Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

People staring at their phones while walking when they have young children with them, I see a man every morning that does this and the kids are just running ahead and he's ignoring them.
People writing "should of" "could of".
Calling a baby "bubs" sounds awful and I hate it.
People saying "no offence" when about to say something offensive or already have done, saying "no offence" doesn't get you out of being awful to someone.
Dog crap on pavements, it's everywhere and I find myself staring at the floor constantly to avoid wheeling my pram/standing in it.

I hear you with the dog crap. I walk with my head down.
People typing "alot," "abit," "aswell" etc.
Chester draws.
Tounge instead of tongue.

I forgot about Chester drawers 😂 let's just add that to the list.

Would of, could of, should of - I understand why people make this mistake, but it does annoy me.

I agree with @Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun about stupid car names. There's a parent on the school run with a Jaecoo, and every time I see it written across it's stupid boxy face it makes me irrationally angry!

Exactly. And Dacia Dusters. That's cleaning.

Was that in their Range Rover?

some bloke near me did this. He apparently took a wrong turn? Attempted ti drive through the food (that looked more like the Thames!
needed the police & fire service to rescue him. 🙄🙄. I'd love to see his insurers reply to his claim!!

yes it's annoying having hi the long way around to get into the village & yes. Maybe he took a strong turn & found himself at the Ford, but FFS why would you drive your £80,000 Range Rover into it? Dickhead.

,

Oooo we've had it all this year at our village one. Erm 7 5t, jeep and Asda food van off the top of my head. Ours has two height indicators I think people see the first one and think it's fine (you'd think the flooded footpath next to you would give you a hint) but don't think to look at the second one where the road dips down. Second indicator was at over a metre the last time something got stuck like seriously why why why? We have signs saying "do not cross in flood" these people live amongst us and breed!

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 13:55

People using their phones while walking.

I find Chester draws funny.

@elliejjtiny , That's the sort of thing my mother does although not to the same degree.
I could never tell her I was going for a smear test or something because she'd tell everyone. No filter.

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud , People on here correcting people's spelling
Sometimes there's an autocorrected word that changes the meaning of the post, and telling the poster might mean they get a chance too edit their post.

I understand what you mean. I'm talking about whether they spell whether as weather, you still get the gist of what the poster is trying to articulate and it seems petty/nasty sometines that someone who is going through some truama needs a lesson on spelling 😁

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 14:40

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud , weather for whether is probably due to the autocorrect feature. I think I saw an instance where bursaries was corrected to nurseries and that wasn't an obvious autocorrect failure.

Page 4 | Is my boyfriend making excuses not to buy a house with me? | Mumsnet

Someone pointed it out and it was corrected.

I don't think there was any trauma involved.

Friends snd family sending me reels to watch. I don’t bother watching them as it irritates me

GreenCa · 19/02/2026 16:37

People who rest their forearms and lean on the shopping trolley to steer it - unless they have a disability.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/02/2026 16:41

Maybe they are just knackered, or their back is hurting, @GreenCa.

FunnyOrca · 19/02/2026 16:45

When people say something cruel kind of jokingly, but they really mean it. It’s just nasty.

Worried198423 · 19/02/2026 16:48

Bill splitting.
I'll split if we have the same,I won't split if you've had steak and oysters

Yeah, worrying isn't it that they drive among us & are allowed to have kids 😳🤯

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 13:18

Haitch might be correct where you are but it's frowned on in Standard British English. It's like nails down a blackboard as far as I am concerned.
We're not getting at you personally but the argument that it is correct becomes tiresome.

Where I'm from saying that someone looks well means they've put on weight, but I've learnt that outside my local area 'You're looking well' is not someone fat-shaming me.

There is more than one form of standard English within the UK though.

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 18:55

@Butterties , what I referred to was Standard British English not standard English.

I know. My point is that Standard British English isn’t the standard throughout the UK. What about Scottish Standard English for example, or Hiberno-English?

Just because a word (eg haitch in this case) is considered Standard British English, that doesn’t mean it’s the standard everywhere within the UK. I just think people should acknowledge that, instead of considering the standard of other places within the UK to be wrong or like nails down a blackboard.

AlbieJiggered · 19/02/2026 19:19

I'm not convinced that haitch is correct in Scotland.
When you've been brought up and taught to believe that it is not correct, and have seen no proof to the contrary, you will believe it to be incorrect.

Butterties · 19/02/2026 19:33

No, it’s standard in Hiberno-English. Haithh/aitch was (is?) a shibboleth in NI.

You might change your mind now though?

Not on the word of some random person on a forum.

YourGreenCat · 19/02/2026 19:38

People who use AI to answer a question.

"ChatGPT says..."
Thanks, the OP could have used it themselves if they wanted to, it's the most unhelpful infuriating answer 😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/02/2026 19:39

In Scotland J is pronounced J-eye, not jay - this confused the dses when we moved here from Essex!

Sure, understand that. It’s very easy to look up though if you wish.

As for substantiating the claim…haitch is taught in Irish schools, not aitch. A local child saying aitch would be corrected.

So what? I'm not in Ireland.
