Bluey is rubbish.

There, I said it.

I have a small DC who is obsessed with it so I’ve seen/overheard lots of episodes. I don’t get why other adults are obsessed with it? Bluey is kind of a cow. I get that she is meant to have ADHD but she is often not kind to Bingo or her Dad. Bingo often has to give in to other people’s wants even though she is 4, she is forever having to be reasonable and understanding, especially towards Bluey. And my DC has said one or two things that have not been the best behaviour and when questioned has said they’ve learnt it off Bluey. Yes, there are some sweet moments for adults, but other than that it’s a blah programme. There are morals in lots of other kids programmes today so I don’t buy that, and some of the 80s/90s kids programmes are much funnier, so I don’t think it’s that. Is it simply all the adult asides that people love?

The other day I saw someone recommend watching Bluey and emulating the father to a new dad, saying that is how you learn to be a parent. What the hell? Is Bluey’s dad really the gold standard of parenting now?

To me, Bluey isn’t that much above that devil, Peppa Pig. I don’t get why people are so crazy about it?

Honestly some of my best parenting moments have been inspired by Bluey. One time that springs to mind: my husband was out for the evening and my then 8 year old refused to go to bed. She was literally saying “no, you can’t make me, you’re not my mum.”

Usually I would have got mad, but I knew from experience this would make everything drag out and so I decided to try something different and thought to myself “what would Bluey’s parents do?” and turned it into a game. I said “ok. You be the mum. I’m the toddler and I don’t want to go to bed.”

The next half hour was her and her little sister trying to put me to bed while I subtly got them ready for bed and honestly it was hilarious and they went to sleep happily and easily at the end of it.

It was definitely a high risk/high energy strategy and I wouldn’t have the emotional bandwidth to do it on a regular basis. But I’ll always remember that evening and how what could have been a horrible night turned into something special.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing for kids’ TV to be aspirational. It doesn’t make me feel like a bad mum either because it’s very obviously not real! But if something can inspire me that’s a good thing.

I also find my kids play much more nicely together after watching Bluey. They get good ideas from it and Bluey and Bingo are pretty lovely to each other really, for siblings! There are episodes where Bluey isn’t a great big sister but she realises and repairs. And that’s important for kids to see.

See I think Go Jetters is great for this, it’s amusing and not twee at all!

Good god I hated Go Jetters. My DS is 16 now but he absolutely loved it when it was on CBeebies back in the day, I found it so dreadfully boring. Bluey is actually entertaining for parents, it’s occasionally relatable and can be funny.

You obviously haven’t seen the Pass the Parcel episode or The Sign? Both pure genius!

We just watched pass the parcel three times recently -it's very good

That comment could have come from me 🤣🤣🤣 clearly I wasn't being serious but I don't think Bandit and Chilli are that bad 🤷🏼‍♂️

I like Bluey and I strongly discourage my DC from watching any programmes I think are irritating, so we've got a pretty limited rotation. I do actually notice the 4 year old learning from it, especially as many of the scenarios (negotiating friendships; trying again if your drawing isn't perfect; doing a tactical wee even if you don't need one) are directly relevant to his life.

I do agree with PPs who point out that Bandit is still pretty much the stereotype of the useless fun dad who doesn't bother with any of the boring organising, though.

Nooo! I love Bluey. But I have too many questions about ‘The Sign’. What happened to dad’s new job and the house they were moving into. You can’t pull out on moving day!

Edited

I was annoyed not to see the new house!

Also my LO used to cry like bluey and bingo, would take himself to the step and start howling like a little puppy 😂 🤣

Onesies 😭 also sleepy time, cricket and the one where chilli’s dad says ‘no, it was yesterday’ 😭

Cricket is the ultimate weep-fest, I'm welling up just thinking of it.

Gossipisgood · 10/03/2026 11:20

I love Bluey. I watch it with my little Grandson & I see how they try to include something positive in each episode. Now the Bitch that is Peppa, well I'm such a bad person I actually LOL when she got stuck in a tyre in the only episode I've watched & said out loud, 'you deserved that you little witch' :)

SErunner · 10/03/2026 11:23

Agreed. It’s never been put on in our house and never will be. There are so much better things they can be watching.
