To think the test must be wrong

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 16:37

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

I'm not going to offer advice or comments. Just support for whatever you decide to do. I took the morning after pill at the age of 42 after an accident with condoms (before vasectomy date) because I couldn't handle the thought of a 4th pregnancy and child, with a greater risk of disability due to my age. I thought another child could genuinely kill me and would possibly destroy my family.

Whatever you choose to do will be the right thing to do.

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

It’s never a good idea to have a baby you don’t want.

Yes, it’s ’the truth’ but does it make it okay?

Yes. It does make it OK.

A lot of people find it distasteful to be careless with contraception and think ‘I’ll just have a termination’. But OP is nearly 50 years old, it’s not unreasonable to think you aren’t fertile at that point (even though she was mistaken). She’s quite worried, so it’s not a case of being irresponsible, she just didn’t know it would ever happen.

Hankunamatata · 17/02/2026 11:15

Sorry you got caught out op

Gp always say contraption for at least a year after last bleed.

Noshowlomo · 17/02/2026 11:18

Sending you love x

Catwalking · 17/02/2026 11:28

Regret to have to say, I did know an acquaintance’s DM was 50 when she gave birth to this person.
I hope you reach a good conclusion today.💐💐💐

I agree, there are circumstances where termination is necessary, but I can’t stand how blasé people are about it - termination isn’t a form of contraception. (I’m not referring to the OPs current situation).

SoSoLong · 17/02/2026 11:32

No idea about HRT and false positives, but I had a false positive aged 48 and in peri. Apparently it's not unusual for hormonal changes in perimenopause to cause false positives. But chances are, you are genuinely pregnant.

But you've got options, so chin up and go to a clinic. Good luck!

longtompot · 17/02/2026 11:39

Ignoring a few less than helpful posts, thankfully the worst ones have been removed, there is some genuine love and support for you @chillidoritto I too hope you were able to, if not sleep, then get some rest last night, and today will be able to start to get some answers to help you decide what you want to do 💐

Destiny123 · 17/02/2026 11:44

It's really common to concieve perimenopausally there's a bit of a peak then. And a big surge in abortions at that time as people stop being as careful. I've never heard of hrt causing false pregnancy tests, only weird one u come across is men that have positive tests can have testicular cancers secreting it

Maybe you should have made that clear, or started another thread about that topic.

No, it's not a form of contraception - it doesn't stop a conception happening.
What you mean is birth control, I think.
You can't stand people being blase about it? Maybe others don't like your opinion, so it goes both ways.
I agree - start another thread if you want an abortion debate.
This one is about supporting and advising this woman in her situation.

hepsitemiz · 17/02/2026 12:09

Dear OP, unthinkable that you've been given a rough ride at this worrying time.

I wish you lots of serenity and rl support in whatever you decide.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 17/02/2026 12:15

Who needs men when woman can tear other woman down like this?! I'm sure the OP knows she's made a mistake. Its an easy one to make though, and whatever you decide will be the right thing for you OP.
I'd be inclined to go to one of the high street scanning places to get an idea of dates, you can ask them not to show you the screen if thats your preference.

chillidoritto · 17/02/2026 12:21

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Most of you have been a massive source of comfort.

The GP saw me immediately and, due to my age, referred me to the EPAU. They confirmed the pregnancy, thankfully only 6 weeks so I can have a medical termination.

For anyone who ever finds themself in my situation, NOT ONE medical professional I saw was judgemental or anything other than sympathetic. They all agreed I have been extremely unlucky and that the pregnancy was unlikely to progress anyway.

I have booked an appointment at the clinic later and hopefully will be given the tablets.

It is the right decision, not just for me but for our family.

Ladies in the peri, please learn from my mistake. I was told that because I have had so many children, I may be fertile for a little longer than other women, which I hadn’t realised.

Im so glad you were dealt with compassionately and promptly.

SonsRfab · 17/02/2026 12:26

So glad you've been seen and have s plan @chillidoritto ❤️

Cardomomle · 17/02/2026 12:29

That's a good outcome, OP. I hope it goes smoothly from here.
Don't berate yourself - it was a mistake, you were unlucky. The pregnancy probably wouldn't have gone to term or been problem free anyway.
Best of luck 💐

Celynfour · 17/02/2026 12:30

Another voice to say I am glad compassion, empathy and prompt action were your experience .
Sorry to see anyone who finds the time to type message of judgement to another woman.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/02/2026 12:31

Big hug and a handhold, OP, a very difficult situation to be in. I'm glad the doctors you saw were supportive.

MadMadMad · 17/02/2026 12:34

Glad they were able to see you promptly and that it can be dealt with quickly.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/02/2026 12:34

Good luck, OP. I hope it passes quickly and painlessly for you.

diddl · 17/02/2026 12:35

Glad that you could see your Gp quickly & hope all goes well.
