Amazon should reimburse me right?

Ordered protein bars (16). Came yesterday. Best before limit date 03.2026. Seriously? So in a couple of weeks. Tried to return but they wouldn't have it- since it's "food" you can't return- safety reasons I get this. But shouldn't they atleast reimburse me- I mean I bought these to have for atleast 4 months.

YANBU - Ofcourse you should be reimbursed!

YABU- Just hurry up and eat them all before March.

Protein or cereal bars usually have very long dates and can get hard and unchewable.

But it's perfectly legal to sell them as long as they're in date. If you need them to have a long usable date, you'd need to shop in person and check the dates yourself. An Amazon shelf picker (if it's a person) wouldn't have time to do so.

Thank you! I have never done this before as I have only returned items that were "returnable". They directed me to a chat where I had to send photos. And..
They will reimburse me and told me to do what I want with the bars I have. 😁

So even though MN deemed me as unreasonable (which I understand) I gained cause thanks to @Plumbernightmare who told me that it was possible. Thank you. And also it was very very quick. So I'm not going to badmouth Amazon even though it's ofcourse better for the planet and the local economy if we buy locally.

Its a best before date, they have to place a date on products and something like this will be fine to eat well after the "best before date"

Its off of amazon to have such lax stick control, or possibly its an unpopular product and hasn't sold much?

Good for you pursueing a refund, its what these threads are about imo getting advice amongst our judgements

19lottie82 · 04/02/2026 10:10

It’s a distance sale, so as far as I understand you can return them anyway?

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 04/02/2026 10:32

You font understand BBE dates. It's the end of March. So 7 weeks away.

You are the type of person who would be happy to ruin someone's business because of your own hang ups aren't you? My friend has a cabin on Air BnB and a guest split her wine outside because the table was on uneven ground. She got herself a full refund because my friend took a bottle of wine round while she was out and left it on the outside step. The guest said this infringed her privacy and left a 1 star review. My friend got banned from Air BnB and has lost thousands of pounds. All over a spilt glass of wine. You would just say 'I'm a princess about privacy' I expect.

Yes, for wednesdays when I do a long work out.

And you couldn't possibly eat 2 per week?

KSmith84 · 04/02/2026 11:10

16 bars or 16 boxes of bars? I think most people would eat a bar a day so its not unreasonable for them to sell 16 bars with a best before date which is at least 24 days away if its 1 March but more likely over 50 days if its the end of March.

LetsGoFly4Kite · 04/02/2026 11:20

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 07:14

I know they won't kill me but I find it annoying to buy a product that is about to expire. And I am ott with to be consumed before- dh eats happily but unfortunately he hates protein bars..

It's shelf stable, you could literally eat it a year later and it would be absolutely fine, as long as it was stored correctly.
Yabu.

PGmicstand · 04/02/2026 11:20

Sorry OP but you're being daft.

You have 16 bars, and 9 weeks to consume them. You could eat 2 a week every week after your workout.

I used to work with someone who was like this about food. If it said "best before" on it, even if it was vaccuum packed or had been in the freezer, it would be thrown out on that very day.
She wasted hundreds of pounds over the year, and ended up getting therapy for anxiety over her food issues.

Lizchapman · 04/02/2026 11:23

Do you have an option to contact the seller? If so drop them a message and ask if they can replace them with some with a longer date.

1HappyTraveller · 04/02/2026 11:23

They expire at the end of March.
That’s two months away.
Just eat them.

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 11:24

CasperGutman · 04/02/2026 09:48

I think the source of the confusion here is your earlier post where you said "I won't eat them". JayJayj thinks you're saying you won't each any of these bars, because they're best before the end of next month. That seems massively illogical, and raises the valid question of how far away the date would need to be before you'd eat it - and how you could ever be comfortable with eating fresh foods with short shelf life.

It's possible, of course, that you just meant you wouldn't eat it after the best before date, i.e., after the end of March. This would be more understandable, if a little precious - as you've acknowledged - when it's a best before not a use by date. This wasn't clear from your post though.

Edited

Oh, I meant I wasn't going to eat them after march but I see that it could be interpreted as I wouldn't eat them at all.

Quite a leap there...we're talking about Amazon and a very well known brand of protein bars.

OP posts:
MissRaspberry · 04/02/2026 11:29

They're still in date Amazon probably won't refund. It's 16 bars surely they'll be eaten before the best before date

They don't expire at the end of March. Best before isn't an expiry date.

GreenIsTheColourOfMyHoliday · 04/02/2026 11:33

"I don't like to waste food" and "I won't eat food after it's best before date even though it's still fine" don't go together

So everyone who's got a phobia is "daft"? How nice of you- you sound very empathetic. If you had read my posts you would have seen that I take great care in only buying what I can eat because I hate wasting food.

OP posts:
FasterMichelin · 04/02/2026 11:34

You have 9 weeks to eat them, surely that’s sufficient?

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/02/2026 11:36

I’d certainly be disappointed with this, in the same way that if I had bought a box of eggs and found the date on them was in 2 days time. You could try asking again. However, I don’t think Amazon is doing anything wrong.

Crunchymum · 04/02/2026 11:36

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 08:55

Yes, for wednesdays when I do a long work out.

Add in another work-out per week and then you'd get rid of them in 8 weeks!

Amazon cannot be held responsible for your weirdness around dates and the fact you only want ONE bar a week.

I wouldn't have refunded you! How much are we talking? @TheBlueKoala

UniquePinkSwan · 04/02/2026 11:38

Yabu to buy anything from Amazon.

There’s always one…

Gagagagadoesthegoose · 04/02/2026 11:40

Anyone who has phobia of dates should simply not shop online. Pick dates you want, don't screw businesses out of money when they send something with generally very reasonable dates

Well Amazon did. 32£. I rarely return things which is probably why they reimbursed me. I was asking for a return which was denied.

Welshmonster · 04/02/2026 11:43

Make your own protein bars. Have you seen the list of ingredients? Watch the Joe Wicks documentary on protein bars and you will never want to eat one again. You’re better off eating a Mars bar after a workout than a protein bar as they probably contain same amount of sugar. There are lots of articles to research this.

BillieWiper · 04/02/2026 11:46

I regularly buy and eat protein bars that are upto two years out of date. Like every day I eat them.

You will be absolutely fine. They are so synthetic they basically do not go off.
