Bluey is rubbish.

There, I said it.

I have a small DC who is obsessed with it so I’ve seen/overheard lots of episodes. I don’t get why other adults are obsessed with it? Bluey is kind of a cow. I get that she is meant to have ADHD but she is often not kind to Bingo or her Dad. Bingo often has to give in to other people’s wants even though she is 4, she is forever having to be reasonable and understanding, especially towards Bluey. And my DC has said one or two things that have not been the best behaviour and when questioned has said they’ve learnt it off Bluey. Yes, there are some sweet moments for adults, but other than that it’s a blah programme. There are morals in lots of other kids programmes today so I don’t buy that, and some of the 80s/90s kids programmes are much funnier, so I don’t think it’s that. Is it simply all the adult asides that people love?

The other day I saw someone recommend watching Bluey and emulating the father to a new dad, saying that is how you learn to be a parent. What the hell? Is Bluey’s dad really the gold standard of parenting now?

To me, Bluey isn’t that much above that devil, Peppa Pig. I don’t get why people are so crazy about it?

I'm not a huge fan of Bluey either. My kids will watch it but it's not their favourite. I don't consider it a lot better or worse than most of the other stuff they watch.
Bandit is useless frankly. His learned helplessness in the swimming pool episode is pathetic to watch. No stereotypes are actually being broken here. He's still the fun dad and sensible mum still has to come along and save the day.
We are Hey Duggee fans here. It is properly laugh-out-loud funny and doesn't pull any punches with its non-sequitur humour or quirky characterisation. It is so very clever and parodies things like Apocalypse Now while still appealing to my 3yo (who is obsessed with the Castle Badge episode for some reason). To my mind it is more original in its approach than Bluey and less mawkish.
I also try to encourage them more towards the vintage shows of my day, e.g. Rosie and Jim, old Postman Pat and Fireman Sam episodes (the modern versions of those latter two are awful), and even of my parents' generation (my kids love Mr Benn and Trumpton especially). Sometimes, though, you of course can't predict what they'll like (they're also VERY into Gladiators at the moment).

Bluey is weird because it's they're achieved what Disney did with Disney adults. It's obvious that the creators aimed to create a cartoon which also appeals to the tired adults watching with their children. However the level of obsession by which fully grown adults claim they adore Bluey or are deeply touched by it is fairly juvenile.

The show is really not that deep. It's got some good animation, good writing and some easter eggs designed to trigger fan theories. It's definitely better than many kids content but it's hardly on the level of Studio Ghibli. What is does have is a very transparent attempt to manipulate middle aged women into consuming simplistic content under the pretence of tricking them into thinking they are more intellectual than parents who put on Paw Patrol or Cocomelon.

When in essence, it's all the same. The pacing, character design, sound and animation of Bluey is definitely more overstimulating than Peppa. Each character is made up of so many blocks of colours that it's not comfortable to watch. They use the constant shifting patterns and shapes to capture kids attention the same way Cocomelon does with more obvious colours and camera cuts.

Good summary and I think that’s the problematic nature of it for me. Parents (well, mothers, let’s face it) convincing themselves they are so superior because their child likes Bluey rather than Paw Patrol is tedious.

Onesies 😭 also sleepy time, cricket and the one where chilli’s dad says ‘no, it was yesterday’ 😭

Sleepytime has reduced me to tears about 8 times. I have to leave the room during onesies (also an IVF mom)

Its a great show.

CambridgeCats · 04/03/2026 20:53

You obviously haven’t seen the Pass the Parcel episode or The Sign? Both pure genius!

RobertJohnsonsShoes · 04/03/2026 21:16

I’m with you on that. Smarmy motherf***s

IeatPotNoodles · 04/03/2026 21:20

Hate it. YANBU

restingbitchface30 · 04/03/2026 21:21

Bluey is incredible, it’s a hill I’ll die on. It’s encouraged my almost 4 yo twins to play some if the games Bluey and bingo play. And honestly since we started watching it I’ve noticed my partner trying to outdo bandit! It’s a great show! And some episodes have me bawling. My son finds the cinema episode hilarious, it’s worth watching to hear his giggles alone!

blubberball · 04/03/2026 21:23

I've watched some Bluey. There are no small children in my home

omg my daughter was obsessed with that episode too. The first thing on tv to make her laugh was that suit of armour clanking 🤣 and it still does to this day and she’s two years older* now. We love duggee 🫶🏻

People like to slag Peppa Pig off these days, but I remember some bits and characters being hilarious. The Miss Rabbit working all the jobs, and the Brian Blessed character stranded on an island saying "I'm going to make a mark in the sand for every time I think about cheese"

I’m not going to lie, I turned the voting off because I figured I would be told that I was being massively unreasonable! 😂 but I don’t get the masterpiece view? Now, Trapdoor was a masterpiece to me, but Bluey is so….meh!

Omg trapdoor!!!! I'd forgotten all about this!!!

Madame Gazelle locking the glitter away in a safe is hilarious.

Also the United Nations day in nursery 😭

Nushi21 · 04/03/2026 21:51

Well I didn’t even know that Bluey was a girl!!!

vincettenoir · 04/03/2026 21:54

YABU. I love Bluey and I especially love Bandit!

PinkLegoBalloon · 04/03/2026 22:00

Ah I love Bluey! 🩵

Bluey has ADHD? I thought she was just meant to be a kid,
Which bits of her suggest ADHD?

Atari5000 · 04/03/2026 23:06

I’m 100% here for Bluey my almost three year old and 16 month old girls love it!!
However the three year old also likes Paw Patrol and Jojo and Gran Gran both of which I can happily sit and watch with her!
Bing I don’t get at all, what a whiner 😂

FineandDandie · 05/03/2026 19:51

Also loathe Bluey - sentimental schmaltzy garbage. I do actually really like Peppa, though! And have a v soft spot for Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom!

Aranciata · 05/03/2026 20:16

CurbsideProphet · 03/03/2026 17:01

The episode Onesies gets me every time (IVF mum).

There are many other children's TV programmes far more unbearable than Bluey.

Also an IVF mum and I really hate that episode, when Chilli says something like it's just not meant to be (for her sister) just sounds so flippant and minimising, which I encounter in real life and on here.

Not a fan of Bluey anyway but DH and DC are.

Smileysmoke · 05/03/2026 20:18

It's much better than bing. Bing drives me up the wall !! How are the tiny adults carers for the huge children? It makes no sense.

Ricecrispiesatsix · 05/03/2026 21:13

LilacOpal · 03/03/2026 22:43

I can't stand Bluey -- it's overly sentimental and the accents are annoying.

Don't come for me, Bluey fans.

Wow that’s just rude to Australians! How embarrassing for you.

weareallcats · 05/03/2026 21:17

Love it. My teens recently discovered it and watched the whole thing! The best thing we had when they were small was Ben and Holly.

weareallcats · 05/03/2026 21:19

And trapdoor is clearly excellent, for me the intro alone is a masterpiece, but when I showed it to my dc they were unmoved.

weareallcats · 05/03/2026 21:21

I like early Peppa but think it has jumped the shark now. Charlie and Lola was always well observed.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/03/2026 21:31

DappledThings · 03/03/2026 16:54

Never heard anyone suggest Bluey had ADHD or any behaviour that implies it.

I think it shows unrealistic levels of parental engagement in pretend play but nothing wrong with being aspirational that way.

The children generally play well together, people make mistakes and talk about them and learn from them.

And its often absolutely hilarious.

I think we must be watching a different Bluey!

I agree with this. Especially the parenting!! Nothing like a bit of mum guilt!! 😂 but nice to see parents playing with their kids.

never though she had a diagnosis of ADHD.

the stories are good and relatable.
