To think the test must be wrong

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 16:37

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

Glad that you were seen so promptly. Sending you very best wishes.

BuckChuckets · 17/02/2026 12:41

Glad you were seen and can go through the process ASAP. Also a good lesson for me, my coil is due to come out when I'm 50, and I've always thought well I won't need to worry about pregnancy after that, this is a reminder that it's not impossible!

queenofwandss · 17/02/2026 12:43

I am so glad you have had good care thus far, wishing you a speedy recovery and please look after yourself. Flowers

fetchacloth · 17/02/2026 12:47

@chillidoritto thanks for the update and am pleased that you're getting the right help promptly. As I commented further up the thread, my GP was very firm about contraception during the peri and I wouldn't have known that myself if I hadn't discussed HRT with the GP.

Jaffalemons · 17/02/2026 12:48

Well done OP, a tough but sensible decision.

Change of life babies are very common.

I hope it all goes ok.

Muffsies · 17/02/2026 12:48

I'm so pleased that you have received swift, compassionate healthcare, as it should be.

Thank you for sharing, so many women will have benefitted. Knowledge breaks down fear and misunderstanding.

Sending strenghth, admiration, and very best wishes to you and your family.

FlorenceAndTheSewingMachine · 17/02/2026 12:55

I hope you are ok, what a shock, glad you have a supportive husband, take it easy and get your husband the snip as you obviously have a very loving and healthy relationship x

MiddleAgedDread · 17/02/2026 12:56

Goodness, this is definitely a wake up call! Hoping all goes well for you and glad you got seen so quickly.
I think the fertile for longer thing is maybe because you’ve been pregnant and not releasing eggs for that time.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 17/02/2026 12:58

I hope it’s not too bad for you. Your decision is right for you and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Lots of hugs xx

Floundering66 · 17/02/2026 13:14

Oh wow! I feel for you, that must be such a shock at 49. Clearly not what you want so hoping it’s a false positive for you. Fertility is a crazy thing…

Thanks, just seen!

blondebombsite13 · 17/02/2026 13:21

So sorry @chillidorittobut I’m very glad you have been seen so quickly and seen such supportive professionals.

It’s not pleasant to go through but I think they are right that it would be unlikely to progress anyway.

so sorry, hope you are able to take it easy x

DowntonCrabby · 17/02/2026 13:35

Great that they’ve sorted things quickly for you @chillidoritto and the HCP’s have all been compassionate and professional.

I hope the next couple of days goes smoothly for you and you’re able to just take things easy and be kind to yourself. FlowersFlowers

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

Af 50 with 5 already? Id say yes unless desperately wanted and planned for. 60 with a 10 year old?

Castlespring · 17/02/2026 13:46

Sending hugs OP.
Just because it is the right decision for you, doesnt necessarily mean it's an easy one so look after yourself.
Even if is an easy decision because you know it's the right one for you, be kind to yourself.
X

SidewaysOtter · 17/02/2026 13:49

I’m glad you’ve met with help and compassion.

I read recently that the fastest growing age group of women having terminations is late 40s/50s because women think that peri menopause/almost complete menopause, using HRT or simply age means pregnancy isn’t possible. So you are not alone in your position.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Most of you have been a massive source of comfort.

The GP saw me immediately and, due to my age, referred me to the EPAU. They confirmed the pregnancy, thankfully only 6 weeks so I can have a medical termination.

For anyone who ever finds themself in my situation, NOT ONE medical professional I saw was judgemental or anything other than sympathetic. They all agreed I have been extremely unlucky and that the pregnancy was unlikely to progress anyway.

I have booked an appointment at the clinic later and hopefully will be given the tablets.

It is the right decision, not just for me but for our family.

Ladies in the peri, please learn from my mistake. I was told that because I have had so many children, I may be fertile for a little longer than other women, which I hadn’t realised.

No reason for them to be judgemental, you don’t deserve that.

Hope all goes well and this is all over swiftly for you.

Be kind to yourself.

Yes, it’s ’the truth’ but does it make it okay?

Yes. It does make it okay. That you don't like how some people think, feel and talk about abortion is a you problem, not an anyone else problem. To be blunt, no one cares that you feel some people are insufficiently distressed and tormented by abortion. People are blasé and you can't stand it? So what?

chillidoritto · 17/02/2026 14:06

I feel truly hideous, physically and mentally. But I’m certain I’m doing the right thing. I have DD who is a teenager but still wonderful, followed by 4 boys, so I have a huge amount on my plate already.

DD has figured that I’m not myself. She knew I was going to the doctors and said “hey you’re not pregnant are you mum”. I just told her no and that it was “my age” ie the peri. She replied “just as well cos you’d probably have triplet boys this time!”

When all this is done I am going to have serious words with DH about having the snip!

Cardomomle · 17/02/2026 14:11

You're bound to feel awful. Just take care of yourself. Plus - yes to the snip!

SchrodingersParrot · 17/02/2026 14:11

When all this is done I am going to have serious words with DH about having the snip!

Why wait till then? Is there any reason why he shouldn't have it done sooner rather than later?

FYI, sperm can still linger in the tubes for a little while after the op, so you'll still need to take precautions until he's had the all-clear. HTH

Pistachiocake · 17/02/2026 14:11

While it is true that younger women are more likely to get pregnant (my gynae told me 25 is the best age, and I was older than that!), there are many women in their 50s who do. It bothers me that we call women up to 46 "childbearing age", because from reading certain parts of the media, you'd think no woman in her 5s ever gives birth. Obviously some choose not to, but that doesn't mean they can't.
It could be a false positive, but either way, see your doctor.

Muffsies · 17/02/2026 14:12

Frog-march DH to the docs if you have to. I've had two sterilisations done bc my partner didn't want to get snipped (he's a big, squeemish baby). Guess why i had to have it done twice?
