i’ve had a bit of a fall down couple of steps. It’s literally gone all black round my ankle.

That friend did lose half a leg. Anyway.

The black on your friend’s leg sounds like gangrene - not bruising. 🙄

sashaski · 06/03/2026 08:41

FGS

Pricesandvices · 06/03/2026 08:42

You can walk on a broken ankle.
Stop playing fast and loose with your health and get it sorted now.

I will be honest. It has turned very badly black and swollen this evening. However, i am here on my own. It is not painful. I don’t want to bother anyone here. I am going to take an ibruprofen and will put loads of ibuprofen gel on it and i will report back in morning. Night. Xx

Ibuprofen interferes with healing by disrupting your body's crucial inflammatory response to repair the damage. It's counterproductive.

Google PEACE & LOVE

Protect
Elevate
Avoid anti-inflammatories
Compress
Educate

Then:

Load
Optimism
Vascularisation
Exercise

It sounds like torn ligaments but get it checked!

DinoLil · 06/03/2026 09:01

Ouch. I do feel your pain. Literally.

I fell down my stairs nine weeks ago. Bust my foot. It was getting better but three weeks later then I fell again. Oooooh did I do so much more damage that time! Both of my legs turned black.

Anyway, I'm six weeks after the other fall, still have bruising coming out. Its unbelievable!

You must be scared because you're not at home but get medical advice. I've not lost my legs so I'm sure you'll be fine. Drink lots of water, take arnica. And rest up. Sending you a hug from a fellow faller!

FaceEatingLeopard · 05/03/2026 22:30

Yes. Every time anyone twists their ankle it's off with the whole leg. Standard medical practice I'm afraid.

It’s true. I’ve twisted an ankle three times now. The last time, they had to take an arm.

I hope it’s just a bit of bruising op, and heals quickly. Definitely get it checked out today though.

Branleuse · 06/03/2026 09:12

I would be getting it looked at ASAP, but I don't think you're likely to lose your leg from it. Your friend maybe had diabetes or something that affected healing and developed complications or sepsis, because it would be unusual to lose a leg from a twisted ankle or even a broken one, but you do need it looked at and supported and monitored. I def wouldn't be walking on it any more than I had to.
I'm sorry you've had this on your holiday. Flip flops are for the beach, not walking!

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 06/03/2026 09:20

I'm disappointed there are no photos.

Glad you can walk on it and doing ok - stairs + flip flops = lethal combo

Chin up!

Whereabouts are you, given that you need insurance for medical treatment?

She said she’s in the Canary Islands

Happyjoe · 05/03/2026 22:55

The fact you can walk probably means that it's not broken, so at least that's good. Get an xray if you can, just to rule that out anyway then rest, ice, raise your foot, paracetamol or/and ibuprofen. If it swells too severely or feel any numbness, go to the hospital.

And.. stop drinking! ;-) Hope feel better soon OP, sounds nasty and very sore.

I was able to walk on a broken foot, did it for months when they missed a broken bone.

MJFEB2026 · 06/03/2026 09:34

I did something similar a few years ago. Ballet pumps and stairs = not a good combination!
I walked around on it for a day before my foot turned black so I went to hospital and it turned out I had broken a bone in the foot.
Go get it seen!

Some of you are so nice. And some so awful. Such is the world. I think I’ll be grand. Dark bruises are all around my ankle. I can walk on it so it’s not broken. I did have a broken ankle recently so i know the difference. In a few days i can even run hopefully. It’s alarming just now. My friend did lose her leg to a freak accident so that kind of preys on my mind. I’ll be grand though.

It's probably sprained if you can walk on it but the bruising is horrendous.. sprains can cause some SPECTACULAR massive bruising, its fascinated me every time i've done it (which is a ridiculous 10+ kind of amount)

But no, you won't lose your leg from a sprain.

Changednameagain999 · 06/03/2026 09:42

Thanks everyone. There is a surgery nearby I’ll go to this morning. It’s a bit better this morning. Think it’s on the mend.

So disappointed with lack of photos!

Grammarninja · 06/03/2026 09:47

Me too!

BillieWiper · 06/03/2026 10:14

I mean if you broke you ankle badly and didn't ever get any treatment for it, if it was a compound fracture, then you may end up with sepsis or something and could lose a foot but only if you willfully chose to refuse to seek medical treatment for what is clearly a very severe injury.

But no most people don't lose their leg from a fall down steps.

Try not to twist another ankle!

TheRealLillyAllenVerifiedAccount · 06/03/2026 11:46

Have you been yet?

Are you worried that the dr will say there is a risk of amputation? Is that why you are putting off going to them when you need to?

Or are you worried about something else?

You do need to be seen if it is as bad you say. Not because they'll need to remove your leg but because you obviously need some sort of treatment or at least an examination.

anyolddinosaur · 06/03/2026 12:08

You should get it x-rayed and medical advice on how to handle the flight back, you may need a compression bandage or plaster. You can ask your airline for airport assistance, someone will push you in a wheelchair through the airport. Keep it elevated when you can.

notmypeasnotmyallotment · 06/03/2026 12:34

Get it checked out even if you can walk on it, i was walking/hobbling on mine a few years back and when I eventually went to minor injuries the X ray showed it was broken.

I hope they have a paediatric specialist.

I hope they have a paediatric specialist.

@ColdAsAWitches you really are cold as a witch! I'm 65. I don't drink alcohol. I am here for a month.

For the rest who may care. Its badly sprained I'll need to rest it. Luckily pool is very near as swimming will help me stretch it and exercise.

The friend who lost her half leg had a bad freak accident and damaged her ankle. got it seen to straight away but it never healed. A few years later she lost half her leg as it was septic.

I just panicked a bit last night as the worst of the bruising appeared. I'm taking a lot more care as there's very steep steps everywhere here. No more flip flops!

Did you see someone @Changednameagain999 then?

It sounds like a combination of things for your friend, not just her accident.

I hope you feel better soon.
