Amazon should reimburse me right?

Ordered protein bars (16). Came yesterday. Best before limit date 03.2026. Seriously? So in a couple of weeks. Tried to return but they wouldn't have it- since it's "food" you can't return- safety reasons I get this. But shouldn't they atleast reimburse me- I mean I bought these to have for atleast 4 months.

YANBU - Ofcourse you should be reimbursed!

YABU- Just hurry up and eat them all before March.

I don't think they should have refunded you. Someone, somewhere bears the cost of frivolous complaints like yours.

Amazon usually refund a complaint the first time to keep the person happy. They are a billion dollar company with low costs

Jijithecat · 04/02/2026 08:09

OP, out of interest what is an acceptable best before end date to you?

Snoken · 04/02/2026 08:12

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 07:24

Ah, thank you for understanding why I'm not happy. Everyone thinks I'm being unreasonable- which I kind of get- tbh I would prefer to return them and get new ones but since this is not possible I would like to be reimbursed. I won't eat them- it's all in my head I know but I'm ott about this even though I know intellectually that it's fine to eat a yogurt 5 days after date limit I just can't do it psychologically- I'd rather go without.

But yeah, I will write a shitty review (factual) hoping to feel better afterwards😅

You won't eat them at all because it's two months until the best before date? Do you apply that logic to everything? Like milk, bread, eggs? If it's not 4 months left until they are not at their best you won't eat it? If so, you should probably stop ordering food items online and go to the store and check dates yourself.

JayJayj · 04/02/2026 08:14

I can’t believe you have scammed a refund because of your anxiety about eating food with an 8 week expiry date.

I am guessing you have either health anxiety or suffer with emetophobia. If so that’s a you problem and not anyone else.

Trouble is Amazon don’t then bear that cost themselves, they pass it on to the supplier, who may well be a small company that actually will struggle. Amazon don’t care, and they use their market clout to get away with it.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/02/2026 08:17

It's 8 weeks, you should buy from a shop if you want to check it's longer, you run the risks of shorter dates wherever you buy food from online

Imdunfer · 04/02/2026 08:21

Wouldn't most people bulk ordering protein bars be eating one a day for breakfast or at the least one after a gym visit 3 times a week?

DuchessofStaffordshire · 04/02/2026 08:21

The contents of most protein bars will be a lot more damaging to your health than an expired protein bar anyway.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/02/2026 08:21

DH sometimes finds the odd bar of this sort of thing left behind perhaps at least 6 months out of date and just checks it's not musty when he eats it, he has never had any ill effects

InLoveWithAI · 04/02/2026 08:22

It's people like you who make businesses put stricter rules around returning and refunding actual issues.

What they sent you was not a problem at all.

TallulahBetty · 04/02/2026 08:22

'Best before' is not the same as 'use by'. Even if it were, they won't kill you.

Imdunfer · 04/02/2026 08:23

If it's an issue you can always ask the vendor before you buy.

Bulk medicines like antacids are nearly always short date which is why they are cheap. (They still work, too.)

BertieBotts · 04/02/2026 08:24

They should refund really because it's a short life for such a product.

But I couldn't be bothered with the hassle and they won't go bad on midnight of 31/3. In fact they will likely be fine for at least 6 months or so after that date. The company would not risk putting a date on where the quality will be questionable, so there will be a fairly large margin. Best before end is a very rough metric.

Gagagagadoesthegoose · 04/02/2026 08:30

Bad review is shitty thing to do. They sold you perfectly in date food. They did absolutely nothing wrong.

Edit to add I cannot believe amazon is reimbursing legally sold perfectly fine food. Obviously not from their pocket

gototogo · 04/02/2026 08:31

That’s nearly 2 months yabu. You don’t know how long the typical date is. Shops use best before dates to rotate stock, they aren’t actually unsafe to eat afterwards

WhereIsMyLight · 04/02/2026 08:33

If you are really this sensitive to BB dates, online shopping for food isn’t for you. Shop in person and you can see the BB dates for yourself, or if you can’t get there, use an actual shop, call them and accept you’ll need to pay postage.

I think it’s shitty you fought for a refund, considered a low review (because there’s still two months to eat them. You’d be extra shitty if you keep shopping online for food.

Yes, this. It's aimed at people who will cane 11 boxes of them way before the end of March.

Quite. Watch those kidneys, people!

Iwantamarshmallowman · 04/02/2026 08:39

you are being unreasonable to not understand the difference between a best before date and a sell by date.

Explain how I have "scammed" anyone. I have been entirely thruthful and they obviously thought that my complaint was reasonable or they wouldn't have refunded me.

What kind of date is on this kind of thing in the shops?
Perfectly fine date to me

Plumbernightmare · 04/02/2026 08:40

@TheBlueKoala I'm glad you got it sorted.

If you click on Returns for Amazon, it automatically tells you you can't return food items (no matter what is wrong with it - damaged, mouldy, didn't turn up). You have to go through to their "talk to a person" option which is well-hidden in the process.

Re: short date, I don't buy protein bars, so I don't know what is standard - some food goes off quicker than others, so 2 months might be standard. But I bulk buy a lot of food that I expect to portion out over months - e.g. I might buy 30 cartons of chocolate milk for DD who needs nut-free protein each day after school for medical reasons - but so she doesn't get bored, I intersperse this with (e.g. 30 packets of biltong and 30 packets of Pepperami). I wouldn't be delighted with a short date if it's something I've bought at full price, as I'd need it to last 3 months.

Having said that, I'd be very happy to buy it at a discount and use it accordingly - I run a food bank so am not precious about eating things past their best before date!

viques · 04/02/2026 08:41

Seawolves · 04/02/2026 07:15

Even if you feel bound by Best Before dates you've still got around eight weeks to eat them in (but they will still be safe past that date). YABU

Yup. Eight weeks. 16 bars. So two a week, plenty of time to finish them before they turn green and venomous and claw their way out of your throat.

Womaninhouse17 · 04/02/2026 08:46

They'll be fine for ages. And it's not an 'eat by' date. If you're going to be fussy about the dates, you'll have to go to the shops and search through stuff on the shelves. Some things will never have a long shelf life.

Womaninhouse17 · 04/02/2026 08:50

TheBlueKoala · 04/02/2026 07:51

Thank you! I have never done this before as I have only returned items that were "returnable". They directed me to a chat where I had to send photos. And..
They will reimburse me and told me to do what I want with the bars I have. 😁

So even though MN deemed me as unreasonable (which I understand) I gained cause thanks to @Plumbernightmare who told me that it was possible. Thank you. And also it was very very quick. So I'm not going to badmouth Amazon even though it's ofcourse better for the planet and the local economy if we buy locally.

It would be better for the planet if you didn't order stuff off Amazon - and get them to send a second lot because you've been unreasonable about dates.
