So pissed off. Great neighbours moving because of weed smell *

We have some fantastic neighbours. The family have been there a couple of years now.

Just found out they're moving because the smell of skunk is so strong from their adjoining neighbour. We're terraced. We can smell it in ours so can imagine how bad it is there. It's stronger in the loft. I'm thinking they're growing?
They both rent and we own. I'm dreading who we get next as we've had some horrors in there. I want to move but to get somewhere hopefully quiet/decent will be expensive.

I hope they'll be happy where they go but am gutted. It's so unfair.

The smell of weed is everywhere. It's awful. By us, there are certain houses that stink as you walk past. Sometimes they'll stop smelling (people have moved or been raided I guess) but then it'll just start somewhere else.

Do report it.

People do not grass up neighbours except for violence for goodness sakes.
Live and let live.

If the smell is really that bad, a word in their ear might be enough to send them out to the garden to smoke.

Oh ffs. “Grass up.” You’re on MN; no one here is a geezer from the East End. We don’t follow the criminal code… often 😂

You should report your neighbours whenever their anti-social behavior moves into law-breaking and stops you from enjoying YOUR property. “Live and let live” only works if they’re not encroaching on your ability to enjoy living.

'Grass up'? Do you live in Albert Square?

And as pp have said, growing often goes along with dodgy electrics, which are a fire hazard.

If the smell is really that bad, a word in their ear might be enough to send them out to the garden to smoke.

So they stink out people's gardens instead.

Yeah sure 😅
Decent neighbour has told them.

I know it's hilarious the way some people think.

With a smell that strong they're doing more than smoking it, report to the police. Report to their landlord or letting agent if you know who they are. Do whatever you can as long as they are there producing that smell you'll really struggle to sell up yourself to get away from it too.

Frequency · 30/03/2026 14:00

In terraced houses, the loft space and crawl space under the floor are not properly separated. That's why it is so strong smelling when they're smoking it next door. They're probably not growing it if you don't smell it all the time.

My kids are partial to the occasional joint, not often, maybe a few times a year, but when we have the large air purifier running on the stairs, I can't even smell it from downstairs. I'm not sure how well it would work if it was situated further away from the source, but you could try it? We have ours for allergies, but it does wonders when we have smoking guests. Ours is by AirTok.

OnlyTheBravest · 30/03/2026 14:03

It is awful but there are no effective protections against low level anti social behaviour in your own home. All you can do is move, do recon into the area you are moving too and hope that your neighbours do not move.

Life is stressy enough without having to come home and feel uncomfortable in the place that's supposed to be your sanctuary no matter how big or small your home is.

DefiantRabbit9 · 30/03/2026 14:06

Report it to both the police and the council. Each side will say it's not their problem initially but eventually when enough complaints come in they'll do something about it.

I was really hoping this thread would be about a small stinky black and white animal.

I hope you're right about legalization 😁

I just said to dh about the growing. He said it'd be there all the time if they were. Good point. Why is it so strong it goes through to ours? There are walls between us ffs?

If they are growing IME the adjoining neighbours would feel their place get a lot hotter than normal. That's what happened when we had a grow in the maisonette and their attic above us.

I wish I had weed-growing neighbours. Our cavity wall insulation has gone, and the HA won't fix it/deny it is an issue. Our power bills are close to £600 a month in winter, and it's still fucking freezing.

How does one go about encouraging their adjoining neighbours to set up a weed farm?

Bet Archie York’s mum wishes she had “grassed up” her neighbour - she might have been a “snitch” but she’d still have her son FFS!

Legalisation would be the best way to reduce or eliminate potentially dangerous illegal cannabis growing operations.

Legalisation would be the best way to reduce or eliminate potentially dangerous illegal cannabis growing operations.

Legalisation would probably also help with the smell, long-term. Different strains have different smells. There are a few houses near us that either grow or smoke it excessively; sometimes the smell is quite pleasant, sometimes it is beyond rank.

I imagine the demand for low-smelling strains would have professional farmers racing to develop new strains to meet the demand.

Yes, this is why I mentioned medical-grade vaping devices. There should be no smell from them EXCEPT what someone breathes out, which shouldn’t be strong enough to go through walls. They don’t constantly make a smell, like either regular vapes or (god forbid) smoking a bong or just smoking regular rolled-up whatever. But as a result, they cost anywhere from £250 to £600. But if you actually need it and don’t want to make your neighbours’ lives more unpleasant, then it’s worth the cost.

If anyone ever tells you they need it for a medical reason, but they’re just plain smoking it or using a bong, they’re absolutely full of shite. If you burn it any hotter than 200C, you’re just destroying any healthy or helpful terpenes it contains - all but one terpene are activated at or below 200. They warn you about this when you use it medically; that if you’re just lighting it on fire, you’re essentially ruining it.

This is what i thought!

That the OP must be in USA and their neighbour's neighbour had a "family" of skunks breeding in the loft!

Don't know why OPs can't be clearer about what they mean!

Yep, me too!

rustieleestopfan · 30/03/2026 14:40

If you can smell it through your walls there's a 99.9999% they are growing it. A few years ago we had a couple of Greek blokes( aka Albanian) move in next door. They wore white decorators dungarees and drove an estate car with a pile of dust sheets in the back. They ser.ed like the best neighbours I could possibly wish for. Quiet, polite, friendly, helpful..until...
I worked late shifts so my very sensible teenager would be alone most nights but had neighbours the other side who are like family to us.
One day DC said that they s.eeled weed but it was okay as they were such hard working fellas and it wasn't hurting anyone.
One day I came into my house and I was met with tge strongest smell of weed imaginable. Within minutes the smell disappeared completely. I spoke to a friend who recommended putting my ear to the wall vents( victoriana terraced house)I could hear the whirring of fans.
I called the police who logged it but didn't act upon it. Called a couple of weeks later and were shirty with me for asking if anything was being done.
Cue a third call a few weeks later and they sent a couple of officers round to investigate. They were so bloody rude to me,asking why id called them when there was no one in the house. Talk about thin blue line.
Eventually they gained entry, using my tools,I know you mot,and there was a full on cannabis factory in every room aswell as the loft.
Seven weeks later and a few doors down another house was busted. I recognised some packaging in the porch as matching items I'd seen being delivered to my Greek next door neighbours and mentioned this to the police. They weren't the slightest bit interested. I also mentioned seeing these menvisit the house and assumed they were friends.
About 10% of the house in my street gave been used as cannabis factories, I kid you not. Im used to smelling it a lot ,but more so on people rather than premises. Mostly grown in industrial estates now or derelict shops etc.
Ask your neighbours to check air vents, loft etc. Id put money on it being a grow house. A single plant is worth between £1k and £1.4K .
They need reporting as they are a massive fire hazard .

They use powerful extractor fans and filters. The smell will come and go quickly ,hence why I realised they weren't just smoking it. Don't bother with crime fighters, contact tge police. My neighbour had built a false wall with plywood in their dining room with a shelf displaying bottles of pop.

You can get the buds on a prescription, too. My BIL gets them for chronic anxiety and depression. He smokes them, I'm not sure there is another way to consume the buds/flowers?

Medical cannabis refers to cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) prescribed for specific health conditions. These include products like dried cannabis flower, oils, capsules, pastilles, and vape cartridges containing cannabinoids such as THC and/or CBD.
