To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

Good luck with finding a 'cheap' car! I could do with replacing my old banger but when I looked around for something else it was coming up at least three grand to have a road legal car!

What happened to all the £300 cars that we used to be able to pick up?

ULEZ!!

You sound unhinged. It is a public street and anyone with a vehicle is entitled to park it there.

I would rather be unhinged than selfish and inconsiderate 😁

It is about privilege - as other poster said you live in safe country, have fresh safe water etc etc - worry about something worthy

you obviously can get out your drive or this would be a different post

it is sooooo privileged to buy a car not to use and just keep outside your house

I’m envious that this is your biggest worry in life

So basically accept people being arseholes because I have water and food?

I couldn't care less about the view, just wish households didn't have multiple cars so I could actually find a parking space...

ironsSteve · 01/03/2026 18:21

Get something low and long - it’s a great idea and deliciously petty

How are these people not embarrassed being such bad neighbours?

My neighbours go out of their way to be kind and thoughtful.

Same here.

You just need to remind yourself that it’s not that deep.

Why waste valuable time energy and money worrying about something that really doesn’t have an effect on your every day life.

Being negative and wasting energy on thinking about this is a choice. Choose to let it go.

that £1000 (easy) that you’re willing to spend on this situation could be spent on a wonderful week away somewhere abroad instead.

Ohyeahitsme · 01/03/2026 18:44

You'd be nuts. For the expense of the Tax, MOT and insurance alone.

DaisyDooley · 01/03/2026 18:49

Oh please please do this.

PrettyPickle · 01/03/2026 18:56

And this is where I think I may need help.

The adult, reasoned and rationale side of me says, "no thats a lot to spend for no real gain".

But then the Devil in me says, "yeah go ahead, they deserve it, you have tried the adult way, now lets go down the kids in a playground route" cos I really can be that petty!

Our neighbours have four cars for only two drivers. They permanently park one car outside our house, but leave the road outside their house empty. Every weekend they wash and valet all four cars.

It's parked in front of our house so often that it's now on Google Maps.

Fucking weirdos.

hcee19 · 01/03/2026 19:27

You would also had to get your cheap little car insured. No car can be on a public Rd without insurance, whether you are driving it, or not.. Is it really worth paying out alot of money to prove a point?. ...More money than sense, you do not own the road outside your house.

You need to punish them and entertain yourself by flinging a handful of birdseed over the roof . The resultant flocks of greedy birds scrabbling and shitting on their paintwork and windows might not make them move but it'll send them into a Valet Frenzy .

I had to park my car down the road at my Parents (I insisted Dad kept his space for his car) . There were trees , I had to jet wash my car twice in a week .
I don't think anyone threw seeds on my car , it wasn't poaching anyone's space !

Pricesandvices · 01/03/2026 19:34

You’ve missed the point of the thread.

I don't mind if people park there, as long as they leave some space for me to get in and out of my driveway. A lot of people park way too close to the dropped kerb, which makes it very difficult for me.

My neighbour has every right to park there, just like I do. But if you have two vehicles and need to park one in front of your neighbours house, wouldn't it be more polite to park the van in front of your own house and the car in front of your neighbours? They don't want to see it, but neither do I, and it's not even my van.

OP posts:
TheAutumnCrow · 01/03/2026 19:42

My near-neighbour parks sometimes parks outside my house with the engine running and radio blasting, instead of outside his own, often for 30 minutes at a time. He’s always pissing about on his phone, eating McDonald’s takeout.

It’s because he doesn’t want his wife seeing him, which is comedy gold because everyone can hear him within a mile radius. In fact he’s probably waking their baby up doing it.

We’re watching it like a Mike Leigh drama.

hcee19 · 01/03/2026 19:44

She mentioned tax and an mot but not insurance. Not that l could see anyway, but stand corrected if she did...

You’ve contradicted yourself here. You’ve said you don’t mind if people park there, you just want them not to park over the dropped kerb. Then you go on to say actually you have an issue that a van is parked there, so you do have an issue with people parking there.

If the issue truly was not being able to see you could solve this by popping round the neighbours and kindly asking if they’d be more mindful of how far over the dropped kerb they’re parked as it’s making visibility hard when trying to get out your drive.

janietreemore · 01/03/2026 17:59

So it's blocking the view from the only front window in your home? That must be unpleasant especially if the front garden is small or non existent. It's a reason for not living in a bungalow that I had not previously thought of!

My neighbour directly opposite me has a bungalow. Outside her house is a small layby which the council have told her is a ' passing place/ short stop ' area.
Everyday a man who lives up the street parks his big white van outside her front .
She spends time walking from room to room crying.
I mentioned to her that if she parked her car on the front it would stop him. but she won't
Doesn't see why she should. I'm afraid the only alternative is to walk from room to room then

You’re being intentionally difficult because you're so keen on making your point. These are two separate issues.

I've had multiple people park right up to the dropped kerb, which makes it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway.

Now, there's the van driver who decided to dump his vehicle outside my house instead of his own. He could have parked it in front of his house, and put the car there instead, but he clearly prefers to keep it out of his view. Yet, somehow, it's unreasonable for me to not want to see it either.

OP posts:
Midnights68 · 01/03/2026 20:02

I think if it were me I would park my own car there - as in, the one you currently drive and pay for - rather than buying and taxing and insuring a whole new one just for that purpose.

simpledeer · 01/03/2026 20:04

My aunt sort of did the opposite. She fell out with a neighbour who was always blocking her driveway and was very aggressive with her when she politely asked him not to.

So she bought the most hideous van, with a nasty graphic of a scantily clad woman on the side, and left it parked right outside the neighbours window. She managed to get it taxed and insured and re parked three years running! The neighbours were going insane trying to find out whose it was but of course it was all legal.

They moved eventually and DA then sold the van.
