So pissed off. Great neighbours moving because of weed smell *

We have some fantastic neighbours. The family have been there a couple of years now.

Just found out they're moving because the smell of skunk is so strong from their adjoining neighbour. We're terraced. We can smell it in ours so can imagine how bad it is there. It's stronger in the loft. I'm thinking they're growing?
They both rent and we own. I'm dreading who we get next as we've had some horrors in there. I want to move but to get somewhere hopefully quiet/decent will be expensive.

I hope they'll be happy where they go but am gutted. It's so unfair.

Well you can't hear the neighbours in a detached house.

And I don’t hear mine in my terraced house. We are considerate.

NewYorkie39 · 31/03/2026 17:55

We are a terrace of owned houses and one of the 4 rented houses behind us is constantly on the weed. The smell is extremely strong from the top floor, not like the stuff we used 40 years ago. There is a new baby next door and I do worry about the effect it could have, but I'm not the parent. We are all annoyed, but the tenants concerned are Eastern European and, shall we say, on the aggressive side (probably the skunk!), and we are more worried about their reaction if we complained to them or their landlord. I don't know the answer. What a crap country this is becoming, when we fear complaining about an illegal activity.

SonsRfab · 30/03/2026 19:28

This gets better. Just been messaging neighbour (nice one) and apparently when she complained about weed he said she should go back to her own country and shouted at her. She's leaving because she doesn't feel safe. She's not from the UK. She's a single parent. Been working and studying to better herself.

I've been in tears. She said she is so grateful to us for being good neighbours.

It's war now. I'm fucking fuming.

You may get really nice new neighbours, SonsRfab, people or a person not bothered by a bit of pot smoking. Then peace will reign.

keepswimming38 · 31/03/2026 17:57

Oh I thought you meant an animal. Do you mean they are smoking weed? Sorry I don’t inhabit this world of drug use and am not up to date with the lingo!

Yes, skunk is apparently a particularly pungent type of weed.
I generally quite like a waft of weed if the wind blows it my way but I don't think I'd recognise skunk.

Emeraldforest · 31/03/2026 19:08

That's horrible! I'd prefer an actual skunk by a long way. Report, surely?

LBFseBrom · 31/03/2026 22:35

Report to whom? The police aren't going to do anything and it really isn't a good idea to report neighbours for things other than physical violence.

If they rent the property it's up to the landlord to inspect regularly and lay down some rules if he/she detects a problem. However the landlord may not care that much as long as the place is kept in reasonable order. Not everyone objects to pot smoking.

Police won't be bothered. It's rife here. Unless he is growing? But I have no proof?

Anyway we'll see what happens.

For a moment I thought you neighbours has a pet skunk! Sorry I know that is not helpful but it made me laugh.

I would be annoyed cant you report them ?

So did I!!

SonsRfab · 03/04/2026 00:05

Well I've found a house within budget. 3 beds conservatory semi detached. Next to a woodland. Hoping to view over the weekend 🙏

Oh fabulous, OP! I’d be viewing asap as that will get snatched up in a flash. Keep us updated! (I would still report your neighbour btw, if he’s known for it, one report might be enough).

Mama2many73 · 03/04/2026 07:11

I live in the NE and within a small distance we have a wide range of housing from £50,000 small terraces upto £750,000 detached luxury housing.
When I walk our dog the smell of weed is across all the areas and firstly I think who needs to smoke it at 7am but secondly how bad ut must smell in the houses next door. It has such a pungent smell it must just hang about all the time. We're foster carers and wonder whatt would happen if such a person moved in next door!!
I would report as often as needed and ask the Councillors for advice/help.
I also agree with the PP who mentioned it being stronger when lamps are on etc. I believe its easy to check regarding heat output so it think its sonething police could easily do.

DaveGroh · 03/04/2026 07:12

Haven’t heard that word in a long time, skunk/cheese 🥴

I'm NE too and the same. Very expensive houses verses less than 50k.

We're going for a walk along today to check out if there's any skunk smell and general idea of the area. Although it's overcast today so be better on a sunny day. That's when the fun starts round here. Hopefully we can look again next week as both working this weekend. The estate agent hasn't got back to me yet. They're probably closed for Good Friday?

OP posts:
SonsRfab · 03/04/2026 17:59

We had a walk to see the area. We're not enamoured sadly. I was more concerned about the steps down to the house. Ok now but could be a problem as we age.
But I found one in the place I've always wanted to live. Right near the sea front. It needs upgrading but we don't need to rush to sell ours.

First of all 'Skunk' is a pretty low THC % strain that is as rare as rocking horse shite these days. Do you ever talk with the people who use it? Might be worth mentioning that you have heard people in the street talking about getting the police involved and have they considered getting a dry herb vaporizer instead because this drastically cuts down on the smell. Stoners get pretty paranoid quickly and this might scare them into doing something about it.
I personally like the smell and I have a couple of cannabis perfumes in my collection.

I just said to dh about the growing. He said it'd be there all the time if they were. Good point. Why is it so strong it goes through to ours? There are walls between us ffs?

We had a 'drugs factory ' next door to us in a rented property - they were growing it in every room room in the house. The plants don't smell anything like when it's being smoked. I went into the house after the place had been cleared out by the owner. It only smelt of vegetation.

Go have a look at Leafly website. All of the different strains are catalogued there. I haven't seen Skunk since the mid 90's, these days it's more likely to be Blue Zushi, Toad Venom or Hyper Za.
Perfumes are Nassomatto Black Afghano which smells like Black hashish, and Carolina Herrera Bad Boy le Parfum

AlexStocks · 04/04/2026 19:40

I'm from the US and I kept smelling skunk in and around London. I kept thinking, " I didn't know skunks made it to the UK". FINALLY, I caught up, realizing it was weed. Hubs and I had a good laugh. But why you'd want to smoke skunky weed is beyond my own reckoning.

CurtsyFriends · 04/04/2026 21:05

Ugh I can only imagine how horrible this is for you and your neighbour. I can’t stand the smell of the stuff. And it is so strong.

I spent 8 weeks in a hotel for work a couple years ago and I could set my watch by the person smoking weed. Every day that I had a room which faced the car park in it wafted. I asked to be moved rooms on several occasions because of it. I could even smell it when I was a significant way from the smoking area. I never once smelt cigarette smoke, despite being relatively close to the smoking area on one occasion. So weed goes a hell of a lot further away than cigarette smoke. And it’s just so strong. One day I actually followed the smell to where it got stronger and it was the smoking area (despite no one being there, he must have finished just before I got there). You can almost follow the smell as if it was a green haze like on a cartoon. It must be what it feels like to be a dog tracking smells.

I would also be looking to move if I could. Having said that there is no guarantee that you won’t end up with the same problem at the next house. Even if it is fine now there is nothing stopping a weed smoker moving in next door. A sea breeze may help reduce the smell though.

Olive123456 · 04/04/2026 22:26

My bedroom used to stink of it,the smell came through the loft opening which was in my bedroom. My neighbour was definitely growing it. Thankfully they moved out.

LBFseBrom · 04/04/2026 22:27

Skunk apparently has a high concentrate of sulphur compounds which is why it is so pungent and the smell hangs around. Other cannabis smells are lighter.
