To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

Yes - do it, but buy two to protect both sides of your dropped kerb.

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/03/2026 16:52

I am thinking of doing this because of selfish neighbours. One family have 5/6 vehicles, sometimes 7,they have already taken 2 parking spaces that aren’t theirs, they have a double garage but don’t use it.If you say anything you get a mouthful of abuse from the fishwife daughters.

People are so selfish now.

I wish this was my main worry. 😀
I mean this lighthearted, so don't take offence.

WonderingWanda · 01/03/2026 16:53

Does it actually prevent you from getting out? How much time do you spend looking out of your front window op? Is it from your lounge or kitchen? It might be cheaper to rearrange your room so you are facing the other way, or get some sort of venetian blind so you can let light in but block the view. I can't help but think you are being a bit petty minded here.

Why do people think they've got the right to park outside their house. They need to realise they don't.

The first line of my post saids that I don’t own the road. If others were a bit more considerate, I wouldn’t even consider it…

I'd do it. I'm petty as fuck.

You still think you have the right to park outside your house

Nourishinghandcream · 01/03/2026 16:58

Definitely do it.👍

Buy a cheap MOT'd runner with £20pa tax and insure it TP only with <1k miles pa (don't know if you can specify sub-1k miles pa?) to keep costs to an absolute minimum.
Road legal, no-one can touch you for it.🙂

Your own peace of mind is priceless.

Lol no offence taken! I've got other things on my mind, but just thinking about this van being my daily view for who god knows how long is driving me nuts.

Our old neighbour did this. The person who kept parking in front of his house continually did so in a way that made it awkward getting on and off his drive, and also awkward for the house next door to get on their drive.

The parker had a house with a driveway that would easily fit 4/5 cars, but they put up some basketball hoops for their teenagers (there is a hoop in the park at the end of our street) and parked four cars on the road. As all of the houses have drives, and the ones on his side have large drives, the street isn’t really designed with parking on it in mind.

irritated neighbour bought a small car, smart car size, and parked it to stop annoying neighbour parking there.

No, it doesn’t stop me from getting out. I just don’t like it being my view every day. I wouldn’t have minded the car, but not a huge van, especially when their driveway is empty. I just think they’re utterly selfish. It’s the living room. I live in a bungalow, so can’t exactly go upstairs and look out the windows there instead!

Our NDN have done this and they’re absolute nutters. This is one of the reasons we think they’re insane anyway but there are others…

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/03/2026 17:06

If you can afford it, do it!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/03/2026 17:07

Good luck with finding a 'cheap' car! I could do with replacing my old banger but when I looked around for something else it was coming up at least three grand to have a road legal car!

What happened to all the £300 cars that we used to be able to pick up?

I don’t care what other people think about me. I’d rather be nuts than selfish.

I know what you mean OP, but my friend died a few weeks ago (aged 41).
Don't let this bother you too much.
I'm not being dismissive. x

Wouldn't blame you in the slightest.

I wonder if it’d be cheaper to put a moped type thing rather than a car.

It would need to be chained up like something in a dungeon otherwise CF neighbour would move it . Or more likely tip it over .!

One of my colleagues had to look at a DynoRod van parked outside , don;t know if they still are but they were a luminous orange , glowing even with the curtains drawn. Her neighbour (who drove the van ) said they didn;t want it outside their own window Shock

LuckyOliveDeer · 01/03/2026 17:09

Go for it

FastFood · 01/03/2026 17:09

Imagine that us who don't own a car have to see your ugly cars everywhere.
But yes, get another car just to piss off your neighbour, very mature.

BobLemon · 01/03/2026 17:14

A bloke in our town bought a small trailer to park outside his house

WorkCleanRepeat · 01/03/2026 17:17

Do it.

To be fair ive considered buying the biggest cheapest rust bucket of a van i can find to park outside one of my neighbours houses for a year just because they are such moaners about people parking anywhere near the drop kerb (They should just extend the drop kerb like everybody else has and stop being cheapskates)

Seaitoverthere · 01/03/2026 17:22

I was very tempted to last year after nearly being hit twice leaving my drive as I couldn’t see round the motor home parked outside. We are fairly close to a bend and cars start to speed up a bit having gone round the bend slowly.

Didn’t in the end as it moved but I was very close.

How fucking sad.
What did Michelle Obama say?
When they go low, we go high.

Just ignore.
