Amazon should reimburse me right?

Ordered protein bars (16). Came yesterday. Best before limit date 03.2026. Seriously? So in a couple of weeks. Tried to return but they wouldn't have it- since it's "food" you can't return- safety reasons I get this. But shouldn't they atleast reimburse me- I mean I bought these to have for atleast 4 months.

YANBU - Ofcourse you should be reimbursed!

YABU- Just hurry up and eat them all before March.

I'm taking 03/2026 to be the END of March which is nearly 2 months. That's the definition in the UK if they only mention the month.

Also it's a best before so will be fine after March as well.

NoodleNuts · 04/02/2026 07:09

Surely that means the end of 03/26? A little bit longer than a couple of weeks!

VicFilm · 04/02/2026 07:09

That’s not great but to be honest I’d eat them when out of date, they won’t kill you.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 04/02/2026 07:10

I can’t see why they should reimburse you. They have sent you the product you ordered, a month best before is fine, the timescale you want to eat them over is not their responsibility.

They won’t become poisonous on 1/3 by the way.

sorrynotathome · 04/02/2026 07:10

Best before is NOT a limit, just a suggestion.

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 07:14

I know they won't kill me but I find it annoying to buy a product that is about to expire. And I am ott with to be consumed before- dh eats happily but unfortunately he hates protein bars..

Yabu to buy anything from Amazon.

Even if you feel bound by Best Before dates you've still got around eight weeks to eat them in (but they will still be safe past that date). YABU

FirstdatesFred · 04/02/2026 07:15

I'd be grumpy and write a bad review but I don't think they will reimburse.

99pwithaflake · 04/02/2026 07:16

They’ve got two months left so YABU. They’ll also be absolutely fine to eat after that.

It's not about to expire, you're misinterpreting the meaning of that date.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 04/02/2026 07:17

16 bars across 2 months is mildly annoying but fine.

Presumably they were a good price.

Smartiepants79 · 04/02/2026 07:19

There is nothing actually wrong with what they’ve sent you. Of course they won’t give you the money back. It’s not their fault you’re weird about best before dates. And if there is only 16 in the pack that means your only need to have 2 in a week and they’ll all be gone.

xyzandabc · 04/02/2026 07:21

Best before 03/26 is exactly that, they may be at their best until 31/3/26, (which is pretty much 2 months, not a few weeks) but nothing is going to happen to them at the stroke of midnight. They will be absolutely fine in April and likely May too.

If it was a use by date, that is different.

I volunteer at a food larder where we often get 'out of date' ambient items but where the manufacturer has put a 3 month/6 months/12 month extension on the best before date, the longest extension I've seen is 3 years!.
So they can't be sold in a supermarket as they can't sell stuff beyond the bbe dates but as long as we display a notice with the extension on it, they are fine to be consumed by members.

Bbe dates are put on packaging as very conservative, the vast majority of products will be absolutely fine well after this date.

parietal · 04/02/2026 07:23

When I order shopping on Ocado, it tells me what the Best Before date is for each item and promises it will last. If Amazon doesn’t make any claims about the date, you can’t assume. You could be buying 20 bars to hand out at a sports event tomorrow!

Ah, thank you for understanding why I'm not happy. Everyone thinks I'm being unreasonable- which I kind of get- tbh I would prefer to return them and get new ones but since this is not possible I would like to be reimbursed. I won't eat them- it's all in my head I know but I'm ott about this even though I know intellectually that it's fine to eat a yogurt 5 days after date limit I just can't do it psychologically- I'd rather go without.

But yeah, I will write a shitty review (factual) hoping to feel better afterwards😅

OP posts:
99pwithaflake · 04/02/2026 07:26

You won’t eat them even though they’re well in date?

That’s just silly.

But if there are 2 months left on them and as you say you won’t even eat them now and that’s all in your head then that’s not their problem.

2 months is more than enough time.

Brewtiful · 04/02/2026 07:28

I really don't understand why you're annoyed. They will be absolutely fine to eat for months after this arbitrary date. However, even by your own illogical viewpoint you have 2 months to eat 16 protein bars, that's ample time to consume them.

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 07:29

Yes, I agree. I wish I could be more like dh or ds2 who can drop a crisp on the foor and put it in his mouth. Atleast I have kept my weirdness hidden well so as to not contaminate my children. Although ds1(asd) has heavy OCD and gets easily disgusted so I might have passed it on genetically😥

nomas · 04/02/2026 07:32

YABU because too many people have used this as an excuse to get free items from Amazon.

Plus the best before date, as well as being reasonable, is advisory. They will still be good to eat for a couple of months after the best before date.

Plumbernightmare · 04/02/2026 07:33

If you can be bothered to navigate their circuitous help system, and can force yourself to deal with an online associate, they will refund you for food items. We had some badly packaged chocolate milk cartons which had split and negotiating the help system was a nightmare but once I actually got through to an online person it was refunded in seconds.

Sounds like OP tried that and they refused.

They won't refund the OP. There's nothing wrong with the items she's been sent.
