Friends asking for their money back

Hi, I am not even sure if this is the right place to post this, but I really need to vent.

My two closest friends and I planned to go to an event together. I live in London, one friend is in Hertfordshire and the other lives up north. We agreed to book it in Leeds, get a hotel, and make a proper girls weekend of it, especially as the friend up north is usually the one travelling south.

Both friends have now said they are too unwell to go. They asked me to put their tickets up for resale, which I have done, and have also asked me to pay them back for their share of the hotel even though I am still going.

The hotel is non refundable, and I used around £200 of my own points to book it. There was an extra £60 to pay, which I asked them to split between them at £30 each, which felt fair given the points I used.

They are now asking for that £30 back. I am still going because I have wanted to see this event for ages, but it means driving four hours to something I could have reached in ten minutes on the tube, and spending the weekend alone.

Am I being unreasonable in feeling this is unfair

A bad leg and a cold eh? Bollocks.

Definitely suffering from an itchy chin 😆

they paid for concert tickets, so the tickets belong to your friends. Send them the tickets and let them worry about what to do with those. Your 'friends' will otherwise for sure ask for a refund for the tickets as well, whether you manage to sell them or not.

Oh and this. Why is it your job to resell the tickets? Those are their tickets...they can go to the bother of selling them on.

berlinbaby2025 · 29/01/2026 19:48

Nicolasaa9 · 29/01/2026 19:39

Yeah I bought them and they gave me the money for the tickets and the hotel

No, they haven't given you the money for their shares of the hotel. Those points had monetary value.

pictoosh · 29/01/2026 19:48

Pricks.

I’m annoyed because I could have used those points towards my holiday with my kids or something

Why can’t you cancel? It’s a points booking so fully refundable with most hotel groups.

It’s not with a hotel group - it’s with a booking website

Or she could block them without parting with more money that they aren't entitled to!

Even better!

Rose213 · 29/01/2026 20:04

You shouldn't have to... but is it worth losing friends over?

I would be more than happy to lose 'friends' like the OP's 2 cheeky grifters friends!

But neither of the ‘friends’ seem to be worried about upsetting the OP?

It’s not with a hotel group - it’s with a booking website

Ah I’ve just seen. It should be refundable less cancellation fee. Unless OP booked a special category?

Bruisername · 29/01/2026 20:07

She said she called up and they said no

angelos02 · 29/01/2026 11:44

They should sort out the resale of the tickets and suck up the lost money on the hotel.

This! I'm not sure why they feel it's down to you to do that. Whilst they can't help being unwell it's not your fault either. You were kind enough to pass on the saving of using your points too, it's very mean of them to think you owe them. Tell them you've helped re the tickets but the hotel is non refundable unless fully cancelled so there is no refund to pay back to them.

kombuchabucha · 29/01/2026 20:14

Absolutely outrageous! My blood is boiling for you.

They are lucky you are sorting on a refund on the ticket for you, and that you offered to use your hotel points to make it cheaper for them in the first place!

The fact the hotel is non-refundable is key - just reiterate this to them. They're being so stingy asking you for £30 back each, when the whole thing is a massive inconvenience for you now.

ultracynic · 29/01/2026 20:15

I would probably not go but I’d be trying very hard to get those points back and sell my own ticket. What’s the event and was it expensive?

Tell them the £60 doesn’t even giver your travel costs to go all the way up north for no bloody reason.

Januarybluesss · 29/01/2026 21:01

Go and enjoy yourself! If it makes it easier to lie and say you didn’t go then do that. They sound like flaky cheeky fuckers. Hope you have enjoy the gig and hotel OP

WTF987 · 29/01/2026 21:21

"Dear Cheeky Fuckers,

Sorry you're feeling unwell and can't come. I've put your tickets on resell site but no takers yet. I'll send you whatever I manage to get for them if they sell.

I have called hotel and unfortunately it's non-refundable so there will be no refunds from that.

Hope you feel better and I'll let you know if I manage to get any money back for you from your tickets.

Love OP"

EmeraldShamrock000 · 29/01/2026 21:22

Not a chance. Enjoy your gig and big hotel room,
let them resell the tickets.

user1492757084 · 29/01/2026 21:23

Be succinct. Send them the same message.

No, sorry girts, the accommodation hotel will not refund. I can't get back my 200 worth of points either. That one we will all just have to wear.
Hope your tickets are resold. We'll cross our fingers and see what happens.
Tough luck that you're both sick. Less fun going on my own.
Hope you are both feeling better soon.

Cheers. Nicolasaa9

HeidiLite · 29/01/2026 21:24

Dear Cheeky Fuckers, I only booked the hotel and this specific event so we could go all together, but you are no longer able to meet up. As hotel was non-refundable, we need to share the full cost of 260 between us, please transfer the rest of your part.

NoFiller · 29/01/2026 21:42

Dear Friends

As you know, I spent £200 of my saved points on the hotel, on the understanding that you would be coming, and would never have booked it or travelled so far just to be on my own. Unfortunately it is non-refundable so I shall need you to reimburse me.

I’ll let you know if I manage to sell the tickets to cover my losses; otherwise, I shall have to ask you each to send me your £100 share of my shortfall. I am sure you understand.

xx

Nicolasaa9 · 29/01/2026 11:54

Yeah I have a feeling they can’t afford to go now well at least one of them who is quite bad with budgeting money. It’s because I’m going and will be using the hotel that they think I owe them for their money back. I wish I had others to go with but I don’t and I don’t want to waste the hotel because I used my points for it

Does this mean you've bought all the tickets yourself? In future get the cost of tickets upfront from friends before you buy them. Now if the tickets don't sell you'll be stuck with that cost too.

Hoping it's something in high demand so maybe you can even sell the tickets for a profit, which you should keep to help cover the cost of the hotel room you didn't need because you could have gone locally.

Bruisername · 29/01/2026 22:01

Op has said that she has the money for tickets and the hotel so she is not out of pocket

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 29/01/2026 22:04

They need to pay you back for the tickets if they don’t resell. It’s a shame you can’t bring someone else!
