So pissed off. Great neighbours moving because of weed smell *

We have some fantastic neighbours. The family have been there a couple of years now.

Just found out they're moving because the smell of skunk is so strong from their adjoining neighbour. We're terraced. We can smell it in ours so can imagine how bad it is there. It's stronger in the loft. I'm thinking they're growing?
They both rent and we own. I'm dreading who we get next as we've had some horrors in there. I want to move but to get somewhere hopefully quiet/decent will be expensive.

I hope they'll be happy where they go but am gutted. It's so unfair.

You can get the buds on a prescription, too. My BIL gets them for chronic anxiety and depression. He smokes them, I'm not sure there is another way to consume the buds/flowers?

Medical cannabis refers to cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) prescribed for specific health conditions. These include products like dried cannabis flower, oils, capsules, pastilles, and vape cartridges containing cannabinoids such as THC and/or CBD.

Yes, I use oil but my husband uses flowers. He was instructed by the medical staff that smoking it is pretty pointless; you should have a vaporizer that sets for a specific temperature and no higher, which also means that yes, there will be some smell, but to me, it’s the difference between cooking toast (a bit of smell) and burnt toast (smells up the whole fucking house). The correct temperature for a medical vape is between 180 and 200; only one terpene activates higher than 200 (it activates at 220, which is still a lower consistent temperature than smoking).

More importantly, there is a website - he should know the exact name of what he’s getting, and you can then search the website to find out which terpenes are in it, and this should determine how “hot” you set things. Some flower has terpenes that don’t need things set higher than 175.

My DH and I don’t use Curaleaf; we use Cantourage, which is cheaper and uses Curaleaf (and other companies’) products. If Curaleaf is advising people that smoking is no different to medical vaping devices, then they’re letting down their customers in a big way.

If they are growing to any kind of scale, they are also likely to be illegally extracting energy as running hydroponics is expensive. Make an anonymous report:

www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/energy-theft-and-meter-tampering

My ex next door neighbours had tapped electricity from the lamppost outside the house. When the electricians cam to reconnect to the grid ,they had to did a hole about 4 or 5 feet deep. Im certain the landlord was in on it. He had evicted the previous residents with no notice.

I don't know what he gets/where he gets it from/what advice he has been given, I just know he has a prescription for the buds, and he smokes them.

Our county council loans out thermal imaging cameras via county libraries. We borrowed one from the library last year to investigate poor insulation in our house. I took it out on a walk one evening - there was a house a couple of streets over whose roof was lit up like a Christmas tree when viewed through the camera (you attach it to your phone and connect via Bluetooth). Friends in the know said it often stinks of weed round there.

Chatsbots · 30/03/2026 15:10

It's a massive fire risk, having a grow house next to you.

I did a load of research as my tenant was complaining, as she saw plants in the garden. All sorts of issues from illegal electricity supplies to overloading said supply for the lights and heating.

That said, we used to live in a block of flats where everyone else just smoked, never had to put the heating on. Spent the winter in shorts!

People do not grass up neighbours except for violence for goodness sakes.
Live and let live.

If the smell is really that bad, a word in their ear might be enough to send them out to the garden to smoke.

People should complain about antisocial neighbours making other people's lives a misery. Report them every single time and get rid of them.

PullyDog · 30/03/2026 15:41

Growing weed does not smell half as bad as someone smoking it. Cannabis plants won't have such an overpowering smell that it reaches down multiple houses like it would if it was being smoked.

I absolutely hate the smell of it personally but I would imagine they using it are probably nose blind to it or enjoy the smell.

Wonder how long they've been suffering? It'll be super obvious to new viewers

Frumpitydoo · 30/03/2026 15:43

I read that as spunk. YANBU.

bumblebee1000 · 30/03/2026 15:49

My cousin works at an indoor grow facility in Holland..things have changed with cannabis...the new LED grow lights use very little electric, there would not be any suspicious high bills, so no longer bypass the meters, also no heat so not detected with the sensors on helicopters. The old sodium halide bulbs used vast amounts of electric and generated a lot of heat but no longer used. the plants only smell when they flower so thats the last month of the grow, filters can remove most of the smell.

patooties · 30/03/2026 15:51

We had a grow on years ago - 3 doors down. It stank and then set the roof on fire.

report to police.

Friendlygingercat · 30/03/2026 16:18

Whenever I encounter a thread where one party (the complainent) owns and refers to another as renting I think - oh oh here goes. Someone is going to snitch to the landlord. However in this case I would approve of tipping off the LL. If someone is growing weed in their property its the LL who ends up having to shell out thousands of pounds to put the place right and suffers the wrath of the nrighbours. LLs do not generally want to get involved in petty neighbour disputes about parking, bins and kids playing. However in this case the tenants are potentially damaging the property and breaking the law, Even if they arent growing there is often (nowadays) a clause in the lease about smoking (including weed).

You can find the LLs address on the land registry website if you dont know it.

TheGander · 30/03/2026 16:26

I sympathise as we had that from the tenant of the flat downstairs. Although we are owners I considered moving. Went to the council about it and they said all we could do is speak to the police, but we decided against it as he would have turned nasty. Sad to say in the end he died of lung disease.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 30/03/2026 16:35

I grew up in a detatched house and I probably sounds like a terribly privileged snob but living in terraced accommodation has been quite a shock for me.

The previous next door neighbour was a Grandma and her nearly adult grandson and they had frequent screaming matches and he also had a lot of loud, drunken fights with his girlfriend. There was also a dog who got out quite a lot and once on a hot day the front door was open and he came right into our kitchen- I jumped out of my skin when I turned round and he was stood there panting!

But then they moved out and we got new neighbours and they are absolute horrors. This time, a Mum and an adult son in his 30s. Supposedly can't work due to mental health problems, which I'm not surprised by, because he spends all day and all night smoking weed, playing video games and listening to loud rap music, in between loudly shouting on the phone (usually threatening violence against someone or other, he seems to have lots of people he would like to beat up if he could only be bothered.) He's up until 3/4am playing music, shouting and playing shoot 'em up games. We can't open the windows because of the smell and the noise. The Mum goes off and stays somewhere else because he's too noisy for her. He was supposed to have the smaller room but he wanted the Master bedroom (adjoining ours) so his Mum gave it to him. It seems like he's never been told "no" in his life and his Mum is happy to pay for everything and let him do whatever he wants.

It does seem crazy that people can act like this and the only real recourse is to move away- surely it should be the offenders that have to move!

Weird how you just casually threw in there that you think they're growing.

If you actually think this, have you rang 101?

From personal experience you'd be amazed at how little difference that can make. The police need more evidence than smell to get a warrant and they have many, many tips offs. Round here they tend to concentrate on the dealers not the growers.

Absolutely, but none of that is the OP's problem.

If I truly thought I was living near a weed farm I'd make the phone call anyway.

If it’s coming through the walls/loft in the terraces, they are 100 % growing it. Ring the police.

This.

Your experiences were down to awful people, not because you lived in a terrace house.
Yes, you do sound snobby if you think your bad experience is down to the housing.

I am sorry. I ought not to have been rude, but none of what you said adds up... to me.
However, I should have kept my thoughts to myself and I hope you get what you need and want from the medicine💚

It was people going outside to smoke that caused our last flat to stink of the bloody stuff, as it was drifting in through the trickle vents or open windows. Once I had DC to consider I was a bit bolder about going outside and politely asking them to smoke elsewhere, and to be fair, they did. And if they'd said no, I totally would have called the police. "Live and let live" does not extend to filling someone else's home with illegal carcinogenic fumes.

I agree. Some people around here smoke outside and it does waft indoors. Awful.

This gets better. Just been messaging neighbour (nice one) and apparently when she complained about weed he said she should go back to her own country and shouted at her. She's leaving because she doesn't feel safe. She's not from the UK. She's a single parent. Been working and studying to better herself.

I've been in tears. She said she is so grateful to us for being good neighbours.

It's war now. I'm fucking fuming.

No worries! I get that we all have knee jerk reactions sometimes. But I’m sorry to hear that doesn’t match up with your experience, seriously. The doctor who oversees my medical MJ has always been really clear and conscientious about the fact that my prescription is not an excuse for antisocial behavior (ie it’s not a “get out of jail” free card for smoking up a storm and making your neighbor’s house reek), because it’s part of the law: there is 100% ban on smoking it, or your prescription is invalid.

The part of the updated Misuse of Drugs Act that covers the approval for medical MJ states (section 4.3):
“A person shall not self-administer a cannabis-based product for medicinal use in humans by the smoking of the product (other than for research purposes in accordance with regulation 13)”

Oil, or regulated-temperature vape, or edibles - smoking isn’t an option. @Frequency I would just ensure your brother knows if he’s smoking it, he can still be arrested for cannabis, because he’s invalidating the prescription (doesn’t matter where the prescription is from). Also, I mentioned where I get it from because you said he got it from Curaleaf and maybe they’re not telling people not to smoke; the people I get my prescription from make it clear you are not allowed to smoke.
