To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

Do it. Having to look at a giant ulgy van every day would piss me off too.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 01/03/2026 16:12

I didn’t but yes I wanted to. I am with u. People used to park just over enough that I couldn’t get out or sometimes turn left.
this was one of the main reasons I moved house. The amount of people that would park over my driveway and signal to me that they would only be a few mins as I couldn’t see them from my sofa.

plentyofsunshine · 01/03/2026 16:13

do it

AgnesMcDoo · 01/03/2026 16:19

People are really weird about parking. Ta a public road. You don’t own it.

But if you want to spend your money this way. Enjoy.

LlynTegid · 01/03/2026 16:22

If he cannot manoeuvre the vehicle into the drive, he must have poor eyesight or another reason not to hold a driving licence.

If he has an employer, they are failing in their health and safety responsibilities by not ensuring he is fit to drive, if it is a work vehicle.

If you looked out of my window, you would understand. That's all I can see.

If you had to park one of your vehicles outside your neighbours house, would you really pick a huge van over a small car? Yes they can park there, but there's also something known as courtesy.

I was going to do this last year.

Was willing to tax and mot.
But sorted it out with the neighbours and they don't park there anymore.
I absolutely understand.
As long as you can afford it go ahead.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/03/2026 16:36

We have talked about doing this! I wouldn’t blame you in the slightest.

He drives fine, but their driveway isn’t very big. They must have decided to stop using it completely and parked their car in front of their house while leaving the van outside mine. Why not the other way around?? I don't mind them parking there, but it’s pissed me off that they decided to put the van there instead of the car. It won't be a mistake either, they're petty as fuck and like making things awkward for everyone else, just as long as they don’t have to inconvenience themselves they don’t care.

Public space. Do it if you want to spend your money.

MsGreying · 01/03/2026 16:42

Because they declare their own car as being parked on a drive for insurance.
The work van is on work insurance and they don't care if you have to look at it because it didn't cross their mind.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 01/03/2026 16:43

I'd consider that a sound investment.

my parents neighbour did this. I regularly have to squeeze out my drive due to this. I don’t mind people parking on the street as they need to park somewhere- but if they just moved even 12 inches, it’d be a lot more considerate!

Seymour5 · 01/03/2026 16:45

I remember a neighbour of DDs who parked a big van right outside the window of the g/f flat in her block, leaving his drive clear, also the view from his window.

I thought it very selfish at the time. Buy the car OP!

Mithral · 01/03/2026 16:45

I wonder what the legal limits of this are? Do you think I could do this but have a sort of garden on the top of the car or something? I like the idea of growing sunflowers through the sunroof or something.

The car isn’t on the driveway. They don't even use it, so that doesn’t make sense. They’ve definitely thought about it. They just enjoy making things awkward for others and have always been like this.

You would have to tax and insure it

BlueMum16 · 01/03/2026 16:46

Can't you just park on the road?

Secretseverywhere · 01/03/2026 16:46

I wonder if it’d be cheaper to put a moped type thing rather than a car.

Another reason that we chose to live far from the madding crowd. I look out my windows and see trees, grass and sheep.

Why do people think they've got the right to park outside their house. They need to realise they don't.
