Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

People who say 'lay ' instead of 'lie'. For example, 'I had a lay down' or 'She was laying there.'

I'm not much of a pedant actually (feel free to point out any errors or typos) but the misuse of 'lay' is like nails on a blackboard for me!

People who rest their forearms and lean on the shopping trolley to steer it - unless they have a disability.

Why does it annoy you?

to look at me you wouldn't know I have a disability, but I do. I get an online delivery from Tesco (who are brilliant) but sometimes I just feel like getting something u fancy in person or having a look/walk around. It's rare I'm well enough to do it, but when I do I need to lean on the trolley sometimes (usually just pushing it/ holding onto it is enough, but not always.

i drive & I put on a good face when I'm out of the house, but in reality I'm in pain & struggling & get home exhausted from very little activity.

but you judge away & get annoyed ... it's fine. You'll be kess judgy if you ever find yourself disabled (invisibly) overnight as I did (literally).

Iliveonabighill · 20/02/2026 18:36

Putting plates in the kitchen sink to soak in water before putting them in the dishwasher.
If you have to rinse food off, just... rinse it off.

People who take Christmas decorations down on boxing day.

The idea annoys me but I’ve never been in house that does this ( because I’m either at home or with extended family).
However people that put decorations up in November make sure everyone sees them. They are completely transgressive and spoil it for everyone by being too early.

Transgressive 🤣🤣 do behave.

Whole families doing the food shop. The Mum pushing the trolley whilst various kids stand in it or run round and Dad just stands in the way and is as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Can he not just stay in the car with the kids or stay at home with them and keep out of mine and everyone else's way.

What a weird thing to be annoyed about. It's nice for families to do anything together including mundane stuff like shopping. I used to love going to the supermarket with my mum and dad as a kid and have fond memories of it.
Not all parents work the way you describe and not all men are useless. Some parents work as a team and my dad always pushes the trolley when shopping with my mum. We were very well behaved though and not allowed to run around!

Thinking of a great topic for this thread.
And then forgetting what it is.

JohnBullshit · 20/02/2026 19:27

Coming back to my small car, parked neatly in the middle of its space in the car park, only to find it's been invaded on both frontiers by a pair of monstermobiles which have strayed over the lines into my space, meaning I can't open my door without it touching someone else's bodywork. I annoy myself having imaginary arguments with drivers who don't actually come back to see me touch the precious gigantacars while I struggle to get into my little VW.

I never said all men are useless. And no, not all parents work the way I have described but I seem to encounter plenty that work the way I have described and it's bloody irritating!

And believe me. That's not the only weird thing that annoys me. There is plenty more!

Really annoying on so many levels.
Spikes on the white lines would be so useful.

The title is 'stupid' things that annoy you. That commenter knew it was a stupid thing. We can't help what annoys us, no matter how stupid they are.

You don't have to voice everything that crosses your mind. You could think about how it might make other people feel.

Worried198423 · 20/02/2026 21:41

Watching a Tik Tok about winning a tattoo if you're in the shop.
Also mentions alcohol.
Someone just asked can they bring their grandson who's 3.
It's OK though he'll be in his pram.

Equally you don’t need to get upset by someone’s inner thoughts.
We all look at people and think things about them, rightly or wrongly. Equally we all know our assumptions can be wrong.

I think this thread would be a bit bare if everybody did that.

I don't. The vast majority of posts are not aimed at something a disabled person can't help needing.

They aren't 'inner thoughts' when someone chooses to put them on an internet forum!

woukd it be ok if someone ousted something really racist because it's their 'inner thoughts'?

They are 'inner thoughts'. We have no idea what other people are thinking (unless we read threads like these). I'm sure there are plenty of people reading this and finding out that their tattoos/parking habits/fashion sense annoys other people - and just shrugging it off. It's amusing to learn how easily annoyed people can be by silly little things, and to realise that it really doesn't matter.

BurtsBeefCrisps · 21/02/2026 07:30

There’s so many!
Top would be;
wilful ignorance/cognitive dissonance about the state of society (links to us slowly sleep walking into a fascist government, like we did with Brexit). The fact we are stupid because we don’t learn. But primarily for many until it impacts their lives directly they honestly won’t care. Then when their SEND child suddenly has funding taken away or their local takeaway closes because the owners have been kicked out they’ll be a slow realisation that they’ve screwed themselves. And they will blame everyone but themselves.
So, long and short of it, many do not care until a situation directly impacts them, alongside fact that everyone has become so grabby ‘each for themselves’.
i swear it wasn’t always like this.

I hear you on this.

I was brought up in this type of family. Mum didn't drive, dad worked mon - fri so on a Saturday they would both sleep in until about mid day then we would all go to the supermarket.

We were hungry (not allowed to use the cooker without supervision) we sometimes made toast holding the toast on a fork to the gas fire - if you want to punish your kids, get them to make toast this way.

So I'm sure my brother and I were cranky and hungry and not interested in which brand of beans to buy.

Worried198423 · 21/02/2026 14:06

Parents who have kids and their names don't "go" together.
Like Mary,John and then Beyonce.
Has no bearing on my life but it annoys me.

not so much now. But my old local supermarket is very popular with holidaymakers using local campsites. it was a nightmare on a wet day when it wasn’t a beach day. Entire families no knowing what they want for tea as it wasn’t bbq weather. And the whole family in tow because it’s the family holiday. Didn’t know where anything was as unfamiliar shop. And because they had nothing else to do apart from go back to a wet tent no sense of urgency.

Fashion sense/parking/tattoos are not the same. They're a choice, being disabled is not.
