So pissed off. Great neighbours moving because of weed smell *

We have some fantastic neighbours. The family have been there a couple of years now.

Just found out they're moving because the smell of skunk is so strong from their adjoining neighbour. We're terraced. We can smell it in ours so can imagine how bad it is there. It's stronger in the loft. I'm thinking they're growing?
They both rent and we own. I'm dreading who we get next as we've had some horrors in there. I want to move but to get somewhere hopefully quiet/decent will be expensive.

I hope they'll be happy where they go but am gutted. It's so unfair.

I cried when my lovely neighbours moved. YANBU bad neighbours are life destroying. I hope you get some nice ones x

The OP should have ignored her husband months or even years ago and told the police there was a suspected drugs farm a couple of doors away.

Or maybe the husband (and the OP?) are customers?

u3ername · 30/03/2026 12:45

Moving house is so expensive. Why should op move. She needs to complain, report, complain, report until the problem is solved.
If we just run away soon there will be no nice places left because the idiots are left to do as they wish undisturbed.

Lairymary · 30/03/2026 12:45

Well if they are growing AND renting then I would bet the owners would want to know, whether it's private or council.

gillefc82 · 30/03/2026 12:55

If they are growing to any kind of scale, they are also likely to be illegally extracting energy as running hydroponics is expensive. Make an anonymous report:

There's been lots growing locally. Some huge ones too. But like dh just said it'd be there constantly. But it's so strong?

The plants won't smell strong when young, so there could well be periods of little to no smell depending on if they have a constant grow at varying stages or are growing in batches that are all maturing at once

SonsRfab · 30/03/2026 13:00

No I doubt they're growing. Dh is probably right.

I'll message our councillor. Although no doubt he's inundated with complaints about the same or similar issues.

If they’re growing they’ll have set up dodgy electrics to bypass the mains. Massive massive fire risk

Oh right that's interesting.

Hey OP, we actually had skunk farmers next to us and we had no idea because we didn't share an air brick. The guy next door on the other hand was going mental to get the police interested. They moved out just as the pandemic hit and plod broke the door down two weeks later and that was only because they'd stopped paying rent and the owner was going mental. We could hear their sergeant going absolutely mental at them over the ring doorbell.

Contact your local councillor with your concerns, the council's ASB and neighborhoods team. Make as much noise as possible and try and get some cut through with police. Solidarity, it's absolutely disgusting stuff.

Has anyone got anywhere reporting the stink from cannabis? My DM has a newish neighbour who sits out in his garden at all hours smoking it and playing music. They’ve both got large gardens and their houses are a little way apart but the neighbour has created a covered outdoor man cave and the stink in my DM’s garden is rank. It also drifts in through the windows and stinks her house out. He seems an ok chap based on the limited conversation I’ve had with him so I’m going to try taking to him first, but given the trouble and expense he’s gone to creating his little smelly drug den I doubt he’ll be too receptive to giving up his cannabis. My poor DM had to resort to keeping her windows closed and staying inside to try to avoid it and that’s really pissing me off. I think the police would be interested in a grow site but I wonder if they/the council would bother to get involved in that level of nuisance?

Mumandcarer80 · 30/03/2026 13:13

I would be reporting them. There has been a few house fires last few years local to me caused by cannabis farms. The fire spreads unbelievably fast. 1 in a vacant shop spread to multiple houses people had to be evacuated and either stay with family or live in temporary accommodation.

RS1987 · 30/03/2026 13:16

Oh I thought you were talking about the animal too. Like of course skunks grow?

gmgnts · 30/03/2026 13:17

It's just finding somewhere within budget as we'd have to be cash buyers. We won't get a mortgage or would want one.
We've just taken on a mortgage in our 70s. It is possible to find lenders if you go to a specialist broker. It has meant we can live in the house we really want in the area we love and it's cheaper than paying rent.

SonsRfab · 30/03/2026 12:23

I just said to dh about the growing. He said it'd be there all the time if they were. Good point. Why is it so strong it goes through to ours? There are walls between us ffs?

Not necessarily, I also live in a terrace and the house joining me was a cannabis farm.

I could hear movement at night (thin walls) and could smell it struggle at some points of the day but not at others. Police didn’t seem to care when I reported it until about six month later when a load of masked men kicked the doors in and filled a large white van up with plants, it stunk 24/7 once the plants were all disturbed but until that happened, my dh and other people told me it can’t be a farm because I’d smell it all the time. It was a farm!

This thread has clarified to me why drugs shouldn't be legal - the whole country would bloody stink of weed. It's bad enough as it is!

SonsRfab · 30/03/2026 13:28

I've messaged the local councillor.

Oh you mean that skunk not Pepe Le Pew (although both skunks pew).

It’s always a worry when good neighbours leave. I’m sick of the smell permeating everywhere 🤢

My thoughts too. It’s getting really bad as it has such a strong smell nowadays. The idea that it could be stinking everywhere legally, horrifies me.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 30/03/2026 13:35

When it snows, does snow settle on their roof? If no then they’re probably growing.

I'll check if we get any. Also birds tend to go on warm roofs. I'll have a look.

Not the point of the post but if they are growing the smell wouldn’t necessarily be there constantly as lights and fans are on timers and if set incorrectly would make the smell more intense at certain points of the day!

amyds2104 · 30/03/2026 13:40

Also when in “flower” the smell gets stronger too.

SonsRfab · 30/03/2026 13:41

@amyds2104 thanks. How do you know so much?

Please don’t think this. I mean, I don’t blame you because so many people who use it are so antisocial and don’t consider their neighbours, but if you use it medically (I do), it comes as an oil or you’re supposed to use a medical-grade vaporizer. No one should be smelling it except the person using it. But like everything in life, the people who break the rules are most visible, and of course, people hate the action as a result. I wouldn’t want my house to smell like it!

Unfortunately, legalization IS coming - it’s a multi-billion pound business, and the government has “soft launched” by making it medically available to almost everyone who wants it (medical conditions that qualify include everything from IBS to anxiety and something like 250 conditions in between, it’s less expensive than buying illegally, and you know the exact provenance of your medication, so no more county lines for marijuana at least). But before legalization, I think we need much, MUCH stronger prosecution for anti-social behavior, and that needs to include smells. So, now is the ideal time to lobby for that.

Has anybody dropped an anonymous "hint" to the police?

ie we believe there's a drug factory at [your neighbour's neighbour's house]

I believe there are anonymous crimestopper whistleblowing lines

People do not grass up neighbours except for violence for goodness sakes.
Live and let live.

If the smell is really that bad, a word in their ear might be enough to send them out to the garden to smoke.
