To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

Omg this is height of privileged world existence

faerylights · 01/03/2026 17:27

Sure, if you can tax, MOT and insure it every year, go for it.

Hhhwgroadk · 01/03/2026 17:27

We share a large area for parking cars outside our houses. I am dreading the day when/if they move. We have had lots of vehicles of various sizes belonging to trades (builders/electricians/plasterers etc) outside ours: Caravan, skip, several work vans, cars etc. We apologised to them. They looked at their parking arrangements and laughed: 4/6 cars plus vans, rellos, plus friends, hope you are happy here. There are no access problems at any time, and I have been in for coffee/wine a few times plus meals. Fun and laughter all round.

You need to choose to let go of this.

Ask yourself, what impact does the view of a van out of your window really have on your life.

You are privileged enough to live in a pretty safe country, to have a roof over your head, food in your fridge and to just generally be alive and healthy.

Let go of such a small and petty thing and focus on the positives in life.

If you looked out of my window, you would understand. That's all I can see.

If you had to park one of your vehicles outside your neighbours house, would you really pick a huge van over a small car? Yes they can park there, but there's also something known as courtesy.

I get it, I hate it when I have to stare at an AA van outside my window, it's so big and intrusive and that family have way more vehicles than adults that can drive in the household. There are plenty of other places to park that don't impact on others. It's just inconsiderate. So no, you don't own the road but equally who wants an ugly van blocking your light, especially if it's a garish colour!

Lol, nice try, it’s not about privilege. It’s about being considerate and respectful of others.

You want to park in front of someone’s house? Fine. Just leave some room for them to get in and out of their driveway without having to struggle.

Thinking of parking in front of your neighbours house for a long time while your own driveway sits empty? Fine. But why a massive van, and not the car? If you wouldn’t want a big van parked in front of your own house, why would your neighbours want that?

I would do it too.
They really are taking the piss.

Only joking, but why not buy a big ugly luminous green or better still bright pink van, and park it outside their house. See how they like it!

Bonkers1966 · 01/03/2026 17:40

That's a really good idea. Just make sure it looks functional as you don't want those feckers reporting it as potentially abandoned. Best of luck 🍀 🤞 😁

DeltaVariant · 01/03/2026 17:44

Park on their drive 🤣🤣🤣🤣

its a civil matter …

smooththecat · 01/03/2026 17:54

I did this. Asshole neighbour parked a giant motorhome outside my window. Was like living at the M5 lorry park.

PrettyPickle · 01/03/2026 17:55

I feel your pain, my neighbour has a drive for 4 cars but does not use it. However they park their small car outside their house to stop the guy across the road parking his work van outside their house because he won't park on his own drive either. Everybody then gets displaced and it has a knock on effect.

So my neighbour parks outside their house and when their kids come, do they part on her empty drive for 4 cars, no, they park out front and behind her, blocking the entrance to her drive and over egging ours and then her next visitor comes and parks outside ours but on the dropped kerb so we cannot get in or out of our drive without knocking at their door and hoping they will come now. My husband is on call and he has response times to adhere to.

When I have talked to them, all they say is, well you just have to ask us to move and I think, why should I have to as your big drive is empty because you can't be bothered negotiating it and chose to inconvenience me and others instead! And on the occasion I have, its been give me 10, just putting grandchild down or in middle of Sunday lunch......I don't care, shift it now!

But apparently I am mean, rude and inconsiderate.

Let me know if you find a workable outcome as I will follow suit.

Seelybe · 01/03/2026 17:56

@originalsst58 they are clearly doing it to cause you maximum aggravation.
Would a secondhand trailer do the job? No need for tax, mot and insurance and as long as it has night lighting and is immobilised would protect access to your dropped kerb.
Neighbour parking manners seem to be a thing of the past.

Newgirls · 01/03/2026 17:58

Do it! Far cheaper than moving

janietreemore · 01/03/2026 17:59

originalsst58 · 01/03/2026 17:05

No, it doesn’t stop me from getting out. I just don’t like it being my view every day. I wouldn’t have minded the car, but not a huge van, especially when their driveway is empty. I just think they’re utterly selfish. It’s the living room. I live in a bungalow, so can’t exactly go upstairs and look out the windows there instead!

So it's blocking the view from the only front window in your home? That must be unpleasant especially if the front garden is small or non existent. It's a reason for not living in a bungalow that I had not previously thought of!

Blueskiesnotgrey · 01/03/2026 18:01

Do it.

Rocknrollstar · 01/03/2026 16:46

You would have to tax and insure it

Did you read the OP? Actually mentions it in the first post!

Doesn't matter.
If it is road legal (tax, insurance, MOT etc) and parked legally, there is nothing anyone can do.
Even if it was reported as abandoned, the registered address would come up and be seen to be the house it is parked outside of..... case closed.

Yes, exactly that. That’s why I wouldn’t have minded the car because it’s smaller, not as tall, etc. But no, it has to be the van!

How are these people not embarrassed being such bad neighbours?

My neighbours go out of their way to be kind and thoughtful.

Uticary · 01/03/2026 18:13

Absolutely do it.

It is about privilege - as other poster said you live in safe country, have fresh safe water etc etc - worry about something worthy

you obviously can get out your drive or this would be a different post

it is sooooo privileged to buy a car not to use and just keep outside your house

I’m envious that this is your biggest worry in life

JonesTown · 01/03/2026 18:16

You sound unhinged. It is a public street and anyone with a vehicle is entitled to park it there.
