Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

Thanks and you're completely correct with your last sentence.
But I've worked out that the best revenge I can have on them is to ignore them and actually look through them as though they're not there, when they try to force eye contact.
Originally I was distraught and even my GP was disgusted when I told her and it was her who advised me to get a cease and desist letter from my solicitor (as they were harrassing me daily at that point) but speaking loudly about it within their earshot was enough to get them to stop.
Now I make sure to be smiling when I go outside or near the window (even if I don't feel like it) as it really bugs them and I concentrate on new things in my life now x

I'm glad you're able to do that & feel in control of the situation now, but they're still vile ! You shouldn't have to 💕

Baby on Board signs walked so that Princess on Boards signs could run!

My husband wouldn't have one, he said they were targets for psychopaths.

People saying stepping foot when it's setting foot.

Wide pavements with both a cycle path and a footpath where the footpath is nearer the road than the cycle path.

As a pedestrian I'm obviously moving at a slower speed than cyclists so in proximity to traffic fumes for longer and want to be as far away from traffic as possible but the layout means I should be walking in between the traffic and the bikes.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/04/2026 10:50

I suspect that the difference in exposure to traffic fumes if the cycle path is between you and the cars and the opposite arrangement is minimal, if at all, @Mochudubh. I honestly wouldn't worry.

Mochudubh · 27/04/2026 16:07

Probably, but I instinctively want to walk to the inside of the pavement, away from the traffic and in practice I do but it means that I'm walking in the cycle lane. I do try to walk as close to the side as possible so bikes can still pass me. The cycle lane is about 5 feet wide.

It’s usually safer for pedestrians because the other way around means pedestrians having to walk over the cycle lane to cross over the road or approach a bus stop / get off the bus. There’s a stretch of my cycle route to work where the cycle path is on the outer half of the pavement which can be a bit dicey as people waiting for the bus will stand or sit on the wall at the far side of the pavement and then often dart forward into the cycle lane without looking for bicycles when they see their bus approaching.

TheignT · 30/04/2026 11:23

Where I live the path is quite narrow when divided and the cycle lane is nearer the road which means the pedestrian part gets all the bushes and weeds overgrowing the path. There are bits where the usable part of the pedestrian part is so narrow you have to walk in single file and can still get caught by the nettles. It leads to a primary school and I feel sorry for the parents with buggies and young children trying to get to the school. Not sure what the answer is.

Since I’ve just seen it on here, an eternity ring referred to as a ‘band’. Ditto wedding ‘bands’. Since when did they stop being rings?

People who talk about Trump like he gives a shit what you think about him

People who talk about the royal family in the same way

People who live through the news instead of real life

People who think they know things they don't know, refuse to learn, and argue to maintain their ignorant stance

People who are jealous of the material possessions of others and do nothing about their own situation

People who...oh, ffs, just people, I think
