Bluey is rubbish.

There, I said it.

I have a small DC who is obsessed with it so I’ve seen/overheard lots of episodes. I don’t get why other adults are obsessed with it? Bluey is kind of a cow. I get that she is meant to have ADHD but she is often not kind to Bingo or her Dad. Bingo often has to give in to other people’s wants even though she is 4, she is forever having to be reasonable and understanding, especially towards Bluey. And my DC has said one or two things that have not been the best behaviour and when questioned has said they’ve learnt it off Bluey. Yes, there are some sweet moments for adults, but other than that it’s a blah programme. There are morals in lots of other kids programmes today so I don’t buy that, and some of the 80s/90s kids programmes are much funnier, so I don’t think it’s that. Is it simply all the adult asides that people love?

The other day I saw someone recommend watching Bluey and emulating the father to a new dad, saying that is how you learn to be a parent. What the hell? Is Bluey’s dad really the gold standard of parenting now?

To me, Bluey isn’t that much above that devil, Peppa Pig. I don’t get why people are so crazy about it?

Oh gosh yes, baby race - I cry every time . "You're doing great" 😭

Bearbookagainandagain · 03/03/2026 17:29

Our kids only started watching relatively recently, but we've found it quite funny so far. It's easier for us to watch that Duggee for instance.

Kids are only 2 and 4, so the stories are a little bit more elevated than what they usually watch.

I wouldn't consider this show for educational or morals purposes though.

IAmTheFloorCleaner · 03/03/2026 17:15

Ha, in my defence I did say it was slightly above Peppa!

😂Like saying God is slightly above Elvis😉

LemonAir · 03/03/2026 17:30

It has its moments but overall it’s too mawkish and preachy for me.
Don’t like the God references (Flat pack episode) either.
Dd loved it for a long while but seems to have gone off it now. I’m pleased because she learned a lot of really annoying, whiny behaviour from it.
It can be funny but older kids and adults liking it baffles me. It makes me think of the early days of the Simpsons - that was an animated show that was actually for adults. It was funny, sentimental without being schmaltzy and clever.
Bluey is a pre school kids show which cottoned on to the gap in the market and the fact that adults can’t just let kids have anything these days and decided to capitalise on this, partly by ripping off the Simpsons.
They are slowly turning Bandit into this generations Homer Simpson. They even have him overeating and complaining about his weight.
When Bluey returns next season, Bluey will be Bart, Bingo will be Lisa and the transformation will be complete.

See I find that meaningless and saccharine. It’s the maybe you saw something you wanted that makes my eyes well. Ds did do his first wobbly walk in the kitchen towards me though Smile I also relate to the worry and fretting.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 03/03/2026 17:37

I dislike Bluey intensely. The mum's voice, the dad letting them run wild in public. The only bit in the whole thing that I like is the Flat Pack one right at the end. And I mean the very last couple of seconds.
Otherwise it's awful.

My first did her first steps towards me too!!! And that bit wrecks me as well. But the "you're doing great" bit is just - Ahh, how much that would have meant to me at that stage. I got a lot of criticism as a ftm and took every word to heart. Yeah, I can spend that whole episode in tears if I'm also on my period 😂

Doranottheexplorer · 03/03/2026 17:41

Sleepytime is one of the greatest episodes of TV ever. Never has it been on and I've not bawled my eyes out.

I do agree she's a bit annoying and they could do with telling her off occasionally.

Shes different because she is sensitive. The same as the monkey is different because he is different. She isnt meant to be ND muffin is.

Muffin isn’t supposed to be ND either… the creator has been on a podcast and specified she’s a normal 3 year old.

Bluey doesn’t always get her own way. This episode of Grannies was a great example of Bluey learning how the world works, and putting her ego aside.

“In the Bluey episode "Grannies" Bluey learns that being right isn't as important as playing and having fun with her sister, Bingo. After arguing about whether grannies can dance, Chilli advises her"Do you want to be right, or do you want the game to keep going?".”

Spookyspaghetti · 03/03/2026 17:48

I never hear criticism of toddler/kid animated characters that are male and annoying (Bing, Rolly, Happy) and struggle with playing nicely and taking turns. I only ever hear (mostly) women complain that Peppa Pig, and now apparently Bluey, ‘aren’t kind’ because they say what they think and are active within the narrative. Why exactly should little girls, real or fictional, be kind over everything else while boys are allowed to be boisterous and most importantly are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them?!

Every woman who criticises the behaviour of Peppa and Bluey should have a long hard think about what kind of role models girls should have and if those role models really need to be held to a higher standard than their male counterparts.

Absolutely everyone hates Bing.

Edit: I may be exaggerating slightly.

DysmalRadius · 03/03/2026 17:50

I quite like Bluey -it isn't as casually demeaning and spiteful as Peppa Pig - and it addresses common issues in a way that makes it easy to say 'remember in Bluey when she regretted spending her money/wanted to take a toy she found at the park/didn't win a prize' etc.

Sometimes kids find it easier to emulate the behaviour of a character they enjoy than do the 'right thing' in the thick of an emotional situation.

Janet and Rita also crack me up as my brother and I used to play a game called 'Old Ladies' which is oddly similar!!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 03/03/2026 17:50

My kids weren't into it when they were super young but my 6.5yr old was laughing his head off at it today.
I decided to listen in and I was laughing too. It's good. It's nice.

goz · 03/03/2026 17:51

I think the content of Bluey is actually very far away from Peppa. Peppa from the few I’ve are just mindless drivel, bluey tackles different things parents or children will go through and deals with it in an engaging way.

Are you kidding? Everyone hates Bing, apart from me I think! I don’t actually mind Bing; he’s annoying but he’s three and three year olds are overwhelmingly annoying.

Likewise Peppa is bossy and whiny but she’s four, any realistic depiction of a four year old isn’t going to be wisely discussing her part in it. Some Peppa moments are quite funny to be fair.

ChequerToRed · 03/03/2026 17:53

YABVU. Bluey is a great show, and some episodes are Godfather Pt II levels of cinematic excellence condensed into a 20 minute kids animation.
Also, I’ve slipped on my beans.

Look, we’re all entitled to our opinions but you’re massively, gigantically unreasonable.

It’s a masterpiece. There are episodes that have moved me to tears. And those two dogs are the parents we all want to be.

It’s one of the few kids programmes that I would gladly watch as an adult without a kid there. I mean, I don’t, but it’s brilliant.

Poor little bug on the wall,
No one to love him at all..

I’ve criticised the Dad and I am criticising Bluey because she is the main character? I haven’t criticised Bingo, I think Bluey treats her badly and gets away with it - very rarely is it dealt with properly by her parents. That’s not good role modelling for kids

You’re taking this way too seriously! My child has lots of strong female characters with all sorts of characteristics in their life and there are other programmes with cool female characters. I just think these two characters are rubbish

and yes, everybody hates Bing. I don’t know what a roly or a happy is.

Here's the daily prize for overbearing mumsnetism of the day. Are you normally this high strung?

Revoltingpheasants · 03/03/2026 18:00

What is annoying about kids TV is how often there is one ‘token’ female like lily bobtail, Zuli (Go Jetters) or Skye. Be nice to see more of a genuine mix in the adventure type series.

I only meant this thread as lighthearted! I have to share a bit of my life with Bluey because even if it isnt on my child tells me about something that happened or repeats phrases, so I needed an outlet for my displeasure!
