i’ve had a bit of a fall down couple of steps. It’s literally gone all black round my ankle.

People assume.yiure drunk because youve been walking around on an ankle.you think might be broken for two days and you still.vant be bothered to get a taxi to a hospital, even though you dramatically think you might lose you leg.

You certainly sound like youve been drinking
Actually even more worrying if you haven't

It’s only this evening that it turned black.

If your leg has suddenly gone black, go and get it examined.

It’s only this evening that it turned black.

Blood pools down eventually. Tomorrow will most likely be worse. Can you move your toes?

Ice (but not on naked skin) - wrap it in tissue or thin towel. It’s likely not broken. Hope it heals fast.

Go get it Xrayed. Being able to walk is indication of it not being fractured. I hobbled round on a sore leg following a fall for 4 days last October before finding out it was an ankle fracture. Bruising can look horrific so no wonder you're alarmed

I was wobbling around for over a week before finding out my foot was broken. I knew I'd hurt myself during a run so sort of ignored the soreness and swelling thinking it was either PF or just overuse.

I like to think it's because I'm well 'ard. In reality it was a small fracture that would heal itself if I rested it but because I was ignoring the pain and using my foot, it wasn't healing.

Aluna · 05/03/2026 23:36

Is it painful, swollen, hot or numb OP? Do you have any underlying illness? Are you elderly?

If it really is black and not just a purple bruise it could be a sign of vascular disease or dvt aside from a break.

user593 · 05/03/2026 23:36

When I broke my ankle it went black with bruising but I also couldn’t put any weight on it at all. I was in so much pain I thought I’d throw up. Anyway, I’d still get it xrayed if I were you to be sure.

user593 · 05/03/2026 23:36

… and I still have the leg!

The only person who’s interested in seeing your damaged leg is someone in the medical profession please do not send photos

You should probably avoid Sporner Corner!

Changednameagain999 · 05/03/2026 23:46

I think it’s just a massively bad bruise right round my ankle.

I was not drinking. It happened 2 days ago after breakfast. Very steep steps i missed step on 2 steps from bottom wearing stupid shoes. Fell from there down. My ankles are vulnerable anyway from previous squash injuries. They got me lots of ice and that helped. Tonight I’ve blackness all around my ankle. I’m not sure why people assume I’m drunk. Anyway. I think it’ll be fine.

Sorry, was just teasing you, didn't mean any harm but sorry if I added to the shitness tonight. Just on holiday some folk drink! Fingers crossed all be good and wish you well.

Happyjoe · 05/03/2026 22:55

The fact you can walk probably means that it's not broken, so at least that's good. Get an xray if you can, just to rule that out anyway then rest, ice, raise your foot, paracetamol or/and ibuprofen. If it swells too severely or feel any numbness, go to the hospital.

And.. stop drinking! ;-) Hope feel better soon OP, sounds nasty and very sore.

I worked an 8 hour shift on my feet with a broken ankle, although obviously I didn’t know it was broken at the time.

TheSandgroper · 06/03/2026 00:07

For right now

Rest
Ice
Compression with a bandage
Elevation.

But, really, call a taxi and go to A and E. If your hobbling displaces a broken bit, you may need surgery instead of just plastering and that will take extra time.

Ponderingwindow · 06/03/2026 00:11

If it turned black this evening, go to the hospital now, not tomorrow. Don’t walk to the hospital. Call some sort of transportation. If you are staying in a hotel, ask them to help you arrange transportation if you aren’t sure how to do it.

Changednameagain999 · 06/03/2026 00:17

I will be honest. It has turned very badly black and swollen this evening. However, i am here on my own. It is not painful. I don’t want to bother anyone here. I am going to take an ibruprofen and will put loads of ibuprofen gel on it and i will report back in morning. Night. Xx

TheSandgroper · 06/03/2026 00:22

Don’t want to bother, don’t want to bother.

Bother is going to be bothering you to its fullest extent if you don’t bother to get it sorted out now. The world is full of people who couldn’t or wouldn’t get their fractures seen to properly and are left with life long, permanent impairment.

Millie2008 · 06/03/2026 00:24

Hey, don’t think it’s safe to take both ibuprofen tablets and apply gel is it?

Please don't overdose on ibuprofen

Go to A&E or call 111 to see if they can get you an OOH apt

Ouch! Hope you were ok. You're hardcore!
And to my defence, I did say 'probably', grins. It's what my doc said, that it's a good sign if can walk but obviously not 100% foolproof.

The OP isn't in the UK at the mo, is on holiday.

HollaHolla · 06/03/2026 00:32

I tore ligaments in my ankle stepping off a pavement badly. (Stone cold sober, in flat shoes!)
My ankle and foot went alarmingly black within about 24 hours.
TBF, it was way more painful than the broken bones I've had - and for ages.
Go get it x-rayed. They can strap it up, and get airport assistance so you don't have to walk miles.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/03/2026 00:41

Not painful actually sounds more worrying. Possible nerve damage? You really do need to get checked out.
