smart enough to understand nonsense. 😂. Got it.

'I also can’t believe you think taking a fit active dog out for 15km is irresponsible'

I said having a dog running 15km while you bike is not nice for the dog. Yes they'll keep up but dogs like to sniff and take their time.

I often see a bloke biking with his poor dog sprinting along side on a long lead <which of course isnt dangerous at all entanglement and trip risk wise>, yes they can do it, as said previously some folk do enjoy dog racing but it is kinder to let them explore and take their time. Nicer for their joints too.

But that’s why I did it. Because I don’t like a cluttered table, such as the day before.

I understand that, but the same table (or same size of table) wouldn't have been as cluttered as it was the day before when there were two of you with double the amount of crockery, etc.

Again, I don't think YABU if the cafe is empty, but it's basic logic that two people take up more room than one, especially if they are both eating.

Onleemoi · 01/04/2026 12:53

You do realise that dogs (and cafes) are not one size fits all @Gloriia ? Walks too come to that, some are energetic, some less so, some end with a cafe visit and some with a takeaway coffee.

It is funny that she thinks she is on a one woman mission to ban dogs from cafes... one at a time.

A new cafe opened up near my DM's recently and it is very dog friendly. The owner can't have dogs in his rental flat, so gets his dog fix in work. There are a few dog items on the menu too, and the cafe is close to a field popular with dog walkers. They make up a lot of his trade.

If PP went in there and stamped her feet about dogs, I imagine she would be told where to go.

I know. None of the places my dog and I visit would take a blind bit of notice. I also wouldn’t dream of going to a place he isn’t allowed and demanding to be let in. Or tell others what was right or wrong for their dog or imply people were unable to make friends because they took their dog places. Self proclaimed nice guy too!

Ah but she’s got a 100% success rate….

The buys a takeaway coffee 🤦‍♀️

Self praise is not recommendation!

Im not sure she’s going to have a nationwide success..

We buy a takeaway when we're out with dogs and go in when with friends and family. Without dogs.

Surely this is not too difficult a concept for you?

What's funny about it. As we've seen on this thread lots of people don't like dogs in cafes. We're all a bit too polite though.

The more people that complain the more this fad for allowing dogs everywhere will end.

It's a good thing to share positive experiences. To tell a manager those dogs should not be on the seats and to see them tell the owners to shift them then to actually decide dogs are not allowed is a good thing.

It'll empower folk to take a stand!

Friends? Not like is that go into cafes with our dogs, that you decide are friendless?

based on the 450 on the parliamentary petition, I wouldn’t hold your breath for a lot of success!

I also explained that they did get to do this. They always get to sniff and explore! Even when I’m on my bike. Mountain biking involves lots of stopping, assessing routes, chatting, admiring the view. It’s not consistent riding. I have already explained this, yet you seem to bring it up again.

Some people apparently don't realise that responsible dog ownership takes nearly as many forms as there are dog owners.
I cringe at some of the things I see in public but it's not my place to dictate to others how they treat their dog, as long as it's not actually being abused.

I agree, we all do things differently but yes when someone is doing something not in the dog's best interests as an animal lover I can't stay silent, particularly on a chat forum when someone is actually canvassing opinions.

I wouldn't rudely approach an owner in cafe and ask them to get their dogs off customer's seats I'd ask politely and if they refused I'd then get the staff to do something.

Yeah i don't think it's a parliamentary issue at all. It can all be handled locally.

Onleemoi · 01/04/2026 18:49

That’s handy isn’t it? Seeing as no one cared enough to even sign a petition.

of course it isn’t, because it’s not important!

But that also means the country won’t benefit from your ability to change the rules? I mean everyone else moans that all cafes are dog friendly, but you’ve the ability to change that apparently?

Maybe online courses to assist people!

YeaVerily · 01/04/2026 19:19

In fairness, very few people would have known about it. I didn't and I would have signed it as would many people I know, and people on here.

If it were to be given national coverage and the public were made aware of it then it might be a different story. We'll never know until it happens. Unless someone makes an aibu about it.

On the other hand, probably not enough of a cross section of people here.
