So pissed off. Great neighbours moving because of weed smell *

We have some fantastic neighbours. The family have been there a couple of years now.

Just found out they're moving because the smell of skunk is so strong from their adjoining neighbour. We're terraced. We can smell it in ours so can imagine how bad it is there. It's stronger in the loft. I'm thinking they're growing?
They both rent and we own. I'm dreading who we get next as we've had some horrors in there. I want to move but to get somewhere hopefully quiet/decent will be expensive.

I hope they'll be happy where they go but am gutted. It's so unfair.

Sorry. Old South East Londoner here. Grassing is generally considered bad form by most decent people.

For a moment I thought you neighbours has a pet skunk! Sorry I know that is not helpful but it made me laugh.

I would be annoyed cant you report them ?

That's what I thought!🤭

MinecraftMum40 · 04/04/2026 23:56

I don’t blame them tbh. One of my neighbours is clearly smoking/gowing cannabis too but I can’t work out which ones it is-I have a row of houses close to the back and neighbours to the side. Adjacent neighbours are elderly and the next few down I can’t see it being them either but the smell is so strong mostly at night, it’s like they’re in my garden smoking it. It’s awful.

Do you know if skunk neighbours have any children living there? if so report to the relevant authorities. Also trace landlord details it’s easy to do via land register send them anonymous letter.

I've reported to the council and our councillor said he's dealing with it. We're moving asap.

Well I've found a house within budget. 3 beds conservatory semi detached. Next to a woodland. Hoping to view over the weekend 🙏

Hopefully there’s no real wild skunks living in the woods!🤣

I agree. Bromley person here, originally from Sydenham.

I used the term earlier and was asked if I lived in Albert Square :-). However 'grassing' is a term that has been used forever, I can remember it from my teens and I am 76! I went to a boarding school for a while and we used the word 'grass' there for people who would 'tell tales' on fellow pupils and get them into trouble.

The op has 'reported' to her local councillor but i doubt very much anything will come of it.

I do wonder if the smell is as bad as she thinks.

I have a first floor flat in a small over-60s block; it's very safe, nobody can get in without being 'buzzed\ in, all the common parts are regularly cleaned (including the 'bin' room downstairs), the garden is well maintained and we have a concierge Mon-Fri during the day,

In the evening if I leave my flat and walk along the corridor to the stairs or lift I occasionally get a whiff of weed. It doesn't bother me in the least. My son said he has noticed it here occasionally when he's visited but, "Old people use weed for aches and pains"'. Also we are the generation who lived the swinging sixties, on the whole we live and let live :-).

RoyalImpatience · 06/04/2026 13:41

Yes I also thought a pet skunk.

Op I would just move.

SonsRfab · 06/04/2026 13:54

LBFseBrom my sense of smell is fine thanks. It's coming through 2 houses.

I may inform environmental health?

Won't be my problem soon anyway. And neighbour is definitely moving. His racism helped nail that.

On the bright side, it’s got you viewing places in your ideal location. Just keep viewing and viewing. Even the crap places teach you something about what you will and won’t compromise on. The more bad places you look at, the more sure you will be when you do finally find the right ones

Yes it's made us realise we can't stay here forever. Luckily we have the cash so the move should be quicker.

Blimey, I would hate to live cheek by jowl with racists, they never seem to be able to keep it to themselves and pontificate expecting everyone to agree with them! That would make me depressed and want to move.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/04/2026 18:33

How things change over the years...so now we have white racist weed smokers telling people (of unknown origin) to go back to their country.

When back in my day - when we knew the grasses from the 'grass' - it would be the white racists telling the weed/grass smokers (of unknown origin) to leave.

The op didn't specify the race of the racists or the pot smokers, unless I missed something.

Before I moved to my current flat (I downsized two years ago), I lived in a semi detached house with garden back and front and could not smell anything from either side except barbecue in good weather. I once got a whiff of pot but that was when I was at the bottom of my garden - and it was thirty odd years ago! Nothing came through the walls, even on the adjoined side.

There were no racists that I knew amongst my neighbours, of any ethnicity. Where we had previously lived, as first time buyers, it was dreadful, quite a hostile area. The National Front regularly marched. I don't think it's so bad there now, it's more mixed and relaxed.

TheHateIsNotGood · 06/04/2026 19:18

@LBF I assumed the weed smoking racists were white as they told OP to go back to where she came from. I'm aware racism isn't just something white people do - in fact OP could be white English and dared to venture north to Scotland - but generally on MN, most racists are white.

I just said to dh about the growing. He said it'd be there all the time if they were. Good point. Why is it so strong it goes through to ours? There are walls between us ffs?

Apparently it’s not there all the time if they’re growing - only when they change the filters or whatever on the extraction system.

we think we have a grow house near us, when we can work out which house it is, we’ll call it in.

Oh dear, I hate that sort of shit. Knuckle dragging morons. The weed smell is bad enough. What must the nice neighbour think of us all?

There is 1 flag up in the next street and it makes me feel ashamed to see it there.

I hope you and nice neighbour find your new homes are lovely places. Rooting for you!
