I’m going to keep it short and sweet, I live close to another family member. Said family member had their sister over today, she visits often enough. Sometimes she pops over to say hi, I don’t mind this at all. I love a visitor. So she calls over and I’m offering her a cup of tea. She turns and says “Jesus do you actually live here or what? This place is way too tidy and clean!!” Just laughed and said “well you know me I love being organised etc” she said “no seriously though, like nothing is ever out of place it’s weird!”

AIBU to think this was rude!! I mean think it all you want but there’s no need to say it like that!!

It's not weird, you need a thicker skin if stuff like this bothers you.

It's not weird. I have people judging me because my house isn't like that and my answer is " excuse the mess, we live here" I feel like that when I visit people's houses where it's pristine. Makes me feel a bit inadequate.

I’d have taken her words as a compliment until she used “weird” which I think reflects badly on her.

I’d be thrilled with that, it’s my aim!

She must be just trying to make herself feel better about however she chooses to live at home, potentially it’s messy and she’s just convincing herself you being clean is the weird way 😂

Is your house a scarily sterile show home? I must admit I find it freaks me out a bit when I visit someone’s house and it feels like I’m in a Dignitas facility. I feel awkward putting down a cup.

I wouldn't have thought it was rude, either. Maybe it was a bit forthright of her but I'd still kinda feel proud.

I guess she shouldn't have gone as far as calling it 'weird'. That part goes too far. You don't call other people's houses 'weird'.

She should have just tried to make it funny, complimentary, maybe self deprecating. Like 'oh your house is so tidy it barely looks used. Whereas mine sometimes looks like a herd of wildebeest have trampled through in the night'. Then it would be clear it was light-hearted.

But then again maybe she was jealous and trying to be a bit mean.

I had a friend who overused the word ‘weird’. She used it as applicable to anything that wasn’t her. I did notice this and get tired of it. It wasn’t rude, just unimaginative, I think.

I totally agree with you. She suggested the way you keep your house is odd and unnatural, implying that for her it’s normal to be less clean and less tidy.
I just like an uncluttered situation for a quick clean as I don’t want to invest too much time on housework.

this is EXACTLY how I am…I don’t do or like clutter. Everything has its place and then life is so much easier and I have more time for other things. I mean when she knocked on the door I was laying on the couch watching homes under the hammer 😂😂😂

By sayingbits weird is implying that there is something odd or not normal about you OP. In Planet Real World it is rude, but not worth thinking on further. It deserves an 'umm, ok?' And nothing more. But it is rude.

Also, it is possible to see that things are rude without necessarily being offended by them.
