As an old wrinkly I'm getting flashbacks to Vietnam. Harold Wilson would issue statements supporting the American war on that unfortunate country. For this he was often bitterly criticised by the far left.

This was his response - ' President Johnson doesn't want my words of support . He wants British soldiers in Vietnam. Well 'e hasn't got them has 'e ? '
Canny old Yorkshire man. Apologies if some ppl already mentioned this. Tory PM Ted Heath told Nixon to do one during Yom Kippur War iirc. But then Heath had been in a tank in WW2.

Is it? Obviously you’d say that because that nonsensical statement applies equally to you.

Ridiculous

GrannyMacFanny · 06/03/2026 10:42

Yeah, you said that before. 🤷‍♀️

Clearly not.

GrannyMacFanny · 06/03/2026 08:18

Well by definition, that's obviously a nonsense statement.

OK. You didn’t say this then @GrannyMacFanny?

BIossomtoes · 06/03/2026 11:05

OK. You didn’t say this then @GrannyMacFanny?

Oh dear

DuncinToffee · 06/03/2026 11:35

@GrannyMacFanny Do you agree with the Government's position on Iran?

Why are you being so unpleasant? There is no need.

Of course you do

I wasn’t a supporter of Starmer either, but I think he is right not to join the US/Israel war with Iran. It’s not our war.

whereisitnow · 06/03/2026 11:56

And Trump eat al are fickle. They long ago showed the so called special relationship is only when it suits, and also that partners do not need to be consulted, but only expected to follow afterwards.

Iran are state sponsors of terrorism, we dont want hezbollah/hamas and other nutters to have access to nukes. It is everyone's war. We should be thanking the US and Israel for doing this.

Or Trump could have not thrown his toys out of the pram last time and sanctioned Iran, despite them allowing much more intrusive inspections than they were legally obliged to.

They still have IAEA inspections, which confirm that Iran isn't trying to produce nuclear weapons. That is confirmed by American Intelligence.

We shouldn't be thanking Netanyahu for this latest idiocy, carried out to keep him out of prison, nor Trump, whose "justification" for it changes more often than his Y-Fronts.

We should be cursing the pair of maniacs.

I see that the future of RAF Akrotiri is in doubt following Starmer's failure to protect them from Iranian strikes.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister said that there were now questions over who should control the bases and that there was "displeasure" Starmer's decision not to send defences to Cyprus despite the expected US attack
in Iran.

He added that he wanted to see "actual, practical, tangible steps" to improve the security at the bases.

Clearly with HMS Dragon not due to arrive for two weeks that is a problem. Added to which the Royal Navy recommended a Type 45 deployment to Cyprus weeks ago and was ignored by the Government.

I guess Starmer could nicely ask Trump if the US could lend the UK some air defence systems but given the lack of support for the US actions in Iran by Starmer (with approval from many on this thread), somehow I don't see this happening.

Actions have consequences and by "standing up to Trump" it looks like Starmer has left Akrotiri defenceless in the short term and may end up losing the base in the long run.
Well done.

Or Cyprus could just ask the US to run it directly and cut out the middleman.

I bet they don't.

Hand it over to Israel and cut out the middle man. Especially since they appear to have bombed it....

1dayatatime · 06/03/2026 16:20

It's seems that the Government laid on evacuation from Oman is a complete shit show.

There were 6500
British nationals seeking evacuation. The aircraft was capable of carrying 400 passengers, however only 80 were able to board. The plane then sat on the runway for 90 minutes looking like a prime attack opportunity for the Iranian drones. Passengers realising this were banging on windows asking to be let off the plane.

And the operational reasons why the plane couldn't take off was that the pilots had exceeded their allowed hours of work and had to take a rest break.

This is absolutely taking the piss and imagine if the Dunkirk evacuation was run along the same lines.

Say what you like about Trump but in no way does the handling of the evacuation from Oman or the defence of RAF Akrotiri give me a favourable opinion of Keir Starmer or the Labour Government.

WTF - do you have any links to back up your bullshit comment.

in reality it looks like the drone attack on Akrotiri was launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon, plus I am actually capable of providing evidence to back this claim up:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/02/uk-airbase-raf-akrotiri-cyprus-suspected-drone-strike

Hezbollah said to have launched drone that struck UK RAF airbase in Cyprus

Two more drones intercepted on Monday, authorities say, in what appears to be sustained targeting of base

Dunkirk was undertaken by the Royal Navy.

Well done indeed. How is Keir Starmer getting praise? He's an embarrassment.
