Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

As for substantiating the claim…haitch is taught in Irish schools, not aitch. A local child saying aitch would be corrected.
So what? I'm not in Ireland.

Yes, but Northern Ireland is part of the UK was my point. Many people there say haitch as standard.
It’s not a mistake in parts of the UK.

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 20:17

@Butteries. They can say it how they like, if they're in NI, it affects me not one jot.

Butterties · 19/02/2026 20:22

That’s fine, just please don’t think they’re wrong.

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 20:31

I can think what I like.

People using their phones while walking.

I find Chester draws funny.

Chester drawers.

I find that ironic when you’re behaving like a grammar police officer in this thread and berating people for not using the correct spelling of words.

The secondary lids on plastic milk bottles

Phone chargers/USB cables that require you to put them in 3 times in 3 different ways before they’ll do their damn jobs

Getting yeeted back into a room you’re trying to leave by catching a sleeve/pocket on a door handle

Regarding the yeeted back into the room thing, if you were actually storming out / dramatically turning on your heel / striding out after denouncing the murderer, it is so annoying to have to return and unhook yourself that you might actually explode!!!!

I appreciate this is a diamond shoe thing but I like gossard underwear. It is not super expensive but I like it. The have a like metal italic g on the front of their bras and knickers. By god does that thing mess with your washing machine, it is the perfect size and shape to attatch into a drum hole. I find it sad that I have to cut something off my new underwear when I buy it.

I hear you with the dog crap. I walk with my head down.
People typing "alot," "abit," "aswell" etc.
Chester draws.
Tounge instead of tongue.

Noone instead of no one 🤯

People who rest their forearms and lean on the shopping trolley to steer it - unless they have a disability.

I have to do this as I have a chronic illness that causes fatigue but you wouldn’t know that.

ChristmasChroniclesBookFairie · 19/02/2026 22:05

@Womaninhouse17 reading your comment makes me realise I didn't explain that point correctly. I am a careful driver. I was referring to a couple of situations I found myself in recently.

1 - I am going around a roundabout and someone to my left (waiting to join roundabout) suddenly pulls out in front of me forcing me to emergency brake.

2.- I was driving at 30 mph along a straight main road. Boy racer pulls out from a small side road (behind a give way marking) forcing me to emergency brake.

People who say they don't vote, watch the news or know what's happening in the world because it's "too depressing." Literally none of my business and they're probably a lot happier and less anxious than I am, but it drives me insane as I think it's the height of ignorance.

Lol, you think you're informed because you watch the news?😂

Buddinghell · 19/02/2026 22:28

People who take Christmas decorations down on boxing day.

The idea annoys me but I’ve never been in house that does this ( because I’m either at home or with extended family).
However people that put decorations up in November make sure everyone sees them. They are completely transgressive and spoil it for everyone by being too early.

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 22:44

@UnhappyHobbit I'm not doing anything of the sort.

I can find Chester draws funny. It's so obviously a chest of drawers. It's a Custardy Sergeant sort of funny.

LadyCrustybread · 19/02/2026 22:47

When you ask someone a question and they answer a completely different question. I know I used the correct words… so what has gone wrong here?

One particular lecturer at my university does is all the time. And not just to me. Just constantly misunderstands what people are asking and it drives me crackers because then she gets annoyed when they try to rephrase because she’s convinced she’s answered them.

Also there’s a cycle path directly across the entrance to my road. Cuts right across it. And the cyclists never seem to care that I need to walk across it to get home.

Why not just buy a few lingerie bags tgat you can put them in, in the machine?

I know I do this, because it drives DH nuts, and he’s probably the only person impolite enough to tell me so 😂 If he asks me what time the post office opens, I’ll reply “do you need a stamp?” If he asks if he should book a table at the Red Lion for when we meet Mark and Claire, I’ll respond “are you coming from the office that day?” Always solutions focussed, me.

Tv dramas that rely on text messages on occasion. So that the vital clue is shown on the actual phone screen .Its always fleetingly and , in my case ,15 foot away (if I was actually watching the screen at the time).
Subtitles dont help in this instance.
There are other ways to carry the storyline forward that dont rely on the audience being eagle eyed .

That drives me mad too, and often the text is so tiny.

People who cross the road, half jogging, looking at you driving along and then when they get half way turn their head so they can't see me o therefore I can't knock them down.

@GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf my parents had a loop system for the TV. I'm not entirely sure how it worked but my dad could watch a football match with loud commentary in his ears and my mum could read in silence.

People who don't know what the word 'aggravate' means.
(I realise I may well have already lost this battle. And I wouldn't normally comment but it's a small, silly thing as per the thread title, it does irritate me and it is relevant )

People who comment on threads about the OP’s spelling, grammar, punctuation, use of a word etc etc

Butterties · 20/02/2026 10:11

The pp was wrong anyway @justhowdoyouknow. There was nothing wrong about using ‘aggravate’ in the sense OP did.

If you're writing for thousands of people to read, these things are important to get right. We all learn as we go. It's helpful to make sure you don't make the same error again.

People who call holidays holibobs. It really really irritates me. I know it's trivial 🤷‍♀️

Luvmusic · 20/02/2026 13:47

I'm loving this post, laughing at my own absurdity as well as others.
However, I still think you should all put the loo lid down before flushing! Yuk, think of the germ infested spray. 😁

@Worried198423

Talking of subtitles.
When they don't match with what's being said onscreen.
They miss whole lines of dialogue in subtitles.
It really cannons me,as I depend on the subtitles being accurate

This is a deliberate choice because of the demands of subtitling. I read an interesting article about subtitling in relation to the first series of Squid Game subtitles. Basically it is a very skilled art and the people writing subtitles have to balance getting across the information in a subtitle that both relates to the dialogue but also can be read at speed as the dialogue moves on. There is only so much text your brain can take in so it often can't be word for word as it would be too long.

It was interesting in relation to Squid Game because the English subtitles for the English language dubbed version were different from the English subtitles for the Korean language version. This is because they related to different dialogue - one was a subtitle of the Korean speaking reduced to text. The other was a subtitle of the English language translation reduced to text - so it's gone through two processes.

The conclusion was if you are watching a foreign language film or tv prog and it is an option to watch it dubbed, you are usually better off watching it in the original language with English subtitles because it will give you a more accurate and closer feel to the original.
