Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

Fashion sense/parking/tattoos are not the same. They're a choice, being disabled is not.

Edited

It doesn't make any difference because they are inner thoughts. I could have cited hair colour or accents or other things that aren't a choice. We're all human and have irrational likes and dislikes. As long as we don't voice our inner thoughts in inappropriate places, it's fine. A thread on MN about stupid things that annoy you is just the right place to voice them. If you don't want to know other people's stupid thoughts, don't read threads like these.

Buddinghell · 23/02/2026 22:03

The poster wasn’t annoyed by anyone’s disability though.
Loud people annoy me. I can totally see the young woman shouting in the swimming pool has a disability.Which is why I don’t tell her to shut up. But actually I wouldn’t tell anyone to shut up because it’s a free country and some people are just loud.
Thats the point of this thread … they are stupid things that you don’t say out loud because they are stupid.

…but the poster literally excluded those with disabilities from her judgment. You’re stretching to the extreme here.

The person who rang me in work last week to tell me they were running late for a meeting and would arrive at 45 minutes past 8! What!! I said do you mean quarter to 9, he repeated he would arrive at 45 minutes past 8!

Yeah & how does she think she'd know if someone was disabled or not??

im not stretching, im pissed off with being judged for being 'lazy or uncouth' when I'm actually disabled.

Other people's stupid thoughts are fine. Being annoyed due to someone's disability, not fine.

no more fine than being racist, except on MN where being ableist is fine.

ThatFairy · 23/02/2026 23:43

I don't understand why something like this would make you so angry. I have real things to deal with in life that upset me.

thaisweetchill · 23/02/2026 23:49

Drivers that flash/let you go for no reason. Hear me out… waiting to turn out of a junction and one car driving that road, they flash you to let you go when there’s hardly any traffic behind them so you could easily turn out once they’ve passed you… why?! Just continue driving and I will pull out as per the Highway Code!

Being annoyed by something you shouldn't be annoyed by is, by definition, a stupid thought. And noone is saying they are being annoyed by someone's disability.

Well, I posted it in the appropriate place, didn't I?! (And it is a word but a non-standard spelling of it. Also, was probably a typo...)

Not everyone hanging out of the trolley had a disability.

I agree, @FrozenFebruary.

And is it ‘uncouth’ to be knackered and need a bit extra support on one particular occasion? I don’t think so.

AddictedToBooks · 24/02/2026 14:28

The two sets of busybodies on my street - they're next door neighbours to each other and have lived on this Close longer than any of the rest of us and they really think they're superior.

In one house you have the woman who is the actual dictionary definition of a hag, she scowls at absolutely everyone and believes that only she knows the truth about people on the street (for example I'm in remission for blood cancer and I didn't have chemo as that wasn't the correct treatment for me - instead I had to go for regular infusions and also full blood transfusions, so she told everyone else that I didn't have cancer and had lied about it (now I'd have sort of understood it more if I was doing a GoFundMe or something, but I had never asked anyone for ANYTHING, not even help)
Her husband is a vile little man who is at the window as soon as any vehicle or person enters the street and he'll rush out with his little bobbing bald head and his busybody march and he'll "garden" or "wash the windows" but really everyone knows he's eavesdropping and nosying - they even have two cameras on the front of their house.
I have a secondary illness (spinal stenosis) which came on very slowly and has changed me from working full-time, going out and having an active life etc to being housebound and needing walking aides whenever I step outside and sometimes indoors too and I've had to give up driving, all of my interests and working which was emotionally really hard - I had to go through a long process to get some of the support I needed and passed the criteria to have a disabled bay - Vinegar Face and Puffing Percy (the neighbours mentioned above) BOTH came out as the contractors were here and physically tried to stop them from painting the disabled bay because "we don't believe she's disabled".

Their next door neighbour literally treats me as her own reality TV show - every time I glance out, she's at her window watching - especially when I'm struggling to do the bins (which really aggravates my intense chronic pain) but she never offers to help.

I think she's hardwired to hear a gnat fart and she'll be up at the window!

Oooh OP, that turned into quite the rant and I feel better for it.

I'm sorry about you health situations & very sorry you have such vile neighbours! It's the last thing you need when your life is turned upside down & your future changed beyond recognition! 🤗

Not mocking at all. I was making a light-hearted comment to the person who made a similarly light-hearted comment about a spelling. You need to grow a thicker skin and stop thinking everything is about you.

You need to stop being so ableist, 'spelling disabled' 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

& telling someone disabled they just need to grow a thicker skin, really ? Maybe twats need to stop being twats ? Just a thought.

We have limited on street parking and it INFURIATES me when this happens. I’m at the stage where if I see someone park and leave a big gap from the end but just not enough to fit a car I’ll be saying something.

The spelling remark was a joke. It wasn't aimed at you or even addressed at you. It was a joke at my own expense. You have no idea who I am or what disabilities I might have and yet you have been consistently aggressive and now abusive. Just stop.

Thanks and you're completely correct with your last sentence.
But I've worked out that the best revenge I can have on them is to ignore them and actually look through them as though they're not there, when they try to force eye contact.
Originally I was distraught and even my GP was disgusted when I told her and it was her who advised me to get a cease and desist letter from my solicitor (as they were harrassing me daily at that point) but speaking loudly about it within their earshot was enough to get them to stop.
Now I make sure to be smiling when I go outside or near the window (even if I don't feel like it) as it really bugs them and I concentrate on new things in my life now x
