Bluey is rubbish.

There, I said it.

I have a small DC who is obsessed with it so I’ve seen/overheard lots of episodes. I don’t get why other adults are obsessed with it? Bluey is kind of a cow. I get that she is meant to have ADHD but she is often not kind to Bingo or her Dad. Bingo often has to give in to other people’s wants even though she is 4, she is forever having to be reasonable and understanding, especially towards Bluey. And my DC has said one or two things that have not been the best behaviour and when questioned has said they’ve learnt it off Bluey. Yes, there are some sweet moments for adults, but other than that it’s a blah programme. There are morals in lots of other kids programmes today so I don’t buy that, and some of the 80s/90s kids programmes are much funnier, so I don’t think it’s that. Is it simply all the adult asides that people love?

The other day I saw someone recommend watching Bluey and emulating the father to a new dad, saying that is how you learn to be a parent. What the hell? Is Bluey’s dad really the gold standard of parenting now?

To me, Bluey isn’t that much above that devil, Peppa Pig. I don’t get why people are so crazy about it?

I adore Bluey. I really love its values and the parenting shown in it, although I appreciate nobody could parent like that all the time. It makes me laugh so much and there are several episodes that have really moved me.

I'm sorry to tell those with younger DCs, but Bluey is a very typical 7 yo and not ND at all!

ChalkOrCheese · 03/03/2026 18:42

It's shit. It's like the difficult parts of parenting in real time. The annoying bits are annoying enough without reliving them vicariously and becoming irritated.

Sleepytime is one of the greatest episodes of TV ever. Never has it been on and I've not bawled my eyes out.

I do agree she's a bit annoying and they could do with telling her off occasionally.

Yes! We love this one so much in our house.

Bing is a dick much worse then bluey. Baby race and early baby are great episodes. They are meant to be at the weekend most of the time

Bing is indeed a dick 😂
absolutely love Bluey!

TheGreenTeddy · 03/03/2026 18:56

I honestly think ‘Mum and Dad’ are quite often neglecting their parenting duties. I know I’ve thought during episodes that someone (usually Bluey) needs to be told off!
Shaun for example - has been a total pain in the ass in this house and DC quite rightly told that’s enough of that!

Bloodycrossstitch · 03/03/2026 18:56

I don’t have strong feeling either way about Bluey as a show but how obsessive and cultish grown adults get about it puts me off it massively.

Puffin rock is my favourite modern show that my kids are watching right now. Also Kiri and lou mainly because of how catchy the little tunes in it are 😂

Cryingatthegym · 03/03/2026 18:40

I'll concede that perhaps I've not watched it closely enough to pick up on all those nuances!

Tbh I tune a lot of it out - unless DC want to watch and talk about it together I don’t want to spend my time watching cartoons. But the episodes I have watched are mostly great. There are many little jokes - Bandit is an archaeologist (there’s a little clip of him giving a conference talk about a bone - he’s got a doctorate!) and Chilli works in airport security. 🤣

Tigerbalmshark · 03/03/2026 19:09

I think many people find Bing annoying - I have never seen a thread mention him on here without everyone piling in to say how irritating he is (I actually didn’t mind him, he’s a very accurate toddler with very accurate toddler concerns, and DS responded very well to “no you can’t have your book in the bath/chase a goose in the park/refuse to go to the toilet because you are playing, remember that Bing episode?”)

Peppa I always assumed was meant to be annoying - even DS thought she was “smug and bossy” aged 4, the humour came from the entirely predictable mishaps. Laughing at her not with her. I don’t think anyone actually likes her.

Bluey is “what would happen if your parents just went along with your imagination” - so kids do love it, because what would happen if your parents actually played human statues in the middle of the road, or pretended to be a chicken all day? It would be quite funny, if you are aged 4-6.

Pricesandvices · 03/03/2026 19:12

It's not as good as Hey Duggee.

I’ve criticised the Dad and I am criticising Bluey because she is the main character? I haven’t criticised Bingo, I think Bluey treats her badly and gets away with it - very rarely is it dealt with properly by her parents. That’s not good role modelling for kids

You’re taking this way too seriously! My child has lots of strong female characters with all sorts of characteristics in their life and there are other programmes with cool female characters. I just think these two characters are rubbish

and yes, everybody hates Bing. I don’t know what a roly or a happy is.

Edited

You are entitled to think the character and show is rubbish. I’m just pointing out that it’s only ever female protagonists that are criticised for being bossy or outspoken or not behaving in the very narrow way we have deemed acceptable for women and girls.

I’ve sat through a lot of Bluey and can only think of one episode (where Bluey and Judo run away) where Bluey is genuinely horrible to Bingo, and maybe Hammerbarn. But both of those are relatable because it is how children act and girls should know that they can make mistakes, learn, and grow without having to be perfect all the time.

I also have heard on several occasions both kids and parents refer the Bluey as a boy and are shocked when told that B and B are both girls. That says a lot about how boy characters are expected to act vs girl characters.

The dad can kind of be annoying and problematic but he is not the protagonist. It’s like a fantasy version of a dad tbf.

(Peppa is aimed at much smaller children hence why the plots are less developed and less engaging for adults but it is very well written and hilarious)

atamlin · 03/03/2026 19:35

You take that back!

I think it is more because she is blue…

I model myself on Chilli

Yeah but how many episodes do you need to watch to catch on 😆 I could understand if it was people who just see the character on T-shirts etc

How Dare You Greta GIF

Bluey is a national treasure here in Aus.

If we could make her Prime Minister we would.

I love Kiri and Lou. Do you watch Puffin Rock because you just like it or because that child psychologist wrote about it being better for development? (Just curious as I know a couple of people who watch it for that reason)

I will probably get blasted for this but we are watching a lot of Rock, Paper, Scissors atm. It’s probably too American to watch for a long period of time but it’s absolutely hilarious and a nice break from Paw Patrol which kids love but I find unwatchable as an adult. (Usually watch the English dubbed version from Channel 5) It’s like Aqua Team Hunger Force but for kids.

I've been trying to strength train myself to watch Sleepytime just once without crying. I'm getting better, but still haven't made it through a full watch yet!

It doesn't take psychiatrist to work out that it's because my mum died, before any grandchildren were born, and the bit where Bingo is at the sun and hears her mum saying 'Remember, I'll always be here for you, even if you can't see me, because I love you' gets me every single time.

Gagamama2 · 03/03/2026 21:44

Watch Bing and then come back to me…Bluey is a delight compared to that whining little wetter.

BestBefore2000 · 03/03/2026 21:54

My husband got THE biggest compliment from our 5 yo daughter over the weekend...she said "Daddy - you're an even funner dad than Bandit!"
Wowser! Compliment indeed.
Apparently she said it after he'd been doing Daddy Robot for ages!
Tbf I was rather proud of him - not bad considering he's an older dad (50) ❤️

readingmakesmehappy · 03/03/2026 22:01

We love Bluey, loathe Bing and have never allowed Peppa in the house.

I love that Bluey and Bingo make imaginative games out of nothing, that the parents get to be fully rounded people and that they often use classical music for the soundtrack.

readingmakesmehappy · 03/03/2026 22:04

Oh, I also love that it experiments with form and style within its own framework eg Rain has no speech at all; episodes like Bingo and Rusty put other characters at the centre; Dragon is in a totally different style of animation as if the characters are drawing it etc etc. It never condescends to its audience.

Themammy101 · 03/03/2026 22:05

Got to disagree! Bandit is a top notch dad and my boys absolutely love it as do DH and I. It is the best cartoon of this day and age in my humble, humble opinion. I grew up with ed, edd, and eddy and dragonball z. Bluey surpasses them both x

Cryingatthegym · 03/03/2026 17:04

And those two dogs are the parents we all want to be.

Absolutely not! Bluey pisses me right off and I'm often mind blown at how much time the parents seem to invest in pretend play and doing everything the way the children want things to be done. Don't they have jobs? Housework?! Want to have adult conversations sometimes? Or just to sit on the sofa and scroll in peace every now and again???

The only good thing about Bluey is that all 3 of my kids will sit and watch it quietly together without any squabbling over the TV. Even the 11 year old loves it.

Yes to all those things.
There's an episode of them procrastinating housework, an episode where dad teaches Bluey not to interrupt him talking to other adults, and an episode of them obviosuly hungover wanting to lay on the sofa eating crisps. Dad is also seen laying on the sofa on his phone or trying to watch cricket/racing.

Themammy101 · 03/03/2026 22:10

i am relating hard to every parent on this threat and their love for Bluey! The heelers are the parents we all aspire to be x

lemondropsandchimneytops · 03/03/2026 22:15

Totally not the point of the thread (sorry OP!) but my 2 year old keeps asking for what sounds like "the banjo one". I have no idea which one she means! Any ideas? I think there's another character called Banjo but I'd be surprised if she knows its name.

I've just watched Onesies on YouTube. I'm not crying 😭
