Bluey is rubbish.

There, I said it.

I have a small DC who is obsessed with it so I’ve seen/overheard lots of episodes. I don’t get why other adults are obsessed with it? Bluey is kind of a cow. I get that she is meant to have ADHD but she is often not kind to Bingo or her Dad. Bingo often has to give in to other people’s wants even though she is 4, she is forever having to be reasonable and understanding, especially towards Bluey. And my DC has said one or two things that have not been the best behaviour and when questioned has said they’ve learnt it off Bluey. Yes, there are some sweet moments for adults, but other than that it’s a blah programme. There are morals in lots of other kids programmes today so I don’t buy that, and some of the 80s/90s kids programmes are much funnier, so I don’t think it’s that. Is it simply all the adult asides that people love?

The other day I saw someone recommend watching Bluey and emulating the father to a new dad, saying that is how you learn to be a parent. What the hell? Is Bluey’s dad really the gold standard of parenting now?

To me, Bluey isn’t that much above that devil, Peppa Pig. I don’t get why people are so crazy about it?

What is annoying about kids TV is how often there is one ‘token’ female like lily bobtail, Zuli (Go Jetters) or Skye. Be nice to see more of a genuine mix in the adventure type series.

This is one of the reasons I liked Octonauts. More than one female character and one of them was the chief engineer who could fix anything!

Totally not the point of the thread (sorry OP!) but my 2 year old keeps asking for what sounds like "the banjo one". I have no idea which one she means! Any ideas? I think there's another character called Banjo but I'd be surprised if she knows its name.

I've just watched Onesies on YouTube. I'm not crying 😭

It's the one with the recycling bins!

Zitouna · 03/03/2026 22:26

I love the episode where Bluey and Bingo make a romantic restaurant for Bandit and Chilli and are trying to get them to “smoochy kiss”. They make a revolting meal for Chilli - and bandit eats it for her, pretending to the kids that it’s delicious. Every time I watch it I think “that’s love” !

LilacOpal · 03/03/2026 22:43

I can't stand Bluey -- it's overly sentimental and the accents are annoying.

Don't come for me, Bluey fans.

ComedyGuns · 03/03/2026 22:45

I’ve have two young adult children so have never watched it, but just watched Best of Bluey season 1 on YouTube…jeez, it’s like, so basic.

I can’t believe a PP was calling it a masterpiece!

Squatbox · 03/03/2026 23:04

Is it cool to hate on Peppa Pig too?

I have seen multiple people say they hate it/have banned it and it’s usually because she is apparently fat shaming her dad and is bossy. or daddy pig being a bad bumbling dad, not true- just overestimates himself. I don’t think they’ve ever watched it.

Are you watching whole episodes or just clips?

I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a masterpiece but I do think it is ambitious and it explores more interesting ideas than most cartoons.

I love the science in Octonauts and happily encourage my child to watch it, but not how they all resemble teddy bears (including the Octopus) nor how they interfere with nature and ward off predators with fish biscuits!

😂

Also, why are all the ‘adults’ so tiny? They wouldn’t be able to handle a bust up between Bing and his best mate.

Edited

When we were deep in the Bing phase I recall an ongoing theory that all the kids were dead (possibly from very very young, so no memories of anything else) and the show was set in an afterlife which existed so that they could grow up. The adults weren't their parents but beings assigned to tend them, hence the supernatural levels of patience.

I suspect it is more that for children in the audience the parents are the least interesting aspect of the show, so they are made small and blobby while the kids are large and detailed because it centres the actual main characters that way.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/03/2026 23:39

I think Bluey is absolutely brilliant.

Wonderfulstuff · 04/03/2026 18:10

Disagree. I think it transcends kids TV.

Also Jack Russell has ADHD, not Bluey. His episode makes me cry every time.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 04/03/2026 18:33

God it’s awful, and the whole parents weeping over it is so weird.

ProfessionalPirate · 04/03/2026 18:53

YANBU. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it is rubbish (there’s much worse out there) but it really doesn’t deserve the level of adoration that it receives.

Anything with Brian Blessed in it gets my vote (Grampy Rabbit is #retirementgoals as far as I’m concerned), but as I said earlier, we are laughing at Peppa not with her, and I really didn’t want toddler DS copying (which he did).

Ben and Holly was just as amusing but less mean spirited. And had a better theme tune.

TheKeatingFive · 04/03/2026 19:05

With respect OP, you are not the target market.

Your small child adores it. Job done.

Personally, I say appreciate what you have. I loved Bluey. I also loved Peppa (no hate from me, bits of it are hilarious).

It's only downhill from here. The shite that they watch when they're older will blow your mind. I am knee deep in the Pokemon years. I would do anything to go back to Bluey.

One of my NCT mum 'friends' banned Peppa Pig because it was 'too heteronormative'.

I knew then that getting out of London would be great for my sanity 😂

Hating Bluey is or should be considered blasphemy or hate speech.

For expressing this abhorrent view at the very least you should be burned at the stake!

FluffyDiplodocus · 04/03/2026 19:15

Are you dead inside?! Bluey is awesome!!

I cannot watch The Baby Race episode without bawling, takes me right back to when DS was late with all his milestones and I was a wreck!

My kids will be a bit old for the Bluey movie (though they still like the odd episode binge!) when it comes out and I may need to bribe them to come with me 😂

It’s stuff like this which is daft. I know (obviously) you aren’t being serious but even great literature has haters and critics. People are allowed not to like something.

I like Bluey. There is worse stuff out there for sure:l, but it isn’t perfect and it certainly isn’t THAT good!

Nutmuncher · 04/03/2026 19:22

I hate the styling of it, the colours are insipid I just think it’s AI-esque slop for the little soon-to-be screen addicts.

User567573 · 04/03/2026 19:29

Bluey is weird because it's they're achieved what Disney did with Disney adults. It's obvious that the creators aimed to create a cartoon which also appeals to the tired adults watching with their children. However the level of obsession by which fully grown adults claim they adore Bluey or are deeply touched by it is fairly juvenile.

The show is really not that deep. It's got some good animation, good writing and some easter eggs designed to trigger fan theories. It's definitely better than many kids content but it's hardly on the level of Studio Ghibli. What is does have is a very transparent attempt to manipulate middle aged women into consuming simplistic content under the pretence of tricking them into thinking they are more intellectual than parents who put on Paw Patrol or Cocomelon.

When in essence, it's all the same. The pacing, character design, sound and animation of Bluey is definitely more overstimulating than Peppa. Each character is made up of so many blocks of colours that it's not comfortable to watch. They use the constant shifting patterns and shapes to capture kids attention the same way Cocomelon does with more obvious colours and camera cuts.

I’ve never cried at a TV show in my life or at many other things that other people would cry at… but Cricket makes me cry EVERYTIME

2021x · 04/03/2026 19:36

Hah I love Bluey and I am single and childfree.

You don't have to like, it doesn't make you a monster or anything.

Find something you can watch together. Maybe crack out Pingu.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 04/03/2026 20:31

Bluey is, in my opinion, an educational programme about parenting. The obvious storyline is there to entertain a small child but the actual subtext is for parents and is,. essentially, respectful parenting propagnda.

How has noone mentioned Faceytalk yet!?! That explores parents being at odds in their parenting approaches and the consequences of not communicating with each other.

And to anyone who has said that the parents set unrealistic expectations of playing with their children I give you Stumpfest (where the children want to play with the tree stump but the dads say no and the mums get tipsy on the balcony), The Dump where the whole episode is them in the car before Bandit throws Bluey's drawings in the bin, Whale Watching where Chilli wants to lie on the sofa and eat crisps, and Escape (I think it's called) where again it's all in the car and Bandit and Chilli are explaining why they want a child free day (and shows how you can entertain a child with just words). There's also Mount Mum and Dad where Bandit and Chilli just lie on the floor pretending to be asleep.

I agree that all the adults who profess exaggerated love for it and come up with odd fan theories and extrapolate way too much from inconsistencies and throwaway comments are creepy though
