To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

She can't order, but she can influence by parking there herself. After all, he doesn't own the road either.

She needs to just park on her driveway and get on with life. I DO understand the problem but this is never going to resolve.

WHY do I need to park on my driveway? WHY can’t they park on their driveway?

I’d do it, in fact I did the same many years ago when my neighbour parked a huge, high and very ugly van he had inexplicably painted BROWN right outside my living room window. I left the car there for over a year to preserve my view, and piss him off, which it did :)

I think this is the perfect solution. Especially if you are WFH and not moving for a few days.

sorryIdidntmeanto · 03/03/2026 16:51

I don't get it. You would buy, tax and insure a vehicle just to park outside your house, because you don't like vehicles being parked outside your house. It is another vehicle clogging up your road.

Uh, no, that's not it. If I parked my own car there, I'd make sure to leave enough room to pull my other car out. Other people don’t do this. They park all the way up to the dropped kerb, which makes it difficult for me to maneuver in and out of my driveway. Plus, a car is much smaller than a van, so I wouldn't be blocking my entire window or any view I have.

Not sure if you have this scheme in your area but we did the sponsor a new tree thing as got to pick placement we picked just slightly up from where our dropped curb ended to stop others parking right up to it !

cramptramp · 02/03/2026 09:33

I don’t spend a lot of time looking out of the window so couldn’t care less what is parked in front of my house.

OP does, which is what the thread is about.

TheCurious0range · 03/03/2026 17:11

You can apply to the council to widen your dropped curb or have a white bar painted on if it's making it dangerous for you to exit your drive, at least that's a one off cost

There are some very slow- thinking people posting here, OP.

Either that, or they're miffed that you have a house and can afford two cars but still think you should be entitled to a view from your living-room window.

GiggleWiggle246 · 03/03/2026 21:02

I’d do it. I’ve debated doing it a few times, I have a drive which is used by my partner to charge their electric vehicle so I park on the street. The neighbour opposite has 4 cars-driveway for 2. 2 belong to their children who have partners-who have cars. The NDN has 5 cars-driveway for 2 and the neighbour on the opposite side has 4 cars. I came home once to find her daughter’s partner had parked directly outside my house..and gone on holiday! 2 weeks it was left there, they could have parked it further down where it was out of the way but it left me without a space near enough every day!

Exactly. So many people are missing the point here! OR they have not had to suffer the same crap as you (and me, and some others on here!) It's exasperating. What kind of selfish, thoughtless, narrow minded oik does a person have to be to keep parking on the ROAD, opposite someone else's driveway, WHEN THEY HAVE THEIR OWN FECKING DRIVEWAY?!' 😡

Womaninhouse17 · 03/03/2026 21:09

I can understand that. You'd still have to tax it, even if you didn't drive it anywhere though. Do you think the expense would be worth it?

Bakerygirl · 03/03/2026 21:21

I have done this in the past. Doesn’t cost that much. The car was £550. It came with 12 months mot. Car tax was £30 and insurance £300. Obviously when you sell the car, you should get back pretty much what you paid. It is worth every penny to reduce the stress. Go for it!

Road tax doesn't have to be expensive, especially on a small petrol car.
Ours is only £20pa.
Insurance can also be cheap, admittedly you may be having to build a new NCD but you can insure it TP only and set the annual mileage as low as possible.

OnTheBoardwalk · 03/03/2026 23:25

Can you hire a cheap car and use that whilst your car is parked in the spot or park that in your spot? Maybe a friend could park there for a while?

I get your annoyance. Next door leave their drive free but use their 2 cars to take up 3 or 3.5 spaces in the road

Bones101 · 04/03/2026 00:29

My grandad was a superintendent so he did this. For safety reasons.

Get a grip.

People are really weird about parking. Ta a public road. You don’t own it.

But if you want to spend your money this way. Enjoy.

Have you read the original post? She's not being weird about it and she's aware she doesn't own the road. She explained why it's really annoying- I say go for it OP!

Edithdrix80 · 04/03/2026 05:47

Just get the cheapest 3rd party cover.

LakieLady · 04/03/2026 06:54

No need to buy a second car, just park your own car on the road outside your house instead of in your drive!

Tollington · 04/03/2026 07:11

If you bought a small trailer you wouldn’t have to tax, mot and insure it

Theroadt · 04/03/2026 07:28

People park opposite my front door (I have offroad parking to the side of house) which is super annoying when I need to park on Sunday with my 96yo father who barely walks. My neighbours know to avoid, but people think it’s safer for their car to be near a house (in terms of theft, I guess). Often they park up on the kerb, which makes the situation even worse. Ultimately though I do understand as highway they have the right to do it.

Thinking sbout this seems like the best plan. I’d also get a wheel clamp to insure it stays put. There has been a trailer parked on a street local to me for over a year.

OP, Sorry if this has been mentioned upthread. Do you know whether there are any covenant restrictions in your area?
I had a similar situation, very small front garden and works van parked outside constantly. The view from my window was a huge van.
I checked the covenant restrictions and they state that no company vehicles can be parked overnight or at weekends on the estate. I contacted the company that owned the van (large multinational) and explained that they were violating restrictions. I haven’t seen the van since!

Worth checking.

Tessasanderson · 04/03/2026 12:23

As with most of these threads. He is parking there because he can and its legal.

You are quite within your rights to buy a car and park it there. You can and its legal.

You could always escalate things a bit further and instead of buying a car, buy a huge van (You can usually get a knackered one with 12 months test on it cheap). Then park it right outside his house for 12 months......
