Friends asking for their money back

Hi, I am not even sure if this is the right place to post this, but I really need to vent.

My two closest friends and I planned to go to an event together. I live in London, one friend is in Hertfordshire and the other lives up north. We agreed to book it in Leeds, get a hotel, and make a proper girls weekend of it, especially as the friend up north is usually the one travelling south.

Both friends have now said they are too unwell to go. They asked me to put their tickets up for resale, which I have done, and have also asked me to pay them back for their share of the hotel even though I am still going.

The hotel is non refundable, and I used around £200 of my own points to book it. There was an extra £60 to pay, which I asked them to split between them at £30 each, which felt fair given the points I used.

They are now asking for that £30 back. I am still going because I have wanted to see this event for ages, but it means driving four hours to something I could have reached in ten minutes on the tube, and spending the weekend alone.

Am I being unreasonable in feeling this is unfair

Cheeky fuckers. No way!

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 29/01/2026 11:43

Sorry! I pressed the wrong option without my glasses on. You’re definitely not being unreasonable in the slightest. They’re being ridiculous.

RandomMess · 29/01/2026 11:43

I would just say the hotel is non-refundable so if you cancel altogether then they will need to compensate you for their share of the full £260

Nicolasaa9 · 29/01/2026 11:44

I’m annoyed because I could have used those points towards my holiday with my kids or something

They should sort out the resale of the tickets and suck up the lost money on the hotel.

This is sound advice!
they sound awful! Don’t book with them in the future x

lazyarse123 · 29/01/2026 11:45

If it's nonrefundable anyway how are they expecting you to pay?
Even if it was they are being cf especially as you wouldn't have gone to Leeds but for them.

noidea69 · 29/01/2026 11:46

Are they unwell? Bet the real reason is that they cant be arsed.

Justgorgeous · 29/01/2026 11:46

Utter nerve of them.

Untailored · 29/01/2026 11:47

If the hotel room is non-refundable by the hotel then it’s not on you to refund them.

Rainbowsandlollipops1 · 29/01/2026 11:47

They’re being incredibly unreasonable, please don’t give them a penny back.

It’s unfortunate that they’re unwell but they can’t just ask for their money back. The hotel was non refundable.

I would also worry about this too… are they lying

Bruisername · 29/01/2026 11:48

agree you should tell them it’s non- refundable

if they fall out with you over it then they’re not really friends

INeedAnotherAlibi · 29/01/2026 11:49

I was too unwell to go to an event with friends. I still paid the hotel room because otherwise my friend would have been out of pocket. It’s a sunk cost.
Just tell them it’s non-refundable. End of.

NotReadyForChristmas2025 · 29/01/2026 11:49

Definitely taking the piss! Be reluctant to do that again. Don't refund anything.

Overthebow · 29/01/2026 11:51

Tell them it’s non refundable so you can’t refund them.

Nicolasaa9 · 29/01/2026 11:54

Yeah I have a feeling they can’t afford to go now well at least one of them who is quite bad with budgeting money. It’s because I’m going and will be using the hotel that they think I owe them for their money back. I wish I had others to go with but I don’t and I don’t want to waste the hotel because I used my points for it

I had this with one friend, paid her back but we don't speak anymore, she seemed to think I'm loaded and it wasn't a big deal.

Just say “get better soon, that’s a shame you can’t come now. The hotel is refundable and now I’m going to the event alone/ stay alone which isn’t ideal but understand these things happen. I can’t afford to pay you back as that means 1 person paying for a hotel for 3 people”

I'm sorry. What. This is most clear YANBU for a while! Print off this page of replies and show them!

My friend did this. 5 of us paid to stay for a hen do, she had to pull out last minuite and asked us all to give her a bit of money back for her share!!!

GasPanic · 29/01/2026 11:57

I would try selling your ticket as well and rebook for the closer one.

Even if it costs you £50 or so it will probably be less expensive than the petrol.

I would also not refund these people.

Why are they going to be ill, co-incidentally at the same time and when this event is on ? If they have a good excuse fair enough.

Otherwise I would suspect this is some sort of nasty plot to be unpleasant to you.

I would be ditching them as friends. As I friend I would be happy to give up my £30 in apologies for the inconvenience caused if I was in their situation.

Nicolasaa9 · 29/01/2026 11:58

Thank you all I just needed some reassurance I wasn’t being mean in saying no

OP posts:
SENmumof22026 · 29/01/2026 12:01

cheeky fuckers, just tell them no. Highly suspect they both can’t be arsed, whats the chances of them both being ill at the same time?
