Luge is feet first.

eurochick · 13/02/2026 19:17

Feet first v head first

Do they have any protective clothing? On one of the ski events it mentioned them wearing an airbag.

No, they appear to be wearing leotards with legs

And a helmet of course. Safety first and all

why are you watching if it's making you anxious ? think of your mental health op.

FFS.

Notashamed13 · 13/02/2026 19:30

Did it win? (The skeleton) 😁

Noseybear38 · 13/02/2026 19:31

It is interesting that the sprinters that turn to winter sports end up in the bobsleigh and not the Skeleton Bob. Montell Douglas aka Fire and also Phantom were sprinters come
bobsleighers.

We are pretty good at identifying talent in the UK and getting them into the right sport. Helen Glover was a county level hockey player before becoming a double gold medalist in rowing. Rebecca Romero turned to cycling after her sculling career.

We're not even finished yet, the final is later so the Skeleton stil has a chance. Although muscle control is quite poor.

Im now watching people snowboard into the air

And apparently on iplayer is ice skating but I want to watch both!!!!

The one I think is insane is double luge!

Notashamed13 · 13/02/2026 19:32

I'm from SW and I believe there is a self taught "skeltonist" from Bath who figured quite highly at either the last or one before WO....scary but fair play!

Notashamed13 · 13/02/2026 19:34

Alas, I'm poorly in bed with black screen thunder on the TV for sleeping so will have to rely on everyone's commentary until reading sends me to sleep 😴

The most bonkers of them all. The bottom one must be squashed!

YellingAway · 13/02/2026 19:37

Yes the double luge is insane, how do you decide who’s on top?

newornotnew · 13/02/2026 19:38

NutButterOnToast · 13/02/2026 18:52

There's no youth pathway, they're often poached from athletics (long jump, sprint events) as they need to run fast at the start.

Presumably because you can't really encourage children to launch themselves headfirst down an ice slope.

edwinbear · 13/02/2026 19:39

Iwouldlikesomecake · 13/02/2026 18:59

My friend does it- at university level there’s like ‘training camps’ where they take people good at sport and see if they’d be good at other random sports and that’s how she got into it. If you watch their uk training they don’t train on ice!

I’m going to tell 16y old DS this! He’s a good middle distance runner but no Josh Kerr. Maybe his future is in skeleton and he just doesn’t know it yet 🤣. He’s looking at potential Unis now - I’ll advise him to look for ones that offer more obscure sports he can have a crack at 😁

Sounds like Bath should top the list!!

The half pipe is reminding me of a ski holiday I took when I was newly pregnant with DD - but wasn’t actually aware I was pregnant at that point. I ventured into the half pipe on my snow board fancying myself as a bit of a trickster. I think I made it about 1/4 of the way up one side, before tentatively sliding back down again and shuffling all the way through the middle to the end. Whilst DH pissed himself laughing, taking unflattering photos. Luckily DD survived the ordeal. How these people get to the top of the thing is beyond me - let alone all the jumping about without cracking your head open on the way back down to earth.

DapperDame · 13/02/2026 19:57

bookworm14 · 13/02/2026 18:55

This makes sense as so much of it seems to be about who can get the quickest start. I wonder how the British guys train - presumably abroad as there wouldn’t be the facilities in the UK?

They train at Bath uni on a non-ice track I understand

And just why?! the double luge is possibly the most puzzling of all 😂

I used to play SSX on the PlayStation and it’s my delusion that I could totally do all the tricks on the half pipe, despite never stepping foot on a ski slope in my life.

Confusedmermaid1 · 13/02/2026 20:02

DH reckons he would rather do skeleton than luge but I would 100% rather break my legs than my neck.. gives me palpitations just thinking about 80mph head first 🫣

It makes us chuckle as though they’ve panicked about where to put them so they’ve just sectioned off an area of the portacabin and taped up some kids drawings 😂

ApolloandDaphne · 13/02/2026 20:05

I am loving the half pipe. I have no idea how the commentators can tell what they are doing. Double aleeoop, 1200, switch.Honestly all looks the same to me. Yeet up the air, twizzle around and try not to land on your head.

John Hunt usually does horse racing. After all he has been through it is great to hear him in commentating on a very big event.
